November 5, 2016Potpie Dinner

If it’s November, then it’s time for Pot Pie and Toys For Tots. Once again we met at the Little KutztownFire Co. to enjoy a delicious pot pie dinner . But first we were visited by Commandant John Gingrichfrom Lebanon and his wife Beverly . They represent the Toys for Tots program in Lebanon County whichserves over 800 families. John was very appreciative of the large number of toys that our club haddonated. The toys will all be distributed to families in Lebanon County. John did mention that theyreceive quite a few toys for very young children but not as many for older children . The programserves up to High School age. So next year maybe we should think about things for the 10 to 17 agegroup . Suggestions were makeup, jewelry, scarfs, and curling irons. John also mentioned that there aresome older handicapped individuals in their service area.

As always the pot pie was wonderful … I always enjoy the homemade bread with apple butter … what atreat. It’s always nice to take home a quart of pot pie and a loaf of bread to enjoy another day.

Thank you Joane Dundore for making the arrangements for dinner and with Toys For Tots. Also aspecial thank you for baking all the goodies that were raffled off …

Christmas PartyDecember 14th

Our annual Christmas Party was held Wednesday December 14th at the Timbers Restaurant in Mt.Gretna . The dining room was lit with white lights and beautifully decorated for the season. Theextensive buffet was ready so after a prayer led by outgoing President Ed Houser, we filled ourplates. Dinner was delicious and quite varied so I don’t believe anyone went home hungry. The dessertswere exceptional and the service very good.

After dinner was finished , and the awards presented (see page 4), we were introduced to theevening’s entertainment. The JOY Choir from the Hershey Evangelical Free Church had come to singfor us - JOY stands for Just Older Youth. They were a fun group decked out with reindeer and Santaheadbands and really seemed to be having a great time. They sang quite a few Christmas songs andinvited us to join in the singing. We also had a musical treat when we were visited by the AndrewsSisters.

A special solo was sung by Caitlin Andrews-Weber … it was lovely. She is the daughter of Christinaand Candice.

I would like to thank Terry Von Nieda for making all the arrangements. Thank you Sylvia Houser forbringing us the JOY Choir—Thank you Betty Funck and Pat Von Nieda for the candy and thank youMary Jane Rossiter for the pretty table arrangements (poinsettias in a vintage car). One luckyperson at each table got to take the arrangement home. All in all, it was quite a fun evening.

My Lark Regal 2-dr hardtop, was sold new at A-1 Motors in Chambersburg, PA…(zip codes began in 1963) I am thefourth owner and the car currently has 37,800 miles on the odometer. It has a 6 cylinder 170 cu. in. overheadvalve engine, 112 hp. This engine was first introduced in 1939 as a flathead engine. For 1961 Studebaker engineersmodified the lower end of the block and developed an overhead valve head for the 170 cu.in. engine.

The 1962 base price tag for this Lark Regal 2-dr hardtop was $2,218.00. It left the factory with optionaloverdrive transmission, reclining front bench seat, undercoating, hill holder, twin traction (posi), white sidewalltires, cimatizer (heater), wheel discs, front bumper guards, radio and antenna plus $63.98 shipping from SouthBend, Indiana to Chambersburg, PA. Increased the price to $2,716.25 which equals $21,415.73 in 2016 dollars.

This Lark was driven 4,100 miles from 2008 to May 2016. The car was towed to Florida in 2012 and I rescued itfrom Florida in May 2016.

With the low mileage I falsely believed everything would be wonderful. Not so. I discover cars must be exercised, maybe I could start a business exercising old cars ??

Inspecting the brakes, brake fluid looked like mud, all wheel cylinders leaked, master cylinder needed replaced, brake hoses were dry rotted, rear axle bearings were LOUD, the grease was dried out, bearings were rough, front wheel bearing grease was dried out, cleaned and re-packed with fresh grease. All dirty work.

The rear end seal was leaking, transmission seal was leaking. I changed dirty fluids in trans and rear end. Allcoolant hoses were questionable. Muffler was holey. Exhaust manifold was leaking. All 4 original shocks werereplaced. However the radio worked good !

Spark plugs, wires, points, rotor, cap were replaced. The Carter carburetor was rebuilt by Paul Supan. The engineran better but still rough. The engine oil turned milky white shortly after I changed it…This kept me awake at night.

Lucky for me Studebaker replacement parts are easily available thru multi vendors and swap meets.

We ran a compression test and #4 and #5 cylinders had zero compression. When head was removed, #4 and #5had burnt exhaust valves, also a leaking head gasket. The head was also cracked and was junked. I found a head onthe internet, and had it redone at Feaser Co. in Harrisburg. Cracking was a common problem with the redesignedOHV 6 cyl. Engine. Glad I found a replacement head on the internet.

The Lark was returned to the road . I entered it at the Hershey Show, HPOF. Received an award from the show.

I enjoy driving the Lark. I really like the overdrive transmission. The AM radio has a FM converter installed on it.Turning a radio with a dial is a thing of the past too.

There is suspension work to do yet, front bushings and rear spring bushings need replaced. I need to re-torquethe cylinder head and exhaust manifold. Check valve adjustment. The gas gauge sending units needs replaced. Iam thankful to be able to work on my cars and enjoy them.

Lost Words from Our Childhood

Today we live in an age of technology with words like cell phone, text, twitter and Bluetooth. We havecomputers, with a user name and a password to email, and gmail and we can use it to face book,Google and Skype. I’m sure you can think of many more but I want to tell you about some lost wordsfrom our childhood.

Would you recognize the word Murgatroyd ? Heavens to Murgatroyd !

Lost words form our childhood; words gone as fast as the buggy whip !

The other day, a not so elderly (65) lady said something to her son about driving a Jalopy and he looked at herquizzically and said , what is a Jalopy ? He had never heard of the word Jalopy !!She knew she was old but notthat old.

Well I hope you are Hunky Dory after you read this and chuckle. About a month ago, I illuminated some oldexpressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology.

These phrases included : “Don’t touch that dial”, “Carbon copy”, “You sound like a broken record” and “Hungout to dry”.

Back in the olden days we had words like — Heavens to Betsy! Gee whillikers! Jumping Jehoshaphat ! HolyMoley ! We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley and even a regular guy couldn’t accuse us of being aknucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China !

Back in the olden days, life used to be swell but when’s the last time anything was swell ? Swell has gone theway of beehives, pageboys, and the D.A. , of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedalpushers. Oh, my aching back. Kilroy was here but he isn’t anymore.

We wake up from what surely has been just a short nap and before we can say, “well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle!“Or “This is a fine kettle of fish!” - we discover that the words we grew up with have vanished with scarcely anotice from our tongues and our pens and our keyboards.

Where have all those phrases gone ? Long gone: Pshaw/ The milkman did it / Hey ! It’s your nickel./ Don’tforget to pull the chain/ Knee high to a grasshopper/ Well Fiddlesticks !/ Going like sixty / I’ll see you in thefunny papers. / Don’t take any wooden nickels. / Heavens to Murgatroyd !

It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter has liver pills. This can be disturbingstuff !

We of a certain age have been blessed to live in a changeful time. For a child each new word is like a shiny toy,a toy that has no age. We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there arewords that once did not exist and there were words that once strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and noware heard no more, except in our collective memory. It’s one of the greatest advantages of aging.
