Easter School Year 6 parents have received a letter home about Easter school – Tuesday 29th – Thursday 31st March from 9.25am – 1.00pm. It is vital that your child comes. We offer a great opportunity to revise facts and sharpen skills in preparation for SATs this May; children will be working in small focused groups. Please ensure your child arrives on time; they do not need to wear school uniform, but should dress appropriately. All resources and a healthy snack will be provided, so your child does not need to bring bags and personal items (unless you specifically need them to). Mobile phones will be kept by a member of staff at the school and returned at the end of each morning. Year in, year out, we have found that Easter School has made a massive difference to our students’ results and this year is sure to be the same.

Earth Hour 2016 –
8.30-9.30pm, Saturday 19th March
Our world is beautiful. Let’s help it by supporting Earth Hour. The lights from cities around the world will be switched off for Earth Hour. This reduces energy use and signals a commitment to fighting climate change. During this hour we encourage you, along many hundreds of millions of people across the globe, to switch off your lights and any other devices that use electricity. On Friday 18th March the whole school collaborated to make an Earth Hour installation. Led by Mrs Rawat, all classes visited the installation and discussed what it meant and what actions we could take to reduce our energy use. ‘In our class we made little houses out of card. For the roof we used recycled paper which had lots of different patterns on them to make it look unique. They put tea-lights inside and it looked as though there were people still awake inside. In the assembly all of the things we had made were put together. I thought it was really beautiful because I liked the bit where it said 'we use recycle' because it’s saying that you don't have to waste stuff. I liked the whole thing.’ – Jia-Yin (Turkey) For some ideas on how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, check the following website – http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/explore/reduce/ Thanks to Mrs Rawat, Mr Lopez, Ms Jo and Mrs Kaur for bringing it all together.

Easter Bonnet Parade – Thursday 24th March
It’s Easter next weekend, so that means it’s time to get eggs-tremely (sorry!) creative. Picking up on the recycling theme (from Earth Hour), we are looking to see the most spectacular Easter bonnets, made only with recycled materials (NO SHOP-BOUGHT BONNETS PLEASE). The parade will be on Thursday morning. We can’t wait to see our students’ efforts. So get CRACKING! Fantastic prizes await!
Festival of Colour – Holi – Wednesday 23rd March
This coming Wednesday we will be celebrating Holi – the Hindu festival of colour, in which Hindus welcome spring. The whole school will be immersed in this festival and Hindu culture, through dance, music, art, costume, food and story-telling. The day will culminate in the afternoon with a ‘colour party’ – where the children will throw brightly coloured paint powder into the air. Please ensure your child wears white to school this Wednesday (the paint is natural, non-toxic, won’t stain and is biodegradable).
We know the children are going to have a fantastic day whilst learning about the traditions of the Hindu culture during a major world celebration. Providing the children with these opportunities and memories are significant in promoting understanding and respect for others.
Metropolitan Police Workshops Last week we had two officers from the Metropolitan Police come into school to work with the children. The police officers talked to the children about the dangers of crossing the road and how to cross safely. They spoke about who is a safe stranger that the children could approach if they need help. For the older children the officers raised awareness of gangs and the reasons why it is important not to join them.

Day-Mer Turkish and Kurdish Community Centre – After School Clubs The Day-Mer Turkish and Kurdish Community Centre have started a couple of After School Clubs. In Stoke Newington, there is a Drama/Photography Club and, a bit further away, a Homework Club on Kingsmead Way. Please see below for more details. Turkish versions are available from the school office.
Wednesday Coffee Mornings Every Wednesday from 9.00-9.30am there will be a coffee morning held in the Canteen. Each week, one of the school’s leaders will be talking about their area of responsibility. Why not join other parents afterwards for a coffee? The final meeting this term will be on 23rd March, which will be led by Mrs Rawat, who will be talking about Science at Northwold. We look forward to seeing you there.

e-Safety – Parents Leaflet
As promised last week, here’s page two of a really useful leaflet for parents with resources that you can help you answer all sorts of questions you might have about internet safety.
If there are any areas of e-Safety you want to know more about, please feel free to discuss it with Mr Braune, your child’s teacher or one of the school’s leaders.
