FROM THE EDITOR:

Ah, the best laid plans… My lofty goal was to get back on schedule with this issue, in plenty of time before the holiday madness hit. Alas, the universe had other ideas…

I was sitting on the couch working diligently on Line & Lure when suddenly water started pouring through the ceiling. It turns out I had a frozen pipe from the recent cold snap. Thankfully I was able to get all the important stuff — the laptop and other computer equipment, my dog records, all the dogs and their beds — out of the room before everything got too soaked, but by the time I got the water shut off, the upstairs bathroom, the heavily‐used family room on the main floor, and base‐ment laundry room were pretty much under water.

Now the real fun begins — the aftermath of insurance, repairs and getting all the stuff back where it belongs! The dogs are being pretty good sports about being dis‐placed from their favorite room and are tolerating all

the noise from the workers and equipment that have taken over their house.

Anyway, back to Line & Lure. Despite all the drama in my life, this issue is actually only a little later than antici‐pated; thankfully it was a lot shorter than the last one!

The next issue will be our annual issue, and will feature FREE ADS for all dogs in the 2009 top‐10s. If your dog didn’t make the top‐10 in conformation or racing, regular ads are always welcome. Please get your ads and other submissions to me by February 15. My goal is to have the issue out by the end of February, acts of God notwith‐standing!

All the best to everyone in the extended CWA family this holiday season and New Year. May you stay warm and DRY!

‐Beth Levine

RACING FOR FUN, ABBOTSFORD, BC, OCTOBER 3, 2009

After much debate, we decided to hold just a one day meet. We really didn’t want to cancel both days seeing as it was the last meet of the year, but with poor field conditions and low entries we just couldn’t see how we could make two days. So the day started sunny but cool with 20 adult starters. Even with the hard ground we couldn't have asked for better October weather. It may have been one of our smaller meets but with everyone pitching in it couldn't have gone any smoother. Once again we had an amazing turn out for the lunch. Lets just say the dessert table was the biggest one yet. The winner of today’s lunch was apricot and nut cookies with amaretto icing made by yours truly. With this being the last meet of the year we also handed out our new annual trophy to the winner of the most potlucks in the year; this very prized award went to Barb Barclay. Now that lunch was over we did get back up and finish off the meet. The meet winner was Lacy, with BOS won by Vijay, who picked up 4 more ARX points and is now only 3 points away from his title. Congrats also go to Lexy for running some really good races and picking up 2 ARX points. The match Judge was Beth Levine (Serendipity) her winner was Austin, 2nd Tanzy, 3rd Hugo, and 4th Cleo‐S.

We also handed out a new perpetual trophy to be awarded to the year's High Score Show Champion (average points per meet). Over the course of the year there were 16 CH dogs that ran at least one full meet and were eligible to win. The Covenstead trophy was awarded to “Cairo” Can Ch Swiftsure Senegal ARX, DPCX, TRP who ran an average of 15.35 for the year. I would like to thank everyone who came out with their dogs and gave a hand with making the meet go so well. Special thanks go to lure operator (Peter), box operator (Steve), line judges (Linda, Ellen Nancy, Emily, Janet, and Margaret) ‐ we couldn’t do it with you. Thanks you all for coming out, have a nice relaxing winter off, and hope to see you all next year. ‐submitted by Jennifer Szabo

PRETTY DARN QUICK WHIPPET CLUB, MILWAUKEE, WI, OCTOBER 10/11, 2009 Well, we had it all. Good old Wisconsin weather. We had clouds, sun, rain, and even that white stuff that shall remain nameless (can you say denial?). We had a wonderful crew of helpers. I would like to thank Janet Siehndel for making tags and for helping, along with Mary Beth Arthur, keep the race board in order. Thanks to Mary Beth for run‐ning the lure. All of the dog owners pitched in to line judge and keep the meet flowing nicely. I would like to thank Fred Luehrs for box oper‐ating and even giving me the opportunity to box operate for one program on Sunday. We told him that we only had to re‐run four races while he was gone, but we were just kidding. Thanks are due to Gina Luehrs who helped get the food table up and running. I would like to thank Dean Wegner for foul judging all weekend. We had a thirty dog meet both days. On Saturday, our ARX points went out to Naughty, Jamie and Pibb. On Sunday, Naughty finished her ARX title with the top set, and Jamie got within 1 point of her ARX title with the middle set. On both days, our top NARX points went to Charlotte, who ran undefeated all weekend, and the middle NARX went to Gem. Naughty scooped up the bottom NARX set both days. On Sunday, we couldn’t give out the bottom set of ARX points, but it was close. Pibb came within one race point of getting in there. It was an exciting finish though. To stay in the top 50% of finishers, Pibb needed to beat his half brother, Sly and others for at least second place in their last race. It was a tall order for Pibb, but he had managed it earlier in the day. It was close, but no cigar for this young dog. The cold weather abated here and there. I even remember seeing a dog or two sun bathing Sunday during our fun match. However, our fun match on Saturday, which was judged by Lisa Costello, was not so warm. She did her best to un‐crunch the cold whippets who were doing their best to ball up like doodle bugs in their efforts to stay warm on the table. The handlers did their best to keep the chilly whippets from bouncing around as they tried to keep warm. I think I heard some of the whippets’ teeth chatter, but it might have been the handlers. The top dogs on Saturday were, Char‐lotte, Moses, Hither and Sly.

Saturday match line‐up: judge Lisa Costello with #1 Charlotte, #2 Moses, #3 Hither, #4 Sly

Page 8: NEXT DEADLINE FEBRUARY 15thSend all news items, race results, ads and subscriptions to: Beth Levine, Editor PO Box 458 Sultan, WA 98294‐0458 Email – serendipitywhippets@gmail.com

Sunday was judged by Henriette Schmidt of Hillcrest English Springer Spaniels. She helped the handlers along with the sun, to keep warm by asking for the dogs to be moved plenty of times. There was not as much groaning as there would have been if it were 90 degrees. Henriette found Brazen, Moses, Sawyer, and Jamie.

On both days, we warmed up with chili. I would like to thank my mother too, for helping to get the chow in order. She also helped make the trophy table splendid! She made six crate pads, a really cool dog toy and even some stretchy num‐ber blankets to put out there. Speaking of great prizes, we had a new special prize to give out for superior driving effort. It was a can of de‐icer for windshields, and it was given out to Mary Beth. You can ask her about it. ;~) See ya’ll next year! ‐submitted by Jenn Smith

MID‐ATLANTIC WHIPPET RACING ASSOCIATION, PENNSVILLE, NJ, OCTOBER 18/19, 2009 After so many years of perfect racing weather for our fall events (including last year's cancelled weekend), our luck ran out at last with the weather gods, and we endured a truly miserable weekend of weather in order to hold our meets at Ft. Mott. Saturday was cold and pouring rain most of the day, and Sunday was just wet and cold, but it just drizzled off and on, making Sunday seem easy by comparison. Regardless, I do not believe any dog was injured due to weather con‐ditions, although some of the oldies were a bit stiff and sore to come back for Sunday, that would likely have happened in any event. Our equipment worked well and we had very tight racing, as the results will attest, with varied finishes among our B and C dogs throughout the weekend. We managed to scrape together 20 dogs for Saturday, and the meet was won by Paige. 2nd to Stretch. ARX points went to Faye‐Faye to finish, and Cruz‐getting his first ARX points in only his second meet!! Wow! I think Terri and Alena are hooked on racing now! For those of you who do not know this, their first race meet in attendence was the one where my Tabitha was paralyzed, so naturally, that wasn't the best day to decide if this was a sport for them and their dogs. The good day for Terri and Elena continued as their other Whippet, Joplin, won the match under Cynthia Schmidt, who took her assignment very seriously and moved us a lot to keep the dogs warm in the cold drizzle. 2nd to Stretch, 3rd to Jewel, 4th to Faye‐Faye. We decided not to attempt stacking since it was too cold to make the dogs look good, so we took a nice group shot of everyone smiling with the judge and placements.

Two birthdays were celebrated during lunch break‐‐mine and Mike Small's. Competing cakes both saw plenty of action at the dessert bar, following a delicious lunch of chili and ratatouie prepared by Leila. Special thanks to Leila for a lunch that was truly warming and festive!

Saturday match line‐up: judge Cynthia Schmidt with #1 Joplin, #2 Stretch, #3 Jewel, #4 Faye‐Faye

The Sunday meet was very small‐‐just 13 starters but no scratches. This is the first time in the history of MAWRA we have had fewer than 20 starters, so that is not good. But we made the best of it. This is something that will need to be addressed if this club is to continue, but we had a nice time and the racing itself was at quite a high level. We had barely enough people to hold the meet, but it went well enough. Everyone who attended certainly worked VERY hard to get it done. With windy conditions coming on, we ran things as fast we reasonably could. The battle for the bottom ARX point was pretty heated and came down to the final High Point. Although our entry was small, the level of competition was quite even. 3 NARX to Paige and 1 to Cruz. I understand that this puts Paige #7 all‐time. Congratulations to Carl! 3 ARX to Cruz and 1 ARX to Trick This was a good weekend for first points‐‐Cruz ran great and Trick had an awesome final high point to edge out Kohl. Sunday was all about the box break with so many evenly matched in speed dogs, and having a smooth trip without hav‐ing to deal with any traffic. Match was judged by Melissa Schnyder‐‐one of our most promising young Whippet handlers in our area‐‐and also a good line judge! It was chilly, but the rain had stopped earlier so most of the dogs were a little happier about being shown than on the day prior. Amazingly, out of the 13 finishers, we managed to get 10 in the ring‐‐a pretty good per‐centage of our entry. First to Voges, second to Stretch, 3rd to Joplin, and 4th to Kohl.

I apologize for the quality of the match photos. They are screencaps from my little video camera and I thought they would turn out better than that. It is clear we need to hold more practices next year and we will work on this, but I am pleased to report our equipment worked well. Again, I thank everyone who did show up and help, whether they ran dogs and especially if they did not! ‐submitted by Karen Lee

CAIRO Wow....what a year! Cairo finished his ARX title for CWA racing in early March followed by his show championship 3 weeks later. The combination of these 2 titles also earned him the coveted CWA DPCX title. He then finished the year tied for first place in the final lure course of the season which completed his field championship. Cairo has also started working toward his Tracking Dog title and is showing great commitment and ability in his new sport.

Cairo is kind, intelligent, funny, athletic and always willing to give his best. He is everything a whippet should be.

BeccaCH Highbridge On The Fly FCH, TRP, DPC

Since my involvement in the beginnings of the local CWA club, Racing For Fun, I have long wished for a whippet able to complete in CWA events. Becca has been that whippet and so much more as she is an eager participant in any venue that she’s been

exposed to, whether showing, coursing or racing.

She is my first show champion and this year became my first field champion and also earned her TRP, DPC, and has one ARX point!

We’re now starting in obedience, looking ahead to perhaps competing in rally, and I can’t wait to get her started in agility.

Becca has a lovely temperament, has been an absolute joy to live with, and her sparkling personality wins over everyone who has ever met her.

A search is on for a suitable “husband” for Becca with a breeding planned for late spring 2010.

CH Surreyhill's White Vienna, FCH, SC Kohl

We are very proud of our bench champion!! Sidelined with injuries, Kohl lost a great deal of running time in 2009. Despite that fact, he still managed to finish his ASFA title with

three firsts and two BOBs and to earn many points toward his DC in AKC. A few more to go, and he will capture that title!! We look forward to that next year. We also plan to race Kohl as often as we can in CWA, hoping to capture more ARX points in the process. This dog was born to run, so look for him on the track and in the field throughout 2010!!
