Inside!
There will be plenty of thrills
in Manchester next week, as
Vermont’s own traveling youth
circus, Circus Smirkus, returns to
the Dorr Farm on Bonnet Street
with shows at 2 and 7 p.m. on July
12 and 13.
Celebrating its 25th anniversa-
ry this year, the circus’s theme is
“Topsy Turvey Time Travel: A
Blast from the Past & Fun from
the Future.”
Circus Smirkus is the only
youth circus in the country to
travel “under the canvas,” as a
traditional traveling show com-
plete with Big Top tent.
A Smirkus show features an
original score, live music, custom-
made costumes, and professional-
ly choregraphed dance. This
year’s troupe of 29 youngsters
ages 11 to 18 will perform nearly
70 shows in 15 cities to an audi-
ence totaling 50,000 in towns
throughout Vermont and the
Northeast. They perform as jug-
glers, clowns, aeralists, wirewalk-
ers, acrobats and more.
This year’s circus includes
seven troupers from Vermont:
Maia Gawor-Sloane, 18, of
Richmond; Noah Nielsen, 17, of
Montpelier; Brin Schoellkopf, 15,
of Warren; Liam Gundlach, 15, of
Thetford; siblings Sam, 16, and
Sonya Gurwitt, 18, of Norwich;
and Emily Wunderle, 11, of
Rockingham. Emily’s eight-year-
old sister Ariana will perform as a
“trouper-in-training.” Keenan
Wright-Sanson, 15, of Saratoga
Springs has also joined the troupe.
The remaining performers
come from eight other states, as
well as the United Kingdom and
New Zealand.
Founded in 1987, Smirkus was
the dream of internationally
renowned clown Rob Mermin,
who began the program in
Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom
with the help of filmmaker Jay
Craven and performers Donny
Osman of Plainfield, VT and
Stewart Lippe of Tampa, FL. It
has grown from a three-town tour
to an annual tour that takes the
Circus coming to town!
