Welcome

Tuition for Arts Guild activities are among the lowest in town! Our rates are competitive and

reflect our focus on quality instruction. Most of our teachers are K-12 certified art educators

and/or professional artists. And remember, many families can claim children’s fine arts

classes as educational expenses on income taxes! Contact the office for receipts if needed.

Discounts: Arts Guild Members receive a 10% discount on all classes! Member (m) & non-

member (nm) prices are listed for each class. 50% sibling discounts are also available for Music

Together and Home School classes. A 5% multiple class discount is available for a student

registering for 3 or more dance classes in a semester.

Scholarships: Based on financial need, scholarships may be available for select classes (not

including materials) through the Community Action Center. Call (507) 664-3550.

Required Forms: All participants will be required to fill out emergency contact forms,

photo release waiver, etc. before the beginning of class. Forms will be emailed and can be

downloaded from our website.

We offer over 40 weekly classes in dance, music,

theater, literary and visual arts. Students, young

and old, novice and experienced, are invited to

explore their creative voices as they are guided by

teachers who are working professionals and

Music Together®

Join us in singing, playing instruments and dancing with your child(ren) ages birth to 5 in a playful, non-performance-oriented atmosphere. These developmentally appropriate classes guide children through the crucial early stages of music development and feature arrange-ments of original and traditional songs in a wide variety of tonalities, meters, and cultural styles. Tuition includes two professionally recorded CDs, a beautifully illustrated songbook, and a parent guide. This session's theme is Flute.

Anna Lisa Rustad majored in music at St. Olaf College and received her Masters in Teaching from St. Thomas University. Anna Lisa is a certified Music Together instructor. She also teaches piano and plays fiddle with Scandium, a contemporary Scandinavian folk band.

5 Classes For Youth - Ceramics Kids Clay Studio

StART the school year off right-with messy hands and tons of imagination! Students will be guided to create whatever they can dream up using slab and coil handbuilding techniques. Whether it's making a present for a parent or a decoration for their room, students are free to explore their creativity. Sign up for one or both sessions to continue the fun! Instructor: Kelly Lynn Stanton-Nutt

Kelly Lynn Stanton-Nutt, is better known as “Ms. Kelly” by her students. She has

been teaching Art at St. Dominic School for the past six years. A love of travel provides a world of creative inspiration in the art studio with her students. She was a graphic designer for several years before getting her MS in Art & Design Education from Pratt Institute.

Clay for Middle School

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of creating pottery through a blend of guided projects and individual work time. Instruction on basic wheel throwing techniques, the pulling of handles, decorating and glazing will be provided (hand building techniques may be demonstrated as well for students who wish to learn them). By the end of the course students will understand the processes involved in turning a lump of clay into a piece of functional art!

Making pottery has been a passion of Alan for over six years, and he has experience instructing ceramics classes for adults and youth at summer programs. Alan possesses a B.S. in behavioral neuroscience from Northeastern University and currently teaches biology at Shattuck St. Mary’s school. Both pottery and science cause him to appreciate the process of trial and error as a necessary method of discovery!

Little Picasso’s Club

What do you get when you combine Minecraft, dogs, and Spanish and Mexican art masters? An art class with lots of energy and life! Even if you don't like Minecraft, or like cats more than dogs, you're sure to find an art activity in this class that you will like. All levels of Spanish are welcomed, even students with no prior knowledge of Spanish.

Mar is a native of Spain and a Northfield resident since 1998. Mar is a writer, an artist, a translator, and creates beautiful home, business, and building portraits. She taught art and literacy classes for the Summer and Winter Plus students at the Northfield Public Schools and Spanish at St. Olaf and Carleton for over ten years before becoming the translator for the Northfield School District.

Picasso’s Club

Purple Door Youth Theater

PDYT is educational, hands-on, challenging, creative, inspiring and really fun. We will develop a full scale production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and learn about every aspect of producing the show along the way! Students may choose the acting or technical theater track, but each group will learn about both onstage and backstage tasks. All students must schedule an easy audition/interview slot for September 13 or 15, 4:00 – 6:00pm. Call the Arts Guild at 507-645-8877 to schedule your timeslot. Only students who are accepted into the program may register. Rehearsals begin on October 13. No classes on Oct. 20, 21, Nov. 24, 25. Performances Dec. 2-4 and 9-11.

Instructors: Rachel Haider, Joe Jorgenson & Helen Dillon

Rachel is a theater director, educator, performer, coach, choreographer, and arts administrator. Her extensive resume includes work with professional, community and educational theaters. Rachel brings a broad range of arts expertise to her students and productions, creating quality, memorable and fun theatrical experiences.

Joe studied theater at Waldorf College while pursuing a degree in education. He is a theater director, designer and builder and serves as the tech director for Purple Door Youth Theater. Whenever he has the opportunity, Joe also enjoys acting and singing. He teaches and builds sets at Northfield High School.

Helen is a very proud grandmother and one of our resident costumers. Helen loves watching how her costumes help actors become their characters. In addition to costuming at our theater and others, Helen has, for years, created many beautiful and fun pieces for our dance performances.

7 Classes For Youth - Dance

Creative Dance 1

Creative Dance 1 focuses on the joyful expression of movement. This class nourishes the development of the whole child. Dancers build technique through ballet and modern exercises. They learn how to craft space, time, and energy into choreography and build self-esteem through performance. Dancers grow in cognitive, social, and emotional intelligence through improvisation, creative problem-solving, and collaboration with others. No classes on Oct. 22 or Nov. 26.

Art Studio

Instructor: Sophia Diehl

Sophia has studied Ballet, Jazz, Modern, and Choreography through Ballet West Academy and Children’s Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is currently working towards her B.A. in Dance at St. Olaf College with a dance scholarship. Sophia has expanded her journey with movement through teaching in a Dancers with Disabilities class and an internship with InterPlay, an arts and social justice organization. Sophia has a passion for sharing the joy of movement and nurturing the creative voice of each individual. She is grateful to be teaching in the Northfield Arts Guild dance program.

Creative Dance 2

Creative Dance 2 builds upon the body awareness and relational skills of Creative Dance 1. Dancers develop strength and healthy alignment through ballet and modern technique. They use this physical foundation to develop an artistic voice through choreography, improvisation, and performance. This class takes a holistic approach to dance, allowing the child to use movement as a medium for connection and expression. No class on Oct. 22 or Nov 26.

Ballet 2/3

In this level the dancer builds a higher level of achievement and strength. Dancers are expected to articulate basic ballet technique and to perform longer ballet combinations, while also individually interpreting the movement material. No class on Nov. 22.

Ballet 4/5 Pointe

Pointe work begins after a student has acquired proper placement and strength on demi-pointe. Pointe class is an intensive session in which stamina, strength and speed will be developed in the advanced dancer. No class on November 21.

Ballet 1

The distinct movement vocabulary of classical ballet develops a strong body that expresses both beauty and grace. We focus on healthy anatomical placement while also encouraging students to develop their unique artistic voice. No class on November 22.

Instructors: Rebecca Lorang Rebecca is a new resident of Northfield and is excited to share her love of movement and dance with students at the Arts Guild. She attended Beloit College for her undergraduate degree and while there she performed in, choreographed for, and directed multiple department and student produced concerts. After graduating in 2010, she began teaching dance and has since instructed at small studios in Wisconsin and Minnesota, as well as preschools throughout the Twin Cities. Her training includes a wide variety of dance styles including ballet, jazz, tap, modern, hip hop, lyrical, creative movement and contemporary. Recently, she received her M.A. in Education from the University of Minnesota and will be joining the Northfield Middle School staff as an EL teacher this coming fall.

Modern

Modern Dance takes students on a soulful and rigorous exploration of movement. Dancers develop balance, coordination, strength, and healthy alignment. They apply these physical skills by learning combinations and creating movement patterns. Students learn to express ideas through movement, becoming articulate communicators. This class integrates the mind, body, and spirit through the study of dance technique and performance. No Class on November 21. This class is offered through Community Education. In this class we cultivate the natural and rhythmic abilities of the individual. This is instilled through a variety of music, vocabulary, fun rhythmic structures, and material. All levels welcome. Previous tap experience encouraged, but not necessary.

Advanced Modern

Advanced Modern continues to explore the elements of modern dance with greater specificity. Dancers refine their balance, spinal articulation, and alignment with classical modern technique. They also approach dance through the sensory and intuitive movement of post-modern tecnique. Students become dynamic artists, with the ability to learn movement material from a variety of forms and to synthesize this material into a choreographic expression. Students must have 3+ years experience in any style of dance. No class on November 22.

Classes For Youth - Dance Arts Guild dance classes are taught with a focus on sequential development of skills establishing the groundwork for aesthetic development and a lifelong appreciation of the arts. Students stay in the same level class throughout the entire school year.

Kids to Kids Hip Hop

This class will be an introduction to the hip hop style of dance. Taught by teens, students will learn the fundamentals of hip hop and how to use them to create their own hip hop voice. Both boys and girls who like to jam to pop music are encouraged to try this class. No class on October 21.

Dance Studio Ages 7 to 9

Instructors: Grace & James Muth Grace and James are freshmen twins at Northfield High School. They have been dancing since they were young, including four years of Hip Hop. Their goal as teachers is to introduce their students to the art and culture of Hip Hop through dancing. They hope to allow their students to have fun while exploring Hip Hop and expressing themselves.

Dance Theater Company

In its 8th season, The Dance Theater Company includes technique classes and choreography. Dancers create pieces in ballet, jazz and modern to be performed during Winter Walk on Dec 8th at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.. Dancers need at least 2 years of dance experience and instructor permission. Extended classes (4:30-7:30) on Nov. 17 and Dec. 1. No classes on Oct. 20 or Nov. 24. This class is offered through Community Education. Instructors: Kathleen Pender & Shari Setchell

Kathleen grew up in Northfield, MN and received her B.A. in Dance from St. Olaf College. Kathleen assists classes with Young Dance in Minneapolis. She is also Company Manager with performance company Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater and performs for Minneapolis-based choreographer Taja Will. With deep passion for dance education and performance, Kathleen is grateful to be teaching for the Northfield Arts Guild's dance program, which served as her dance foundation and fostered her development as an artist.

Shari is both a registered yoga teacher and certified Global Somatics Practitioner; she applies somatic and yogic principles training in her ballet instruction. A seven-time choreographer for Northfield High School's Rock 'n' Roll Revival, she also choreographs the fall musicals. Furthermore, Shari teaches dance at Arcadia Charter School, and choreographs musicals with the Arts Guild and at the Paradise Center for the Arts. In all her work, Shari’s focus is on empowering her dancers by giving them tools to create their own style of performance. More than anything, she wants her students to know they are artists who can use dance and theater to express themselves in the world.

Folklorico Club Come join the club—the Folklorico Club! In an effort to be as affordable as possible to all families in our community, this class has shifted to a monthly club fee. Regardless of the number of times you meet in a month—the rate remains the same easy to remember price: just $25! To continue classes beyond the first month, families will be asked to pay a $35 annual registration fee (waived for NAG members and for families who qualify for free and reduced lunch). All levels of Folklorico explore traditional dance from various Mexican States. The rhythms are strong and the music is energetic. Students should wear comfortable clothes that allow room for movement; shoes for boys and girls will be provided. No class on November 23 or 26. All classes are held in the Dance Studio.

Homeschool Classes Take a tour around the world through the arts! Northfield Arts Guild Home School classes inspire students to tie together various strands of their learning, from history to science, to literature and folklore, through experiential art, music, and dance-focused lessons. 12 Classes For Home Schoolers

Kelly Lynn Stanton-Nutt, is better known as “Ms. Kelly” by her students. She has been teaching

Art at St. Dominic School for the past five years. A love of travel provides a world of creative

inspiration in the art studio with her students. She was a graphic designer for several years before

getting her MS in Art & Design Education from Pratt Institute.

Kate Stuart began teaching music at the age of 17, dance a few years later, and hasn’t stopped

since. After earning a B.Mus. and M.A., she pursued further graduate studies in music and dance

while choreographing ten years of Madrigal Dinners at two universities, dancing at the Wisconsin

Shakespeare Festival, and teaching at St. Olaf College. Recently she has been teaching at the

Northfield Arts Guild and Northfield Senior Center, sharing folkdance at the annual SCSC Young

Artist Conference, and offering music and dance classes for fellow homeschool families.

Laura Goodwin grew up in Northfield and attended classes at the Arts Guild as youngster. She is a Rhode Island School of Design graduate, who taught in RISD’s children’s program. Laura’s journey into the field of autism began after a family member was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Laura currently works as Educational Assistant at NHS in the autism program.

Autism and the Arts is an art program for teens and young adults on the autism

spectrum that began in 2010. The purpose of the program is to provide the opportunity

for participants to develop art and social skills in a well structured, safe, social environ-

ment. The A+ Art Club and A+ Holiday Mart meet at and are programs of the Northfield

Arts Guild. These programs are led by Laura Goodwin, with the help of peer mentors

from St. Olaf College and the Northfield community. An Autism Specialist consults with

teachers and volunteers to work with club members on the autism spectrum.

Get Ornamental!

Using underglazes we'll decorate a number of plain white bisque fired ornaments pre-made by the instructor. In these one-day workshops, add color, designs, or personalize with names and initials. Underglazes work a lot like paint so no clay experience necessary. Bring your creativity and sense of fun! Expect to decorate up to 8 ornaments during class. Children must be accompanied by parent, and both must register for class.

While earning her Bachelors degree in Studio Arts at Carleton College, Emily was introduced to ceramics, and she has worked with that medium ever since. She has lived in Northfield since graduating in 2002, and has been a Northfield Arts Guild employee, volunteer and Open Clay Studio Monitor.

Wheel Throwing for Adults

The focus of this class is to introduce and practice the basics of wheel-throwing including but not limited to throwing cylinders, bowls, plates, trimming, and adding handles. Plus, learn about glazes and glazing techniques to decorate your clay piece and have a spectacular finished piece of artwork. This class is offered through Community Education. Beginning Watercolor

Join in on the adventure of mastering watercolor- whether it's your first time or you've dabbled in watercolor before, this class will offer you more "tools" in your pocket to help you make great work. We will focus on elements of design as well as unique features of the watercolor medium.

Jennifer lives in Northfield with her husband, Noah, with whom she graduated from St. Olaf College in 2013 with degrees in English and Studio Art. Her artwork has been shown at the Hideaway Coffeehouse as well as at Life21 Church. Her favorite art mediums are watercolor, oil, and digital design. She enjoys writing poetry, interior design, and sewing adorable things for her coming first baby!

Create Public Art!

Channel your inner artist/architect! Installation art is an exciting artistic genre of 3-D works that are often site-specific and designed to transform perceptions of a space. Explore this art form and be part of creating an indoor art installation. The class will be divided into 3 parts: learn and talk about art installations; practice building temporary installations; and help construct/install a final piece that will be publicly displayed in Northfield for two-weeks. Throughout, the class will work together in a hands-on learning environment. The class will conclude with a party to unveil the art installation to the public.

Martin received his BA in studio art and cultural geography from St. Olaf College in 2000. As an artist, he’s worked primarily in sculpture and installation, including a residency and creating a work for Franconia Sculpture Park. He enjoys public art that brings people together and moves conversations in new and perhaps fun and adventurous directions. Originally from Northfield, Martin returned from points north and west in 2006, and has since worked at Laura Baker Services as founding director of LBSA’s artist-in-residence program and director of in-home supports. Building Portraits

Learn how to draw a building with perspective first in pencil, finishing in ink. Mar will show you how to capture the personality of your favorite building-be it a house, commercial or public building. Build your observation and drawing skills, while learning how to edit and reflect the important lines that create the essence of the building. If the weather allows it we can even try drawing some buildings plein air. Bring photos of your building selection to class.

Painting at Parkview

Part open studio, part instruction, part experimentation, this class meets the needs of individual participants based on their creative goals. Riki Kölbl Nelson, an artist and arts educator, has taught students aged 9 to 90. She provides exercises designed to stretch the skills and creativity of the participants. She facilitates group feedback and gives encouragement to take your art making to the next level for both beginners and advanced students. Participants choose their preferred medium to work in - watercolors, acrylic, oils, pastels, or color pencils--and purchase their own materials for the class. This class can also be helpful for those who wish to add art work to their memoirs. Some material for the students is on hand at the first session.

Elaine is a professional oil and watercolor painter and a former state of Massachusetts K-8 visual art educator. This specialized method of teaching allows students with no previous drawing or painting experience to complete a painting of a subject of their choice as they learn fundamental color mixing, composition and how to “see” as an artist.

Open Life Drawing

Hone your figure drawing skills by working with live models, costumed and nude, in this monthly workshop. Open to all skill levels, whether you are looking to develop your drawing skills or enhance your portfolio. Work with live models in the medium of your choice. *Please note: This is an uninstructed class, easels are available but no other materials are provided. Teen/Adult Ballet is an Advanced Beginning class that will help dancers further their understanding of ballet technique. Class will focus on strength, alignment and stamina while building kinesthetic awareness through embodiment work. Students will develop comfort with ballet vocabulary in a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere that fosters a community dynamic and supports individuals to become their own very best dancer selves. Andrea Mirenda has spent more than 20 years as a ballroom dance educator. She is co-founder of the nonprofit Heart of Dance which provides social and emotional learning to all ages through the medium of partner dance. She is certified through the National Dance Council of America, and is an experienced dance instructor, choreographer, studio manager, multi-studio owner, regional director, and competition organizer. She currently coaches the competition and performance teams at Carleton College and St. Mary's

University and serves as a judge and emcee at ballroom dance competitions.

Want to teach a class or a workshop? While class proposals are accepted year-round, deadlines for submitting a proposal for an upcoming term is approximately three months prior to the beginning of that term (for example, the deadline for fall classes would be June 1 for classes). Deadline dates will be posted on our website. Classes are generally held on a weekly basis for ten weeks and are 1 – 2 hours long. Workshops generally run one or two days and are 4 – 6 hours long. Stand-alone classes are taught as individual units with no direct relation to other classes, while sequential classes increase in complexity from one session to the next and may require a prerequisite or permission of the teacher.
