NGSS in Practice Rethinking Science Teaching for K-6 Students A FREE Hands-On Workshop sponsored by the CSULB Science Education Dept. MORE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AT CSULB The Next Generation Science Standards bring a renewed emphasis on science literacy and science instruction for public schools in California. But what does an ‘NGSS-aligned’ lesson actually look like? What will the students be doing? What is the role of the teacher? And how is this different from how science is currently being taught? In this 3-hour hands-on workshop, K-6 teachers and informal science educators are invited to engage in hands-on science investigations to develop a clearer sense of what an NGSS standards-based activity might actually look like in practice. The workshop will also include discussion of similarities and differences with current instructional practices, as well as links to Common Core. [Participants are assumed to have an introductory knowledge of NGSS.] The workshop is FREE and open to both elementary and informal educators interested in learning more about NGSS. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP is required, to ensure adequate materials and parking for participants. Please contact Natalia Mora ([email protected]) to make your reservation no later than April 15 th . Parking information will be provided with RSVP confirmation. The CSULB Science Education Department offers several opportunities for local educators interested in advancing their understanding of teaching and learning. ELEMENTARY SCIENCE LEARNING ACADEMY (ESLA): This new multi-year program includes summer professional development, year-long professional growth opportunities (including workshops, lectures and conference attendance) as well as classroom materials and equipment to facilitate effective science teaching. The Elementary Science Learning Academy begins this summer with two weeks of workshops related to science content and pedagogy (June 27-July 8.) Applications will be available on-line at www.scienceteaching.org . Note that priority will be given to teams of teachers from the same school, but individuals are also encouraged to apply. MS IN SCIENCE EDUCATION ( Informal Education and Elementary Education Options ): The Masters in Science in Science Education provides practicing educators with the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of science, science teaching and learning, as well as link their new knowledge to their current practice.
