Elementary Career Day

CAREER DAY 2010

Another wonderful Career Day was shared by students in 3rd

-6th

Grade on Friday, November 5th

! Third graders listened to a dental technician who taught them how to make toothpaste, saw a slide show by the fire

department, learned about seeing-eye dogs, and heard what a health care specialist does in our community. Fourth graders learned about singing from one of our own staff members who has sung with his family at a Spurs game! A master gardener shared all kinds of facts about bugs while a veterinarian talked about removing a tumor from a goldfish,

among other interesting facts, and members of the fire department gave information about their shiny red fire truck. Fifth Graders were treated to beautiful music from a musician who played his saxophone, a cyber systems operator who

shared her experiences traveling on Air Force One, a military police dog trainer who brought along his 4-legged trainee, and an animal care specialist who works at Sea World with sea lions, otters, and anything smaller than Shamu!

Sixth Graders listened to an engineer, as well as an IT Systems Manager, a veterinarian technician, and sampled goodies from a pastry chef.

Everyone from students to teachers to speakers had a wonderful morning! A special thanks to guidance counselor Nancy Meyer for organizing such a fun and informative event.

Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I

married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten

years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary

school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early

Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr

old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I

look forward to an exciting school year.

Stacey Profile: Coach Amber Greeness Photo and interview by Whitney Brown, Senior

1. What sports do you coach and which is your favorite? At Stacey this year I coach volleyball, basketball, and tennis (JV and Varsity volleyball and basketball and middle school, jv and varsity tennis). In years past, here at Stacey, I have also assisted in track and coached baseball. I coached softball at another school.

2. How long have you been at Stacey High School? This is my 6

th year at Stacey.

3. What sports did you play in high school? I played softball, basketball, and ran indoor and outdoor track. 4. Is there anything you would like to change about the sports programs at Stacey?

Yes, I would love for our sports programs to open up to the middle school. I believe if we had a middle school sports program our school would be more competitive at the JV and Varsity level. I would also like to see Stacey start a softball program. We have had a lot of interest over the years, and I believe the girls here would work hard to make the program a success.

5. What is your favorite team? Picking one favorite team is tough. I guess it would depend on what sport you were asking about and on

what level.

NCAA Women’s Basketball: Tennessee

NCAA Men’s Basketball: UNC NCAA Football: Alabama, Michigan, LSU NCAA Softball: Tennessee, Georgia, Washington WNBA: Sparks, Stars NFL: New England MLB: Braves WPF: Akron

6. What do you like most about coaching? When I coached at the college level, all of the athletes playing for me were well skilled in their sport. I didn’t have to teach fundamentals, instead I loved teaching the strategy involved in playing a great game. I loved being able to put a talented team on the field and knowing the result of the game came down to which team prepared hardest in practice, which team was able to execute to perfection, and which coach had the better strategy on that particular day. Now that I coach at the high school level, teaching is a big key. Teaching teamwork, determination, and the ability to overcome any obstacle is important to me. I am a demanding coach and ask a lot of my athletes. Many times students feel they cannot accomplish the tasks I have set in front of them. The best part of my day is when one athlete gets so excited and says “Coach, look I did it”. See, I am not one that believes hand holding and coddling is the key to teaching self-esteem. I believe pushing an athlete further than they thought possible and watching them succeed, watching them work hard and accomplish their goal is what builds self esteem. Building self-esteem will help students achieve their goals. When my athletes make it through a demanding season they know they can achieve anything they put their minds to. 7. If you had the chance would you teach another subject? I wouldn’t mind teaching psychology or sociology. I took a lot of psych in college and really enjoyed the courses. 8. Is your family as big into sports as you are? Yes and no. All of my siblings and parents like to play sports, but most of them do not watch it on TV like I do. My dad loves hockey. That is one sport he will watch on television all day everyday. He even kept statistics for the Rampage when he lived here. Although my siblings and mom do not watch a lot of sports on television, they are huge supporters of mine and of Stacey Jr. Sr. High so when they are in town they always try to come to a game. 9. If you could have any other job in the world, what would you choose? There are many days when I think about going back to coach at the college level, but I do enjoy coaching high school students. If I had to choose another job it would either be Sports Law or working for education in the political arena. 10. Are Codia & Whitney your favorite twins?! :) Yes, def. my favorite

On Thursday, Lackland Elementary School had a ceremony to honor veterans. Teachers and staff who had formerly served and those who are still active, as well as parents were treated to a

performance and slideshow. The entire student body donned red, white, and blue and filled the elementary gym. It was terrific!
