PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I am pleased to start my tenure as your President. It is with a bit of appre-hension that I begin my three-year term. For the past three years I served as Vice-President under the capable leadership of Jim Hahn. I think that with the support of Jim and the great team of people on the Nord-Bridge Board, all should go well. At the March 4th Annual General Meeting three new Board members and one returning Board member were elected. We welcome back Marilyn Gillies, and are pleased to introduce new Board members George Berg, Jack Fox and Debra Dunsmore. These new Board members join the present Board including Delores Bourk, Norene Easthope, Clay Olsen, Doug Youngren and Donna Takeda. The new Ex-ecutive includes Past-President, Jim Hahn, new Vice-President, Rodger Halvorsen, Treasurer, Roberta Svennes and Secretary, Marilynn Heaton as well as myself as your Presi-dent. I think this will be a great Board to represent your Centre.

We often talk about how important volunteers are to Nord-Bridge. The members of your Board are great volun-teers, giving of their time to do the business required in run-ning this Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre. We are all proud of our facility and grateful to everyone who volunteers to make it so special. When you see someone giving of their time at our Center, please say a big thanks to them. We could not sur-vive without their commitment.

A musical event coming up this month is the “Popovich Show” on Wednesday April 15th at 1:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Hall. This is a great group and for us a great fundraiser with the cost being only $10.00. We extend thanks to our fine sponsors Southern Alberta Hearing Aid and Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home & Cre-mation Services. We are also looking forward to the Miner’s Memorial Banquet on May 1st. The Miner’s Raffle tickets will be drawn at this event. Those tickets are now available at the Nord-Bridge office.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve you and I look forward to talking to you again next month.

APRIL SAFETY TIPS

In your home, apartment, condo or suite - thieves can gain entry; always lock your doors. Use a peephole, win-dow or screen door to identify visitors. Talk to them through a locked door. Only “buzz in” people you know or are expecting; maintenance workers should contact the building manager. On your telephone...don’t recognize a number? Don’t answer it! Be wary of limited time offers, pushy sales people and requests for personal infor-mation. If you are uncomfortable, hang up or close your door. When receiving a phone call that asks you to push numbers for more infor-mation, or to win a prize, don’t proceed. Hang up! This is a scam...it will end up costing you money. From “Lethbridge Seniors Safety Calendar 2015” brought to you by Lethbridge Elder Abuse Response Network (L.E.A.R.N.)

The Radio Flyer By Jack Simmons, Mind Joggers Group

When I was a young man of six years or seven, And looked up to boys who were over eleven,

I was dreaming through the catalog of Mr. Macleod, When a write up and picture put me way up on a cloud.

There letter B on the top left of page twenty-seven,

Was the reason I could feel I was up in Heaven, Shinning red paint on its metal box sides,

Fat black rubber tires on which it would glide.

I tore out that page and folded it neat, Finished my task and put down the seat,

Slammed shut the door to keep out the hens, Chickens even in January should be in pens.

I plowed through the snow and around the gate,

Across the big ice patch trying to skate, I roared into the porch and ran out of my boots. Showed mum the picture and gave a good hoots.

If mum showed dad I hoped they’d be on the hook,

Boy was I thankful Mr. Macleod made that book, My birthday was in March six whole weeks away.

I must start right now their loving hearts to sway.

I hauled loads of fire wood to mum in the kitchen, And chop to the barn for cows, pigs and chickens,

All this I did with my little two-kid toboggan, This was to show a wagon would be a good bargain.

The sixth day of March was my birthday you see,

And on that day I received the gift with great glee, Now when I see Radio Flyer wagon so bold,

It brings back old memories that are like real gold.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT Greetings Members,

During the past month I have certainly been reminded on numerous occasions of all the support individual members receive from the friends and acquaintances made or sustained here at Nord-Bridge. An example is an email my wife received last evening from a Conven-er of one of our social and fundraising clubs. This indi-vidual, with thoughtful kindness, welcomed Janay into an activity that will certainly be good for her health. Valerie in her Newsletter article spoke of the same topic, and how members and friends from Nord-Bridge have supported her as she recovered from major surgery. Today I am also mindful of David and Sherri Ng and children, who have just lost a loved one. Unfortunately, Sherri’s father recently passed away, and we extend our condolences. I know David has appreciated all who have spoken with him about this passing; and those who have stepped up to fill a portion of the many daily duties he performs. We have several members in hospital right now, and again I have seen how other members have networked with friends at Nord-Bridge to provide the many kinds of supports needed for each unique circumstance. Our condolences and get well wishes go out the members specifically mentioned in this Newsletter (please see that report). One individual listed, our appropriately designated “Visiting Angle” Lydia Prokop, for years has been making daily visits to hospital, homes, and assisted living facilities to extend get well wishes. As I visited the In-tensive Care department earlier this week, I learned she is still busy and inspiring the nursing staff in her unit. I just wish our Governments, both Federal, Provincial, and Municipal, would recognize the important role Alberta’s senior centres such as Nord-Bridge play in the health and well-ness of our citizenry. In the upcoming Provincial and Federal elections, please make sure all candidates, specifically your candidate, understands this message. Our newly elected President, Pat Santa, wrote a great article this month telling you about our March AGM, and the results of our Board election. I too congratulate all of those who have been elected to work with your Cen-tre’s administration, in planning and guiding our specific activities, pro-grams, and policies. We have a strong Executive leadership in place, that together with selfless Board members, can help us build upon our history, and make new successes. As a final note, I wish all members a pleasant and meaningful Easter season. I remind members that your Centre will be closed on Good Fri-day through Easter Monday. May you enjoy the good company of friends and family during this early spring break.

Respectfully yours, Randy Smith

Councillor

From the Desk of Val Hello members! First of all I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone for all the cards, food, and visits I received while I was hospitalized and at home relaxing and resting in my easy chair. I am so grateful to the many wonderful friends that I have made since working for Nord-Bridge. It has been a total of 24 happy years. My time off has gone fast but the rest and relaxation has been good for me. I now know what it is like when one is in retirement. I had time to catch up on business and at the same time, just relax and indulge in hob-bies like knitting, reading, watching T.V. especially the curling games of which I am an avid fan. I have missed seeing all of your friendly faces but I will be back on the job very soon. Thanks to my assistant, Heather and to my superb volunteers for doing a fabulous job in my absence. With spring upon us, it is time to plan travel outings and we want YOU to be part of our travel program. Please read in detail the Travel News on Page 15 of this Newsletter. We want YOU to be able to enjoy your-selves by getting out and about. We will no longer book Stage West or Rose Bud trips as both of these venues require 38 committed passen-gers. We have had to cancel the last two Rose Bud trips due to LACK OF INTEREST. We have a deposit on hold at Rose Bud that we would like to use so read the details for upcoming shows in Rose Bud. IS THERE INTEREST FOR THE UPCOMING PRO-DUCTION OF THE WIZARD OF OZ? If we can’t book a trip to Rose Bud soon, we will lose our deposit. There has been a disappointing lack of interest in trips this winter. Please stop by and talk to Heather or myself and let us know where or what kinds of trips you would be interested in taking. We look forward to your suggestions.

Our office is more than happy to assist you in navigating your way through Federal Government services. We regularly help constituents: Contact Federal departments and agencies; Obtain Canadian pins and flags; Request a meeting; Make claim inquires about Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, or Citizenship and Immigration; Order congratulatory certificates for birthdays or anni-

versaries; Access information on Government legislation, and Submit a petition to the House of Commons. These are just a few ways we can be of service to you. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

OUTREACH REPORT by Rodger Halvorsen

Our March event held on Monday, March 16th carried a St. Patrick’s Theme. We received over 90 guests joining us for a fun afternoon with the help of 21 volunteers. Due to a schedule conflict we missed our group from Vulcan. Our entertainers for the afternoon were the musical duo “Just-Ank”. The afternoon began with a half hour of Card Bingo called by Bud and Ash followed by 45 minutes of Irish Tunes by Justine and Frank Sera. The March Door Prize winner was Anita, of Sunrise Village! Special thanks is ex-tended to our set up/take down crew which included Joe and Diane Smith, Woody Neeley and Glen Siggelkow.

We look forward to our next event. Our April 20th event theme “April Showers Bring May Flowers” will feature the colour Yellow with spe-cial tones of Easter and Spring. Our Musical entertainers will be “Ann Pauls & Friends”. Plan to be part of another great afternoon at our friendly centre. Register early and wear something yellow!

FALL IN-HOUSE TOURNAMENT AWARDS LUNCHEON BY Eva Deringer

On Thursday, March 12 we held our Annual Awards Presentations & Luncheon. Those invited were participants of our in-house tourna-ments which were held in November and December of 2014. Pro-grams represented included: Carpet Bowling, Floor Curling, Darts, Shuffleboard, Floor Shuffleboard, Pool (8 Ball), Pool (9 Ball), Snook-er and Pool Golf.

Winning participants were recognized with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Helen Gepneris and Bill McTighe as our MC’s, had the honor of giving out over 60 medals to our competitors. A delicious roast beef dinner prepared by our Nord-Bridge cooks completed the event. Congratulations to all of our winners and thanks to our volun-teers who helped with the luncheon and to our staff who contributed to this event.

A Little Travel Humor: On a cross-country bus trip, Mrs. Davis became ex-

tremely queasy due to motion sickness. She made her

way to the restroom only to find it locked. She went

back to her seat, laid her head back and tried to fight off the nausea. Unsuccessfully, she rolled her head to

the right and threw up on the lap

of a man who was dozing and who

was therefore unaware of what had happened. When the fellow

awoke, he was shocked to find

himself covered in vomit. Turning

to him, Mrs. Davis said, "There now, are you feeling better?"
