  • NGOANon-Governmental Organization: is a legally constituted organization created by private organizations or people with no participation or representation of any government.
  • In the cases of NGOs which are funded totally or partially by governments, the NGO maintains its non-governmental status in so far as it excludes government representatives from membership in the organization.
  • The number of internationally operating NGOs is estimated at40,000.Nationalnumbers are even higher: Russia has 277,000 NGOs. India is estimated to have between 1 million and 2 million NGOs .

What is a NGO? 3. SEWA 4. Self Employed Women's Association 5.

  • SEWA is a trade union registered in 1972.
  • It is an organisation of poor, self-employed women workers. These women are who earn a living through their own labour or small businesses. They do not obtain regular salaried employment with welfare benefits like workers in the organized sector.
  • They are the unprotected labour force of our country. Constituting 93% of the labour force, these are workers of the unorganized sector.
  • Of the female labour force in India, more than 94% are in the unorganized sector. However their work is not counted and hence remains invisible. In fact, women workers themselves remain uncounted, undercounted and invisible.

8. Question and AnswerSession 9. Q1.What is the purpose or goal of your NGO?

    • SEWAs main goal is to organize women workers for full employment and self reliance .
  • Its means employment whereby workers obtain work security, income security, food security and social security( at least health care , child care and shelter).

Q2.What do you mean by full employment? 10. Q3. What are the places the NGO covers ?

    • The places the NGO covers are 8 states of India.
  • Gujarat is where it started . The other states are Delhi , Uttar Pradesh , Bihar , Rajasthan , Kerala Madhya Pradesh , West Bengal
  • Q4. How far has the NGO been successful in its aims ?
  • Through their faith in organization for their rights ,to protect their livelihoods to safe guard their rightful place in the economy , self employed women have made their mark . They are now visible , more articulate , and self confident . three decades ago people even did not recognize them as a group neither their significant contribution to our country . Today there is a growing reorganization of this , of their immense leadership potential and their abilities and yet have a long way to go .

11. Q 5 . Why do the NGO only choose to help the self employed workers and not the environment?

  • we are also working for the environment if we do not protect the environment how will some people getjobs .
  • Q 6 . Do they form a homogeneous world ?
  • Yes they form a homogeneous world as the women are employed they help their husbands .

  • It is related with women empowerment .

  • Though my job is not related to this but I have gone to Mysore and Afghanistan.

  • Yes very much.
