NHP are pleased to announce that we are participating in the Victorian Government’s electric vehicle trial, an initiative that aligns perfectly with our aim to maintain more sustainable practices in the workplace.

The trial, which has now begun and will run until mid-2014, will help the Victorian Government to better understand the process, time lines and barriers for transitioning to electric vehicle technologies.

NHP’s involvement in this state-wide EV trial commenced in August and will be conducted over a 6 month period and has begun with the Mitsubishi iMiEV for three months followed by the Nissan Leaf.

With charging bays at NHP’s Richmond Head Office and National Manufacturing and Distribution Facility in Laverton, this will be a fantastic opportunity to highlight our ambition in this market and more than that, our growing capabilities.

“The Mitsubishi iMiEV has highlighted the fact that electric cars aren’t science fiction anymore and are perfectly feasible with new battery technology and improved electric motors”, offered NHP’s Development Engineer and trial participant, David Cheng.

“Electric vehicles aren’t just the domain of hobbyists and DIYers anymore. At NHP we’re really looking forward to working with the Victorian Government during this trial and embracing this new technology”.

More than 20 fleets have taken part in the trial to date, including AGL, Bosch, RACV, Melbourne Airport, Monash University, and local government.

Our customer-facing team seek to kick goals in a competitive match

With NHP having been involved in the industrial electrical industry for over 40 years, myself for over 30 of those, there is one thing that has remained constant throughout: change. A saying that is often heard around the traps is that if you aren’t moving forward, then you’re falling behind, and while this is somewhat of a throwaway line, there is some truth to it. The ever-changing landscape that we all face, now more than ever in these unsettled economic times, will see those who face the challenge excel and for those who can’t adapt will mean falling further behind.

A good analogy to illustrate change can be seen in any form of football or rugby. Think back 10 years ago to the best team in your chosen code. They would have been at the top of their game, sweeping the competition aside to take out the number one mantle. Fast forward 10 years to today, and compare the best team back then to today’s top team. Despite the best team 10 years ago being a great team of their era, it would be fair to say that they would be beaten by today’s top team for a number of reasons.

The main reason being: the game has changed, moved forward, and improved dramatically in those 10 years. There is more science behind recruitment than ever before, players are chosen not just on skill and endurance, but to fulfill a particular role within the team. Each player has to buy into a specific game plan that the coach wants to implement, with those who don’t quickly finding themselves on the outer and even moved on.

Today’s clubs spend an enormous amount of time studying their opposition and targeting areas of their game that they can exploit. The coaching panel who manages the team has grown, with each area of the ground segmented and coached by an individual solely responsible for making sure everyone is playing their role. Whiteboards are brought out at the breaks to show all sorts of statistics, from hard ball gets to slide tackles, metres made to tackles held, the little things that when combined go a long way to getting the right result.

So as you can see from the above analogy, many of the changes in a game of football or rugby in the last 10 years can easily be assimilated into a business environment. While in the past, a manager may have been responsible for a large team of people, these days management of personnel in a modern-day business has been broken down into key areas, with each area focused on a critical function. Of course, each of these areas must all be playing off the same ‘game plan’ or strategy to propel the business forward. Good businesses are also keeping their eye on their opposition, trying to keep a step ahead of those they know, but also in fighting against the unknown global competitor, often found online, who see geographical borders as a hindrance no longer. And finally, technology and the tools we now have available have revolutionised the way we do business today and can provide us with up-to-the-minute ‘statistics’ and information to help us keep track of the overall running of the business.

An example of this last point was recently seen at NHP when we undertook the substantial company project of replacing our entire enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution. This project was years in the planning and implementation, moving from our character and green screen based software (BPCS) to a graphical user interface solution - Microsoft Dynamics AX (MAX). It never ceases to amaze me the dedication of our team to get a job of this magnitude completed, with minimal impact to our staff and customers. This considerable change in doing business has now provided us with improved processes and increased data visibility that we could only dream of 10 years ago. We can now progress a quote to a sales order in just a few mouse clicks, where in the past we had a quoting system in which everything had to be re-keyed as an order. The release of the associated iMAX app will also allow real time access to the MAX system by our large customer-facing team of sales and technical staff, who can now retrieve customer information, price and availability and quoting remotely through their individual Apple iPad. This is a ground-breaking app which will provide an extra level of service to our customers.

Put simply, MAX has now provided us with the capabilities to move forward as a business into the next 5 years, where I am sure, things will keep changing.

Many of us at some point would have caught a glimpse of a satellite shooting across the night sky, but have you ever wondered how the signals get from the satellites back to earth? Well that’s where NHP and Australian company Environmental Systems & Services (ES&S) come in. ES&S is an advanced technology company specialising in the manufacture and integration of environmental monitoring solutions and have a number of satellite groundstations set up across the globe to receive remote sensing data from polar orbiting satellites. So when they recently commissioned an upgrade of the motor control technology for one of their satellite ground stations in Richmond, Melbourne, they chose to partner with NHP to allow simpler tracking and greater reliability.

With the images received from these satellites used for a wide range of industry applications including meteorology and weather forecasting, climate and global change studies, land based change detection studies, agriculture and forestry operations, wildlife research and more, the need for accurate and reliable data is understandably of utmost importance.

In saying this, the upgrade to the SATRAX 700 model ground station was not the result of any performance based issues or inaccurate data. Instead, it was the advancement in certain technologies that would help produce a more efficient system that brought on the upgrade, which looked to implement all of the functions required to automatically track, receive, demodulate and process this data in real time and with minimal user intervention. At its core, this advancement was in the field of Motor Control and Automation and, as specialists in these fields, NHP were able to work together with ES&S to engineer a solution that enabled this functionality.

“Aside from being able to supply the appropriate technology we required to complete the job, the ongoing technical support from NHP greatly assisted with our development work”, said Gary Quinn, Chief Engineer at ES&S.

“Our initial engagement of NHP was to address certain elements of the motor control on the SATRAX 700 upgrade and as we became aware of their full capabilities as a solutions provider they soon became a one-stop-shop for the entire motor drive chain on the project including motors, controllers, encoders, I/O and more”, Gary continued.

NHP and supply partner Rockwell Automation were able to provide a range of Allen-Bradley products for the project including a CompactLogix controller, Kinetix300 servo drive, MPL servo motors, Apex gearboxes and a Panelview touch screen terminal to interface to the Antenna controls.

With successful factory testing and a trial installation already completed and with the previous model currently in operation across a number of locations including Hong Kong, Malaysia, India and Pakistan, the benefits will be felt across the globe.

“Originally when ES&S engaged us on the upgrade, we were looking to offer an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix solution. Through further discussions with both Gary and Thomas Schulz (Development Engineer, ES&S) NHP gained a better understanding of their requirements for upgrading a range of Antennas, not just the SATRAX 700”, said Michael Liberatore (Automation – Business Development).

“With this in mind it was evident that the Allen-Bradley CompactLogix solution would deliver the required needs and allow flexibility for future upgrades. The new control system allows ES&S to use a less complicated tracking mechanism and takes advantage of new technology. The end result means that they can look to continually develop their range of Antenna solutions and create cheaper more reliable systems”.

NHP’s proud involvement highlights the value that quality automation and motor control products and solutions can bring to any application and that partnering with experts who understand your needs can achieve solutions beyond expectations – even those that take you to space!

Sustainability. Renewable Energy. Solar. Words that just a few years ago were nothing more than ideas but are today, firmly entrenched in the vocabulary and practice of all in our industry and society in general. But this has not just happened overnight. This increasing level of awareness has been the collective effort of many in our industry and with that, now comes a greater responsibility to maintain and develop this. A major part of that responsibility lies in education and with this in mind, Kangan Institute, NHP and Smarter Green have recently partnered in a milestone project that involved the design and installation of a state-of-the-art training facility…

Kangan Institute is a major industry training provider that has six campus locations across Victoria, Australia, each offering a wide range of courses in a variety of fields. Of these six locations, their Broadmeadows campus, approximately 20km from Melbourne CBD, has recently completed the development of a pioneering Solar Solutions Learning Centre which is sure to redefine training and education in this important industry sector. With a creative design based around the NHP solar product range, this development offers a complete educational resource for students, taking them through the entire solar energy conversion process including capturing, measurement and testing, and understanding the whole process in an innovative and engaging format.

As a recognised solar solutions provider, the services and expertise of NHP were called upon by the Kangan Institute to assist in the delivery of the project from the concept stage. NHP then engaged the experienced and innovative design and installation services of Smarter Green Pty Ltd to propose the system. With the use of quality NHP renewable energy products and the combined technical and engineering expertise of NHP and Smarter Green, the proposal exceeded Kangan’s expectations and was accordingly chosen for the project.

With a proven record in Renewable Energy solutions highlighted by our very own Sustainability Centre (located adjacent to our National Manufacturing and Distribution Centre in Laverton, Victoria), NHP coordinated and effectively supplied all of the solar and automation components for the project at Kangan Institute, partnering with ‘Smarter Green’ who produced the designs and completed the installation.

“Kangan knew of our involvement in solar thanks to an existing relationship with NHP and as it turned out we were perfectly suited for this project,” said Raymond Ward, NHP’s Sales Representative - Health & Education who worked closely on the project.

“After some discussion with Kangan Institute they expressed an interest in our solar products and services so we arranged to partner with Smarter Green to assist with creating a design that met the scope of the solar training Kangan Institute planned to offer”, Raymond continued. “Now, not only does Kangan see themselves as being able to deliver the training they had in mind, but it has opened up a whole new range of training courses that the college can effectively provide”.

The complete fit out included the installation of a custom manufactured manually adjustable 1kW, 2-axis solar tracker coupled with a stand-alone cabinet for testing, measuring and experimentation within the grounds, 4 x 1.5kW roof mounted solar arrays, ENA solar inverters, and a main PLC control board to control the entire system and create the various environments to appreciate the potential pitfalls associated with a Solar PV Installation. A PTZ camera was also fitted to view the system from the classroom as well as some shade controls which enable the students to create different yield environments. The final result is a state-of-the-art solar facility that promises to provide students at Kangan Institute a leading edge and one of the best learning environments available.

“The NHP products that have been installed are all top quality,” said Tony Devlin, Energy Consultant from Smarter Green. “The types of products that are required at an education facility like this need to be reliable and top class to work with and this is definitely the case here at this facility”.

“Not only did NHP provide the best quality products for the project, but they also provided the engineering support we needed to be able to bring this project together switching the solar arrays between auto/grid and workstations and what we can do here is needed for the Industry to mature and prosper. NHP approached us on this project and we have worked really closely with them to achieve the outcomes that are going to get Kangan the results that they need – it really is a great system for the Institute”, Tony continued.

NHP are committed to investing in the future of our industry and this recent venture with Kangan Institute and Smarter Green is no exception. NHP look forward further involvement on projects of this kind in the future as well as continuing to provide the commercial and industrial sectors of our industry with complete Energy Management solutions for their projects.

“NHP is looking to build partnerships with education providers like the Kangan Institute across Metropolitan and Regional Victoria and this project will hopefully be the first of many”, Raymond said.

In early 2010, the completion of our Sustainability Centre located at our National Manufacturing and Distribution facility in Laverton, Melbourne reflected a determined commitment to sustainable and renewable energy resources - a commitment that has now been rolled out across the rest of this 12,000m2 facility through an Automatic Light Control project.

The aim of the project was to reduce the energy consumption of the lighting in the eastern wing of the facility, which houses the distribution area and large shelving carrying thousands of products. The main consumer of energy in this particular wing of the facility was the high-bay light fittings of which there was just shy of 100. These fittings each house a 400W mercury vapour discharge lamp, which provides general lighting to the area, however, while they are critical during early-morning starts and late-night finishes, they are generally not required during the afternoon as the sun usually provides ample lighting through skylights.

After careful consideration, the team at NHP engineered a cost effective solution that involved a PLC-controlled automatic control system that measured the ambient light levels and turned the high bays on and off as required.

The final design brought together a suite of NHP products including an Allen-Bradley MicroLogixTM 1400 PLC, PowerMonitor TM 1000 EM3 logging energy meter and a six-inch PanelView Component colour touchscreen HMI.

These components communicated with each other via an Allen-Bradley 5-port Stratix Ethernet switch, with Wago TopJob® terminals utilised for wire termination and connection. Sprecher + Schuh CA8 miniature contactors took on the light-switching duties utilising 24VDC coils while Wöhner fuse-disconnects protected the voltage-sensing inputs of the energy meter. Finally, IME current transformers were used to measure the current being drawn by the light circuits.

This intricate PLC program controls the timing of the high bays being turned on and off, giving them ample time to warm up and cool down. It also collects data from the energy meter which is displayed on the touchscreen such as total energy consumed, current power demand, daily energy consumption and allows ambient light levels to be trended showing light levels throughout the day.

“Our initial performance review has shown that the automatic light control system has reduced energy consumption by a pleasing 20%. In the three months that this lighting system has been in operation, the daily average energy usage for the lighting in the facility has decreased from approximately 715kWh to 565kWh”, said David Cheng, NHP’s Development Engineer who has been involved in the implementation of this automatic lighting system.

“This reduction in energy consumption means the system will pay for itself in less than two years, and that’s not accounting for any increase in energy prices”, he continued.

Moving forward as the cost of energy increases as it is predicted to, now more than ever the familiar adage ‘every little bit counts’ carries even more weight, and as the cost of energy increases, so too will the monetary savings which ultimately heighten the value of a control system such as this.

Leading the NHP range of Rockwell Automation mid-range Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) is the CompactLogix™ series of controllers. This includes the 1768, 1769 and the newly released 5370 range of controllers.

Using the same RSLogix 5000 programming software that all Rockwell Automation Logix controllers use, duplication and scaling of existing programs to run on the CompactLogix platform is easy. Offering integrated serial, EtherNet/IP or ControlNet channels and modular DeviceNet communications, these controllers are ideal for small to mid-size control applications of all kinds and can be tailored to suit your various project requirements.

The 1768 CompactLogix and Compact GuardLogix controllers are no exception and come complete with support of as many as 30 I/O modules and up to 8 motion axes to form an ideal solution for small to mid-size applications that require safety, motion, and/or complex communications.

The 1769 CompactLogix 5370 Controllers also provide all the benefits of Integrated Architecture for lower-cost machines and when combined with Kinetix 350 servo drives, provide a strong motion solution for customers who require high performance in a compact and affordable package.

These controllers expand on the scalability of the Logix family and share common features across all three platforms including support for Integrated Motion on EtherNet/IP and Device Level Ring (DLR) for enhanced network resiliency.

Whether your application is automatic assembly machines, packaging, smart belts or labelling and more, the CompactLogix series of controllers is the logical choice.

In today’s switchrooms, safety and convenience are top priorities. Automation devices such as PLCs and HMIs can facilitate this by allowing operators to easily control and monitor electrical switchgear from a remote location, away from any potential hazards.

With this in mind, NHP has developed the TemVision Pro system for remote monitoring and control of Terasaki AR air circuit breakers (ACBs). The system comprises of a 6-inch touch screen and an associated PLC which can be connected with to up to six ACBs. These control devices can be installed in a separate location, away from the main switchgear.

The TemVision Pro system is able to remotely:

• perform open and close operations from outside the switchroom, completely isolating the operator from any potentially dangerous electrical operations. The interface uses feedback from the ACBs to determine the open or closed state.

• display and record trip events, allowing operators to immediately observe information about the fault and determine the best course of action. This information will also help ascertain whether or not it is safe to enter the switchroom.

• provide an interface that allows users to monitor phase currents and voltages and change ACB protection settings, all from the safety and convenience of a remote location.

• provide security through password protected settings, so that controls can only be accessed by trained individuals.

The TemVision Pro is now available for order.

NHP is excited to announce the release of AmpCom - a Networkable Motor Protection, Control and Energy Monitoring System - designed exclusively by NHP for the local market.

Highlighted by a compact and modular design suited for constant speed AC motor applications up to 2000A, AmpCom combines motor related parameters and metering (current, voltage and power) functions together with available I/O to monitor, control and protect processes from safe and convenient locations.

Whatever your industry or application, be it Mining, Mineral Processing, Energy/Utilities, Oil and Gas, Food and Beverage and more, AmpCom forms the ultimate choice if safety, productivity and plant optimisation is your goal!

Achieve Plant Optimisation and Prevent Costly Unwarranted Breakdown Situations

AmpCom provides all the advanced motor protection functions as well as comprehensive analysis of motor operating conditions.

Accomplish Sustainable Production and Maintain Higher Efficiency

AmpCom provides a complete breakdown of the energy monitoring related conditions to identify motors unnecessarily contributing to the utility bill and producing poor power quality.

High Level of Applicability and Expandability

AmpCom is easily integrated into process fieldbus systems such as Profibus-DP and Modbus Ethernet TCP/IP systems. The I/O expandable options make building motor and energy management systems easy and reduce wiring back to the PLC.

Installation Flexibility to meet any MCC requirement

AmpCom has the versatility to be mounted in many different configurations close together or separately.

In addition to implementing several ANSI protection functions that have been purposely implemented to protect your motor, motor loads and processes from damage against different conditions, AmpCom is also able to monitor several different variable types that are associated with plant process including Current, Voltage, Power and Temperature.

Forming a perfect complement to NHP’s extensive range of switchgear, the AmpCom range can also be combined with CUBIC MCC Multi-Draw solutions and other NHP switchgear such as Terasaki Circuit Breakers, Sprecher + Schuh Contactors and more, to achieve a complete MCC solution while maintaining safety.

Advance productivity, choose AmpCom!
