Page 14: ng3 May - June 2014

In the early part of the 19th century the working classes of Nottingham were in a poor way. One in 14 were on the benefits of the poor laws and dependent on charity to survive. They had no work or prospect of work. Work of any type was hard to come by and payment, if made, was low or in the form of bread.

The Napoleonic wars had taken their toll on the country and the national debt was high. A public meeting was held at the Exchange Rooms (on the site of the now council House) in Nottingham on 2nd May 1837. This was to take into consideration the condition of the labouring classes and raise funds for their relief.

A large number of people attended and £5000 was raised. This fund was to be used to set men with families to work .The work consisted of levelling and paving a number of roads. One such road was to be a new road from Coppice Lodge to Mapperley Plains. The construction of the road, called New Road, began almost immediately and was completed by the end of the year. It had toll gates at both ends to control the traffic and raise money for its upkeep. There was a Toll Keepers house at the Nottingham end which after the end of the toll system became the St Annes Police Station.

Near to each end of the road was a coppice. These were called Near and Far Coppice. They were all that remained of Nottingham Town Wood. New Road eventually changed its name to Coppice Road for obvious reasons. This road became very important for the brick works

that dotted the Mapperley plains. It was the main route to Nottingham for the bricks from these yards. The road was very steep however and arrangements were made that bricks which may be required in the winter were stored at the Nottingham end. For much of the winter it was impossible for loads of this type to be transported by horse and cart down the road except in very good weather.

One of the other dangers was that the rifle range of the Robin Hood Rifles ran alongside this road and at practice times

you could literally be taking your life in your hands to travel Coppice Road. The number of cartridge cases that littered this stretch of the road was evidence of this.

In 1937 Arnold Urban District Council decided to

rename Spout Lane in Arnold as building was taking place along its length and they felt that Coppice Road, the new name, was a better address than Spout Lane. This caused a problem for Nottingham City Council since there were now two Coppice Roads joining Mapperley Plains.

They decided that they would have to change their road name to stop confusion. Ransom Road was the name decided and so it is called today. Why Arnold UDC did not see this problem coming and choose an original road name is unknown. So Coppice Road was no more and another link with the area’s history gone and forgotten. It also causes confusion for historians and the like.

Ransom for New/Coppice Roadby Bob Massey

I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: [email protected] or post via NG5 magazine.

A Nottingham subscription library is opening up its private walled garden to the public on Saturday 24th May to support Alzheimer’s Society during Dementia Awareness Week.

The Bromley House Library Open Garden Event will take place on Saturday 24th May from 1pm- 4pm. Entrance is £2 per person. Cake and refreshments will be available as well as a raffle and dementia information stand.

The Library, which was founded in 1816 and is home to over 40,000 books, is situated in the centre of Nottingham in a Grade II* listed Georgian town house and is home to one of the few remaining city centre walled gardens.

Danielle Hindle, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society in the East Midlands said: “It’s fantastic that Bromley House Library is opening up the private garden to help raise vital awareness and funds to support Alzheimer’s Society. It’s a wonderful venue and will be a great afternoon out for the whole family. It is local organisations like them that enable us to support more people living with dementia and their families and carers. We greatly appreciate their support and generosity.”

With some months to go before its official opening in the autumn, there is already considerable disquiet and controversy over the Borough Council’s landscaping of the former colliery site.Phase One of the work to turn it into a country park has demanded some widening and firming of paths to improve safety and ease of access. However walkers are finding the whole site criss-crossed with 3-metre wide unsightly roadways instead of the grassy footpaths that were a much-loved feature of the area, with many of the new trees destroyed in the process. It is difficult to reconcile such intrusive and destructive changes to the land with the Council’s declared intention of keeping it as a cherished nature reserve.

Feelings are running high. Many local residents familiar with the site have agreed to serve on a ‘Friends of Gedling Country Park’ group, but even before the first meeting in April, several had already disassociated themselves from the group in protest at the insensitive nature of the changes. They believe that the Park deserves a much lighter touch that not only respects the wildlife that has populated the area since the pit’s closure, but more closely reflects the attitude of nature-lovers and walkers who want to feel part of that environment.

They want to see the wild deer, stoats, hares, foxes and bats, the birds (both common and rare immigrants) and the wealth of wild flowers that have blossomed there as nowhere else. But not from wide roadways that look like an inviting race-track to car-drivers and motor-cyclists, some of whom have already used it and put walkers in danger. This Park could have been preserved as an attractive Nottinghamshire asset, managed with a light touch to preserve its distinctive qualities and allow residents to enjoy it under carefully managed conditions. The Council’s decision to make this an ordinary country park, with wide lanes and a children’s playground, lacks vision. It is a lost opportunity to make it something far more worthy of Gedling’s and Nottinghamshire’s residents. If you want to contact Gedling Borough Council about this telephone 0115 901 3901 or email: [email protected]

Controversy at Gedling Country Park by Brian Cluff

Councillor Peter Barnes, portfolio holder for environment said: “The park has been designed to make it accessible to as many groups of different people as possible, we’re particularly keen to create disabled access to the park and access to those with mobility difficulties and the wider paths makes this possible.“There is still plenty of landscaping to be done which will affect how the pathways look, including tree planting and the installation of verges along the paths. We’re also conducting extensive surveys over the summer which will outline our wildlife conservation programme for the park.“This site is at a very early development stage and we welcome comments from local residents, over forty people have joined the Friends of group and whilst we appreciate that we cannot meet everyone’s expectations, we’re working very closely with residents and our colleagues at Nottinghamshire County Council to ensure that this park is a place all local residents can enjoy.”

Residents in Gedling will now be able to open savings accounts, get financial advice and apply for low interest affordable loans at Gedling Borough Council.

The council is working in partnership with the Nottingham Credit Union to set up a weekly drop-in surgery hosted at the council offices. Residents can call in or book an appointment to speak to one of the credit union financial advisors.

The surgeries will be held in the civic centre building every Tuesday 10am-4pm. In order to open a savings account or apply for a loan then residents will need to become members of the credit union. They will need to bring in identification and they can sign up for just £1. Residents will also be able to make payments, withdrawals and apply for membership of the union directly through the customer services department at the council on any working day.

Nottingham Credit Union is a cooperative that provides fair and affordable financial services to anyone who lives or works within Nottinghamshire. They provide affordable loans at competitive rates of interest to meet every day needs and even for larger purchases.

Peter Cowley, Director of Nottingham Credit Union said; “Nottingham Credit Union is very happy to be working with Gedling to promote our services to the local residents and to the staff employed by the council. Sadly more and more residents are turning to high street, pay day and doorstep lenders which charge high interest rates. This collaboration will help to turn the tide and publicise the services of the credit union.”

County shows are a celebration of British farming and the countryside. These events are packed with interest, for the whole family. Thousands of visitors, from those ‘just down the road’, to foreign tourists, perhaps holidaying in the UK, enjoy our county shows – very much so. With hundreds of trade stands, a county show is a fantastic day out. The Nottinghamshire County Show is held at Newark Showground, with show jumping, horse competitions, livestock, events for dogs, plus other animals and pets. The magnificent Grand Parade shows off the prize-winning animals from the dairy and beef cattle, plus the sheep classes. The dog agility is always great fun. The superb displays of flowers and plants will interest many, too. Some of the attractions and displays vary each year, so visiting the website will give all the information required and make planning a great day out, most worthwhile. This year’s event is Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, 2014. www.newarkshowground.com

The Lincolnshire County Show is held at the Lincolnshire Showground. This splendid event

provides a fun-filled, action-packed day out for all the family. Spread over two days, the show attracts many thousands of visitors, each time. This venue has a purpose-built events' centre, with interlinked exhibition halls, meeting rooms and suites, all having the very latest technology. This year's event is Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 June, 2014. www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk

The Derbyshire County Show is held at Elvaston Showground. A great number of events involve horses and all types of cattle, plus other animals. The Most Elegantly Turned Out Horse and Carriage, and the Ladies’ Hunter Side Saddle events are really wonderful sights to see. The vintage tractors, cars, engines and motorcycles, hold much interest. With dog shows attracting a lot of interest too, plus other animals and the feathered section, there really is something for everyone. This year’s event is Sunday 22 June, 2014. www.derbyshirecountyshow.org.uk

A charity in the East Midlands is celebrating its 47th Anniversary. They help people who are approaching retirement by providing seminars which cover finance, health, legal advice, safety, security, income tax, consumer rights, volunteering, pensions, benefits and how to occupy leisure time.

There are many important changes in legislation which will affect State Retirement Pension date/ages and full details will be explained on the seminars. This will be particularly pertinent in relation to the Flat Rate State Pension which will start in April 2016. The recent budget proposals will also be explained in full during the sessions.

During the course, each delegate receives a Resource Pack and a 1:1 with each speaker to discuss any personal queries. The Course Leader (always a retired person) is in attendance for the

whole of the time and can give first hand experience and help. The 3 Day Seminars are held each month and a charge is raised to cover the admin. costs. It is recommended that people attend within 3 years of retirement so that they can plan ahead.

The next Seminar is to be held on 23rd, 24th, 25th June and places must be booked in advance as lunch is included. All the dates for 2014 are on the website. Full details at www.ndprc.org.uk or ring the office for an Information Pack. Tel: 0115 922 3824. Bookings can be made on-line for Pre-Retirement or Mid-Life Seminars. For NHS Staff, special courses are held 3 times a year in March, July and October. A Nomination form will need to be completed to book a place on these courses.

Business Spotlight....

ALH LegalName of business: ALH Legal

Your Names: Amanda Harris - Your local will writer

How did you first get into your line of work? I did a Law Degree when I was younger and then worked in Human Resources for 15 years. When I was made redundant I returned to my legal roots and retrained as a Will Writer

How did you get to where you are now? I founded the business in 2011 with the aim of giving a friendly professional service in the comfort and privacy of clients’ own homes. I soon gained a reputation for good service and now many clients come to me through word of mouth. Clients are also referred from local financial advisors.

What are your plans for the next two years? I want to stick to what I am good at – a professional service that gives clients peace of mind.

How have you found advertising in ng magazines? I am pleased with the design of my advert and the team are good at listening and meeting my needs.

What did you want to be when you were growing up and would you still like to be that now? An actress! I did all of the drama exams. I have swapped the stage for clients’ sofas!

What three things would you like to do if you had the time and money? Running my business and caring for my 7 year old son leaves me very little time. If I had more time, I would like to:1. Get back into amateur dramatics.2. Finish the novel I keep starting3. Learn to play the piano – I started when I was young but didn’t like practising and gave up very quickly.

Preparing For Interview by Helen Jones

The UK economy is forecast to grow this year with most predictions running well above 2%. As the employment market becomes increasingly fluid the opportunity for interview becomes much more likely. There are many things that can be done to maximise the potential for success when connecting with a possible employer. In any situation preparation is key as the lack of it can seriously inhibit self-confidence.

Before any type of interview give yourself plenty of time to• Research the role and the organisation – think about how your experience and skills fit the job and company ethos• Anticipate the questions you may be asked – prepare answers• Find out how the interview will be conducted e.g. single, panel, groupMany employers will screen candidates by telephone initially. When preparing for this type of interview it’s important to consider: • Your tone of voice – be enthusiastic and use positive language• Battery life – charge your mobile fully before the interview• Location – find a quiet place where you will not be disturbedAt a face to face interview it’s imperative that you stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons by ensuring:• You arrive on time or better still, early• You are organised. Take along your application, CV and examples of work ( if appropriate)with you• You listen carefully to the questions and answer concisely• Your body language is confident and outgoing. It’s a proven fact that non-verbal communication is an important factor when considering applicants• You have practised the points that you want to get across. Build your confidence by hearing yourself speak before the actual meetingTime and time again we encounter candidates who have represented themselves poorly at interview because they did not get the basics right before attending. It is imperative that you• Plan the day of the interview, especially the journey. Take cash in case you need to take a taxi or bus unexpectedly, carry an A-Z map or put the destination postcode into Google maps on your mobile to prevent getting lost• Decide beforehand what to wear and set it out the night before – clean and pressed. Suits and business wear are the best option with clean, polished shoes• Get an early night – it makes sense! For further advice or help with your recruitment needs please contact me direct [email protected] “Our Talent is Finding Yours” © Helen Jones

The longer days and warmer weather makes us think about the summer holidays. But this year, as we look forward to a season of sport with the World Cup, don’t let crime kick off.

As the days heat up and the evenings stay light the trips to the pub tend to increase. A quick pint after work, a few drinks in the beer garden on a Sunday afternoon, a pub dinner with the family. And of course we have some late nights coming up with the football. But don’t score an own goal by losing control. Drink in moderation and walk away from confrontation. Your judgement can be skewed under the influence of alcohol. Don’t lose your cool. Remember, we don’t hand out red cards, we deal in jail terms when it comes to violence.

Also net a winner against thieves by making sure your house and vehicle doors and windows are secure at all times. It’s tempting to leave your windows open when you nip to the shop, or the back door unlocked as you lounge on the lawn. A thief can be in and out in minutes and the first you’ll know of the intrusion is your car missing from the drive or your laptop gone from the table.

Tackle thieves by making sure valuables are out of sight. Even something as innocuous as a coat or lunchbox on the back seat of your car could be enough for an opportunist. They don’t care if it puts them off-side.

Score a hat-trick against theft this season by doing the following: Lock up; Don’t leave valuables on display, including electrical cords; and Report suspicious or unusual activity around homes and vehicles to police on 101 or 999 if a crime is taking place. Call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Remember, if you’re taking a trip to an unfamiliar place this summer, revise your defence strategy and read up on the Park Mark approved car parks which are an estimated 50 times safer than parking on the street. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of those odds?

Follow this simple advice and blow the final whistle on criminals this summer.

Remember to catch us at road show events across the county over the next few months, where you can get the upper hand on security by picking up some crime prevention advice from our officers. Visit our website for more details.

Don’t forget you can follow us on Twitter @NottsPolice, as well as like us on Facebook. You can also receive news of crime trends and incidents in your area by signing up to Nottinghamshire Alert at:www.nott inghamshirealert.co.uk

Handling Friends

Next issue:

Handling Family

Holidays

They say that you can’t choose your family, but what about your second family? What about the family that you spend every ‘working’ day of the week with? This family can definitely be your own personal pick and for lots of us it takes many years to perfect; swapping and changing friendship groups in primary school and ending up with a new best friend every day. However in our teenage years we seem to have grown out of this and we all have friends that are there to stay- our second family.

I am lucky enough to have found a group that are as wacky as me. You can’t have friends that don’t understand your weird ways (and you of course have to trust them to not tell everyone else these weird ways!). I see some friendship groups that constantly argue over silly things and it’s impossible to keep up with who is friends with who or who took who’s side- it must be exhausting! If you can’t stick with your friends for longer than a week without some sort of dispute then maybe they aren’t your ‘best friends for life’ after all. With the stress of school and families that some teens have to live with, a solid friendship group is needed for that support and release when you just need a laugh!

In secondary schools, everyone always pictures the stereotypical friendship divide: the nerds, the jocks, the popular group. But is that realistic? Are we living in ‘Mean Girls’? Maybe to some extent but in the big picture, we are all just sleepy teenagers that turn up to school and complain together about being there. The biggest stereotypical problem is that you can barely walk down the corridor with a member of the opposite sex without being attacked with wolf whistles and questions about if you are a new couple. Sure, some people tease, but really, after five years in school, they should have realised that you are not a new couple and just friends!

Basically, friends can torment you sometimes but that’s what they’re there for! Imagine how boring life would be if everyone was serious the whole time; that doesn’t appeal to me! If you can’t have a laugh with and get support from your friends then what is the point?!

Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is looking for help to build a library of pictures covering 100 years of Brownies across the county.

This year marks the centenary of the formation of Brownies, which is the section of Girlguiding specifically for girls aged 7-10. Activities to mark the milestone are taking place all

over the UK and one of the projects here in Nottinghamshire is to compile a digital photo-album showing Brownies in action over the decades. The pictures will also be used to support news stories about the Brownies’ celebrations, and the best ones will be sent to ITV Central News for a feature later in the year.

‘We’re asking people to scour their attics and old photograph albums to find archive pictures of local Brownies and their leaders,’ says Aspley Guide Leader Kayleigh Hunt, who is managing the project for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. ‘The pictures should be scanned and sent to us by e-mail, accompanied by brief details as to who’s in the picture and when or where it was taken. The images will be added into our Big Brownie Photo-Album, creating a unique record of Brownies in Notts.’

K a y l e i g h stresses that she is not asking for treasured original photographs to be sent in. ‘We need digital files only, preferably jpgs,’ she says. ‘But anyone without access to a scanner is welcome to get in touch and I’ll do my best to help get their pictures added to our album!’

Images and queries should go to Kayleigh Hunt at [email protected]

KILLER FILLERSIn a previous life I used to own a sandwich bar and we always made all our sandwich fillings from scratch. Here are some of the best sellers. These would make great fillers for jacket spuds, cobs, wraps, salad bowls and of course sandwiches.

Coronation Chicken1 chickensmall onion - finely chopped1tsp garam masala1 tsp ground cumin1 tsp ground coriander1 tsp turmeric2 tbsp tomato puree5 tbsp red wine1 lemon - rind & juice2 tbsp apricot jam¾ pint mayo

Poach the chicken. Once cooked & cooled strip meat from bones. Gently fry the onion in some oil. When soft add all the spices and tom puree. Cook for 1 minute. Add the wine, lemon rind & juice. Cook for 5 mins. Add the jam and leave to cool. When cool - strain and then mix with the mayo and pour over the chicken.

Corned Beef Crunch200g tin corned beef½ red pepper - diced2” cucumber - diced1 stick celery - diced¼ red onion - diced2 tbsp mayonnaise1 tsp horseradish sauceblack pepper

Mash the corned beef up with a fork. Mix with all the vegetables. Mix the mayo & horseradish and stir into the mix. Season to taste. The crunch mix works well with tuna, cheese and cream cheese.

Mushroom Paté200g mushrooms - sliced1 small onion - chopped15g butter1 tbsp olive oil1 clove garlic - choppedsmall bunch parsley1 tbsp sherry200g cream cheesegrated nutmeg, salt & pepper, lemon juice

Melt butter & oil in pan. Cook onion & garlic gently til soft. Add mushrooms & cook for 5 mins. Add sherry & boil rapidly until all liquid gone. Cool the mixture then add to a food processor with the parsley, seasoning & cream cheese. Whizz to desired consistency. Place in serving dish & refridgerate for 2 hours.

A local animal charity is championing the rewards of adopting loving but overlooked cats.

One such cat, rescued thanks to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is six year old Archie (pictured). Found existing on Nottingham’s streets, Archie was in a bad state with a painful facial abscess - but following dedicated care is now fit and healthy. As with all the charity’s cats, Archie was FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) tested. As he tested positive, he and the charity are taking this opportunity to explain FIV – with the aim that he and others can enjoy new homes.

As an experienced volunteer explains: ‘FIV should definitely not be confused with FeLV (Feline Leukaemia); they’re two entirely different viruses. They’re mentioned together as vets test for both together, but whilst FeLV affects health and lifespan, FIV most certainly does not.’

FIV depletes white blood cells numbers, eventually making the cat less able

to fight off infection. As the charity, which rescues many FIV-positive cats, emphasises however: ‘FIV is extremely slow-acting. These cats can enjoy a completely normal lifespan with no arising health problems. The only need is that as it’s solely transmitted between cats, FIV-positive cats are kept indoors, and only homed with other such positive cats.’

Archie is a most friendly cat and is hoping someone will see beyond his FIV-status to the affectionate, healthy boy he is! He is neutered, micro-chipped, flea and worm treated and litter-trained.

To share your life with Archie, ring 0115-9984307 (only to be used for Archie enquiries), leaving a message with your postcode and contact details, or email [email protected]. For other enquiries email as above or call 0115-9321555 including offering cat fostering - which the charity urgently needs.

Whatton, twinned with Finland? The Cranmer Company of Singers, which rehearses in Whatton, is putting on a special concert with The Vanaja Chamber Choir from Finland. This exciting collaboration came about because while living locally and working as an au pair, Taru Perolta sang with the Cranmer Singers. Now Deborah Davies, their Musical Director, is welcoming Ismo Savimake and his choir all the way from Finland to the Vale of Belvoir.

The two choirs will be performing in a unique concert on Saturday 7 June 2014, starting at 7.30pm.The beautiful parish church of Bottesford will be filled with delightful sounds – a varied programme, mixing sacred and secular, with organ and piano, and likely to include the combined choirs singing firm favourite Zadok the Priest (Handel), and royal wedding choice I Was Glad (Parry). Ismo is planning to take the audience on a journey from Finland to Engand through Sweden, Norway and Estonia – rare treats, plus parts of the hauntingly lovely Stabat Mater by Karl Jenkins.

Ticket price: £8 adults, £5 children and those on income related benefits, to include a glass of wine/juice at the interval. It is wise to book in advance by phoning 01949 850364, though they may be available on the door.

Cranmer Company of Singers have engagements in Winchester, York and Spain this summer as well as

being booked to sing at a few local weddings

Nottingham based music charity, Music For Everyone, will be hosting inspiring singing workshops for primary school children on the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, with an exciting concert in Nottingham’s prestigious Albert Hall on Sunday 18 May. The singing course and concert called Vocals, due to take place at Nottingham Trent University & the Albert Hall, Nottingham, is open to all singers aged 5 – 12. Conductor Helen Hayes said “Our Vocals courses are really good fun and a great introduction to singing. We invite

any young people interested, to come along and give it a try! This time we will be singing great songs for all ages including songs from Matilda the Musical, Jack and the Beanstalk (a musical inspired by the ‘Revolting Rhymes’ written by Roald Dahl) and for very young singers The Three Billy Goats Gruff!”It is a great event for beginners because they have plenty of time to rehearse before Vocals with the music resources we post out before the event. It also gives our returners the opportunity to build on their past experience.

Music For Everyone invites young people to sing at the Albert Hall, Nottingham!

Will you be thriving or surviving this year?

Lacking Self Belief…?

Worn down with other problems or issues…? Sometimes problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking

self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive so easily.
