1.0 INTRODUCTION
During July and August, 1986, the Magpie River project area was mapped at a scale of 1:5000 using the claim lines and an airphoto mosaic for control.
A grid was subsequently established north of Legarde Lake over an auriferous zone hosted in felsic volcanics. Samples from trenching returned anomalous gold values including a 3m section of 1.32 g/t and a 1m section of 4.46 g/t.
2.0 LOCATION AND ACCESS (Figure 1)

portions of Chabanel, straddles the Trans-
Access to the central and eastern portion of the claims is best achieved along the Algoma Central Railway (ACR) or by vehicle along the Steephill Falls road which follows the Magpie River to Siderite Junction.
3.0 PROPERTY DESCRIPTION (Figure 2)
The Magpie River Project consists of one hundred and eight (108) unpatented mining claims in two blocks and one single claim near Mink Lake. The property comprises approximately 1750 hectares in southeastern Chabanel, northwestern Bailloquet and north-central Lendrum Townships (Claim Maps G.2744, G.2394 and G.2785) in the Sault Ste. Marie Mining Division. The claims are recorded in the name of Noranda Exploration Company, Limited and numbered as follows:

4. l Magpie River Area
Gold was first discovered in the Magpie River area during the late 1920's and early 1930's by local prospectors. One of the prospects, the Mun-Williamson near Mink Lake, was eventually drill tested by J. Errington in 1936. Ten shallow holes were drilled. Partial assay results on file include an 8.5m intersection of 3.12 g/t.
In 1981, Algoma Ore staked several claims bordering on the northeast corner of the Gros Cap Indian Reservation to cover several airborne EM anomalies. Geological mapping and ground geophysical surveys (VLF-EM and Magnetometer) outlined two subparallel bands of sulphide-bearing iron formation capping a cycle of mafic-felsic volcanism. Three diamond drill holes (338m) tested the two bands of iron formation. Examination of the core showed that the upper band is associated with silicified tuffs and quartz-eye muscovite schist (locally with green mica). Sections of the core were assayed for gold and base metals with negative results.
The Mildred Iron Range which outcrops on a large hill east of the Trans-Canada Highway, was staked by A. Guetz in 1906. Jalore Mining optioned the property in 1948 and carried out diamond drilling, magnetic and gravity surveys. The option was abandoned in 1951 because the iron formation contained a low (00/5) percentage of iron. No assays or reports regarding the property's gold or base metal potential could be located in the assessment files or on record with Algoma Ore, the present land holders.
Hemgold Resources (now known as Hydro Home Appliance) staked much of the ground which is now part of the Magpie River Project in 1983. An airborne survey, contracted to Aerodat, was flown. No ground follow-up was done.
4.2 Lagarde Lake Area
A gold prospect at Lagarde Lake was examined during the 1930's by a series of trenches over a strike length of 270ra. The Lagarde Lake showing, known previously as the Boliden Syndicate and the Mun-Williamson Prospect, was examined by Erie Canada and Hollinger in 1936. Chip samples taken by Erie Canada along the trenches generally returned low values, although a 2.6m section reportedly assayed 2.4 g/t Au.
4.3 Mink Lake Area
Hemgold Resources staked the Mink Lake prospect in 1983. A geophysical program (VLF-EM and Magnetometer) was completed by H. Ferderber Geophysics Ltd.
5.0 REGIONAL GEOLOGY
The Magpie River Project lies within the Archean Wawa Greenstone Belt, part of the Abitibi-Wawa-Shebandowan subprovince of the Canadian Shield. The property lies along the south limb of a major ENE-trending sedimentary basin which can be traced from Michipicoten on the shore of Lake Superior to Hawk Junction.
The area is underlain by a metavolcanic assemblage occurring stratigraphically above the Helen, Eleanor, Lucy and Mildred Iron Ranges. The sequence consists of high Fe-tholeiitic basalts, calc- alkaline intermediate-felsic volcanics locally capped by a hematite- oagnetite iron formation. The volcanic sequence is overlain and locally eroded by a turbidite sedimentary sequence consisting of argillites, wackes and conglomerates. Local fluviatile sedimentation is preserved.
Supracrustal rocks in the area have been metamorphosed to the upper greenschist facies. The volcanic rocks have been intruded by several major early Precambrian gabbroic bodies and the entire sequence has been intruded by mid to late Precambrian diabase dykes and Proterozoic alkaline lamprophyres.
6.0 WORK PERFORMED - 1986
6.1 Claim Line Geology (Maps l and 2)
The Magpie River claim group was mapped on a scale of 1:5,000 along the existing claim lines using an airphoto mosaic for control. Exposure in the eastern portion of the claims is excellent due to the absence of vegetation and soil cover. A detailed legend for the Wawa area is presented as Appendix I. Assays and whole rock geochemistry for the area is provided as Appendix II.
The project area is underlain predominantly by intermediate- felsic pyroclastics and possible synvolcanic intrusive equivalents which have been intruded by a diorite complex.
Timiskaming metasediments, including conglomerate, wacke and argillite underlie the northern portion of the claim group. Iron formation occurs within the volcanic sequence but is more commonly associated with the volcanic-sedimentary contact.
6.2 Grid Establishment
A small grid totaling 4.6 kms was established north of Lagarde Lake on claims SSM 884990, 884991 and 884993 to cover a stratiform auriferous zone hosted in felsic volcanics.
The baseline was run at an azimuth of H48E with grid lines every 50m.
6.3 Detailed Geology - Cardiac Hill (Map 3)
Detailed mapping on a scale of 1:1,000 and trenching was carried out on the Cardiac Hill grid. The dominant rock types in the grid area are intermediate-felsic volcanics; including, spherulitic flows, coarse agglomerates and finely laminated tuffs. Massive quartz- eye bearing units occur as conformable "sill-like" lenses within the volcanic sequence.
A thin brecciated band of chert-magnetite iron formation which can be traced between lines 3+OOE and 4+OOE, appears to be on strike of a 5-10m wide gossan zone that outcrops on lines 4+50E and 5+OOE. The gossan zone is hosted by a sheared, carbonate-rich unit containing abundant green mica.
Mafic volcanics outcrop on the northern section of the gridarea. Pillowed flows, pillow breccia and medium to coarse-grainedmassive flows or intrusives characterize the mafic volcanic sequence.
The mafic volcanics are overlain by conglomerates, wackes and argillites.
Gold mineralization is related to gossanous zones along the contact between the coarse agglomerate and spherulitic flows. Eight trenches were placed along the spherulitic-agglomerate contact, and another two trenches sampled the iron formation.
Assay results included a section of 1.32 g/t over 3m in Trench l and 1m of 4.56 g/t in Trench 4.
7.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
1) A grid should be established over the western portion of the claim group along the volcanic-sedimentary contact. Ground HLEM and proton magnetometer surveys are recommended to delineate the sulphide-bearing iron formation.
2) Detailed geological mapping and soil geochemistry should be carried out over the grid.
3) Additional mapping and prospecting is warranted near Lagarde Lake in the vicinity of the Cardiac Hill showing.
