Guests will be seated in chairs separated from the graduates. No guests will be permitted in the graduate seating area at any time. It is recommended that your guests allow ample time for parking and securing seats at the Commencement site. The weather in May is quite chilly and damp in the morning and quite warm to hot from mid-morning on. Protection from the elements is extremely limited on both Commencement sites. Because of these conditions, you are strongly urged to consider the health and comfort of your guests. Infants, the elderly and others who may be adversely affected by extreme temperatures may find attending the Commencement Exercises to be stressful. Your guests are urged to wear sunscreen or brimmed hats. For your comfort telecast rooms are available for viewing Oviatt Lawn ceremonies at the following locations: Sequoia Hall - Nobbs Auditorium , Citrus Hall - Planetarium. Please note that chairs are not to be moved from their original location due to fire marshal regulations.

IMPORTANT: To be considerate to other guests and graduates we ask that you do not bring noise makers, utilize umbrellas, or stand in the aisles during the commencement ceremony. Due to the danger of errant balloons hitting power lines, mylar balloons will not be allowed.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR GRADUATES AND GUESTS WITH DISABILITIES Graduates and guests with disabilities should be aware that the processional routes and Com-mencement sites are accessible. Special seating for graduates and guests with disabilities will be available. Because of limited seating capacity, the graduate or guest with a disability may be accompanied by two party members. Every effort will be made to seat other party members in the closest adjacent seating area possible.

For graduates with disabilities electing to march and be seated with their Colleges, ushers will be made available to assist them during the processional and recessional.

Graduating students with special needs during the graduation ceremony should contact the Commencement Coordinator at the office of SD & IP, and for additional information please call the Center on Disabilities at (818) 677-2684.

DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING GRADUATES AND GUESTSInterpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing graduates and guests will be available in a reserved area at each site. Graduates will line up at the assembly area. Look for the designated area marked, “Deaf and Hard of Hearing”. A processional marshal will lead graduates to the correct seating location. If you have special needs, please notify the National Center on Deafness at (818) 677-2614 (V/TTY).

DIPLOMASDiplomas are not issued at the Commencement Exercises. Graduates will receive their diplomas approximately three to six weeks following Commencement from Admissions and Records. A diploma cover will be given to each graduate on the day of the ceremony.

TASSEL CHANGEIn academic tradition, the student who has not yet earned a degree wears the tassel on the RIGHT side of the mortarboard. After President Koester has conferred the baccalaureate degrees, graduates will be directed to move the tassel to the LEFT.

Master’s candidates wear their tassel on the left to begin with and, therefore, do not move it during the ceremony.

LOST AND FOUNDThe Department of Public Safety maintains a centralized lost and found service for the Cal State Northridge community. In the event you lose an item during Commencement, a University police officer or community service assistant can direct you to Public Safety headquarters to file a lost report or check on lost property turned in to the Public Safety Department.

THE ACADEMIC DRESSThe traditional attire worn at Commencement Exercises had its beginnings in the Middle Ages when the university first developed as an institution of higher learning.

The most important centers of intellectual life in the 10th century were the monasteries, the segment of society least affected by the disorders of the time. The relative stability of the monastic life left monks free to develop systematic graded education for the first time in Western society. The first students were the monks and priests themselves, and the costumes they wore were more for protection from the elements than as a distinctive regalia for the scholarly way of life. Caps were a necessity in the cold drafty buildings, and capes and hoods were worn for warmth. In later centuries, as the British universities passed from the control of the ecclesiastics, the costumes took on brighter colors, and the hood, a stole-like garment, was singled out as the item to be made distinctive for various degrees by color, trimming and lining.

The use of caps, gowns, and hoods has been continuous in the United States since Colonial times - the tradition having been transplanted from Oxford and Cambridge to the New World. However, the dress code was modified and vivid colors so prevalent in Great Britain were eliminated. Prior to 1895, faculty academic costumes varied widely from university to university. Since few people knew the distinguishing marks or colors for the various degrees, the dress code was standardized for all American universities. Students began a movement which would spread throughout the country to make academic regalia an integral part of the Commencement ceremony. A desire to make the festivities more impressive, as well as to add grace and dignity to the function, led to the success of this endeavor.

At California State University, Northridge, the baccalaureate candidates wear a wide-sleeved gown and the master’s candidates wear a gown with slit sleeves.

Both groups wear caps with colored tassels. The lining of the master’s hood matches the tassel color, which identifies the College in which the degree has been taken.

Hail to the MatadorsBy Richard Kaufman

Hail to the Matadors

And to our school so dear.

As we move along the road of life,

let us keep from doubt or fear,

For the knowledge which we find here,

for all who urge us on.

The spirit of the red and white

Will brighten every dawn.

Where the sun is shining

And where truth leaves an open door,

to honor Strong and Courage Tall

We hail our Matador!
