Luella SlanerLuella Slaner, whose Cinderella teams nearly won

two major team events in the Eighties, died Nov. 3 ather home in Scarsdale NY. She was 82.

Slaner was an expert golfer, a former mayor of herhometown and an authority on fusion energy. She be-came Marty Bergen’s bridge student in 1978. “She wasa gutsy lady,” recalled Bergen. “Playing against goodcompetition really brought out the best in her.”

Slaner and Bergen, along with teammates WarrenRosner, Mark Cohen and Jerry Goldfein, finished sec-ond in the 1982 Vanderbilt Knockout Teams, losing tothe George Rosenkranz team (Eddie Wold, MikePassell-Jim Jacoby, Jeff Meckstroth-Eric Rodwell).

The following year, Slaner’s team (Bergen, Cohen,Goldfein, Larry Cohen and Brian Glubok) finished sec-ond in the Spingold Knockout Teams. “We had lost toJeff and Eric in Niagara Falls,” recalled Bergen. “Whenwe drew them the next year, Luella said, ‘Good, I’vegot a score to settle with them’.”

She did, taking over the #1 seed. “Both times whenLuella finished her half, we were dead even or ahead,”said Bergen. “She had one of the best records in theworld against Jeff and Eric.”

Slaner advanced to the final but lost to the MalcolmBrachman team (Ron Andersen, Bob Hamman-BobbyWolff, Bobby Goldman-Paul Soloway).

Bergen summarized: “Although Cinderella neverbecame a bride, in her two adventures as a bridesmaid, grandma had a blast as the belle of the ball.”

Survivors are daughters Eugenia Ames, BarbaraWinslow and Deborah Slaner Larkin and grandchil-dren Alexander and Juliet Ames, Jessie and SamanthaWinslow and Margaret Larkin.

Zero Tolerance updateThe Zero Tolerance program, started in Ontario

clubs more than four years ago, is going strong andreceiving credit for an exodus of players from interme-diate games into open games.

Barbara Seagram, owner/manager of KateBuckman’s Bridge Studio in Toronto, says ZT “hasmade such a huge difference. We have always providedour less-experienced players with a separate room inwhich to play, along with their own director.

“This has made for an expensive but flourishingnewcomer/intermediate program. The downside wasthat the players got so comfortable there that they werepetrified of moving into the open game in the big room.”

ZT has changed that, according to Seagram. “Overthe past two years, the atmosphere has improved sodramatically among the open players that there has beena huge exodus from the intermediate games into theopen games. We have had to hand out very few scoringpenalties for Zero Tolerance. The fact that the policy isin place seems to keep the players in line and the per-ception that we are monitoring behavior at all timesmakes everyone happier.

“The players now never hesitate to report unpleas-antness whereas before they considered it part of thegame that they had to tolerate.”

Seagram added, “We have had to ask several play-ers to take a vacation from our club. They must be sub-jected to an interview with us before they are permit-ted to return. The bad ones don’t.”

2001 Fall NABC. She and her team are in Las Vegas tovie for major championships.

Although few pundits underestimated the Meltzerteam at the world championships, the squad would nothave been a handicapper’s favorite. There were severalstrong teams in the Bermuda Bowl field, including thedefending champions, led by Nick Nickell. That squadhad obliterated Brazil in the Bermuda Bowl final inBermuda last year.

There were also Italy, the reigning Olympiad cham-pions, and the formidable team from Poland, whichtook Italy to the wire in the Olympiad final inMaastricht last fall. Norway, with the redoubtable GeirHelgemo, was also among the favorites.

The Meltzer team played well in the round-robin,finishing third, just one Victory Point behind Polandand Norway, who tied for the lead. The Nickell teamwas fourth.

USA II drew France in the quarterfinal round andhad little difficulty with the host squad, dispatchingthem 276-178. Meltzer and company were slated for asemifinal match with the Nickell team if USA I couldget past Italy. That matchup never happened as Italy,in a virtual tie with USA I after four sets, ran roughshodover the Americans in the final two sessions, winningby a cumulative score of 124-9. The final score was262-146.

Next up for Meltzer and teammates was Poland, which had a 3-IMP carryover for the semifinal round.Norway would meet Italy in the other semifinal match. The morning line no doubt forecast a rematch betweenthe Olympiad finalists, but Norway and the Meltzersquad had other ideas.

USA II started strongly against Poland and never letup, emerging with a 169-133 victory. With each step,Meltzer gained confidence, and she seemed to relax de-spite the mounting pressure of the world championship.“Once we got to the quarterfinal,” Meltzer said, “I feltlike a winner, and when we made it to the final, in mymind I had already won the Bermuda Bowl. I thoughtto myself, ‘I look pretty good in silver.’”

In the championship round, USA II faced Norway,a team of confident young players who had held off afinal-round charge by Italy to win 194-189.

Norway started against the Americans as thoughthey would repeat the USA-Brazil blowout from Janu-ary of 2000. At the halfway point of the Bermuda Bowlfinal, Norway had a 164-85 lead. It looked as thoughMeltzer would not fulfill her hope of becoming the firstwoman to win the most prestigious prize in bridge.

The match, however, was 128 boards – not 64 –and four of Meltzer’s teammates have been in champi-onship rounds before and emerged as winners.

In the fifth set, Meltzer and Larsen teamed withStansby and Martel to try to get back into the match. They did just that, clobbering the Norwegians 69-28 toshave the deficit to a manageable 38 IMPs with 48boards to play.

This deal was one of the keys to the Americancomeback.

This is what Brian Senior, assistant editor of thedaily bulletin in Paris, had to say about the decisivedeal:

When Martel could rebid his spades freely atthe four level, Stansby took charge by asking forkey cards then inviting seven. Martels 6ª deniedthe ability to bid the grand slam himself and alsodenied a minor-suit king. Stansby had no reasonto bid the grand now and signed off in six. Martelwon the heart lead while throwing a diamond fromhand, then laid down the «A. He had got thetrumps wrong but in a safe manner.

Martel continued by ruffing the low heart, cash-ing the «K and playing on clubs. Whether Helgemoruffed in at some point or waited to be thrown inwith the «Q, Martel had avoided the diamond fi-nesse. He duly scored up plus 1430.

More from Senior:Meltzers weak jump overcall added momen-

tum to the auction. Boye Brogeland began byshowing a good raise to 4« and Erik Saelensmindeinvited seven over Larsens 5ª barrage bid.

Looking at some many key cards, it was nosurprise when Brogeland accepted the invitation.

Saelensminde also won the heart lead and laiddown the «A. He failed to find the endplay, per-haps not having sufficient enthusiasm to look forit when he was already down in a grand slam.

Eventually, he took the diamond finesse andfinished two off for minus 200 and 17 IMPs toUSA II.

The Americans seemed to gain momentum fromthe surge in the fifth set, and they followed with an-other explosive round to tie the match at 195 with 32deals to go. At that point, Meltzer began to believe.

“When we tied the score,” she said, “my warriorswere armed for battle. I’ve never seen them so ready.”

Norway won the seventh set by 2 IMPs, but USAII could not be denied in the final round, winning by23 IMPs to seal the victory.

Meltzer said the Norwegians were gallant in de-feat and showed their sportsmanship with hearty con-gratulations for the new Bermuda Bowl champions.

Said Meltzer: “Geir came up to me and said, ‘Thiswas the only time I wanted you to come in second, butI’m very happy for you.’”

At the victory banquet, Weichsel grabbed the mi-crophone after the medals were presented. Weichsel, now a three-time world champion, congratulated Nor-way for their fine play. “We had destiny on our side,”Weichsel told the crowd, “or they surely would havebeen victorious.”

The only way to lose the hand is to play off twotop trumps and then start clubs. East ruffs early andplays a heart, a most unhappy ending for you.

There’s something about North American BridgeChampionships and Las Vegas that always producesrecord attendance.

Consider:• Las Vegas’ first NABC, held in the fall of 1973, drew13,464 tables – a record for the fall and the fifth largest ever.• Las Vegas’ next NABC – Summer 1979 – set a sum-mer record with 18,517 tables.• That record held until the Summer of 1985 when LasVegas broke its own record with 19,828 tables.• The all-time attendance record – a whooping 24,221tables – was set in Las Vegas in the summer of 1991.

The all-time attendance record for a Fall NABCbelongs to Orlando which attracted 14,980 tables in1992. Any bets on this year’s attendance – and anotherrecord for Las Vegas?

Pass 3« Pass 5«Pass 6« All Pass

On this deal from the final session of the 1991 LifeMaster Pairs, Lynn Deas drew the right inference. Shewas playing with Beth Palmer.

Palmer’s 5« bid asked about the quality of Deas’trumps. They were reasonably good and Deas went onto slam.

East led the ª7 and Deas won the jack with herking. She led a spade and West won the ace. A heartcame back to the 10, queen and ace.

Deas pulled the last trump and ruffed a heart. Asshe considered her next move, Deas realized that a suc-cessful diamond finesse would see her home but shedoubted the hook would work.

“West is a good player,” she said, “and I drew theinference that if he held the ©K, he would have ledfrom it – instead of from queen-empty fourth of hearts.”

Deas backed her judgment by cashing the ©A andrunning trumps. East was caught in a vise, unable toguard clubs and hearts. Deas was destined to take her12th trick with the ̈ 7 or the ª5.

Deas’ plan would have succeeded even if West hadoriginally been dealt three clubs instead of two. On therun of the spades, East would have to guard hearts whileWest would have to cling to the ©K. Neither could holdthree clubs, and the slam would come home on a doublesqueeze.

NABC + Las Vegas = record every time

Faster, faster!Slow play, as opposed to careful or thoughtful play,

is discourteous not only to your at-the-table opponentsbut to the entire field.

In duplicate bridge, a consistently slow pair candelay the entire game by minutes -- that seem like hours.

The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge lists thesecauses of slow play, some or all of them violations ofthe Proprieties of duplicate play:

• Delay in coming to the table after a round hasbeen called .

• Discussion of boards previously played .• Failure to pass at least one completed board

promptly, or pass one board if the other has not beencompleted .

• Inattention during the bidding necessitatingfrequent reviews of the auction .

• Post-mortems, particularly those involving theplayer whose duty it is to score the board just played .

• Failure (in the event of an infraction) to accepta director’s ruling pleasantly and promptly. .

• Blaming previous opponents for present tardi-ness instead of concentrating on finishing the presentdeal .

• Waiting for a miracle to change opponent’saces to deuces so that a bad contract will not receive itsdeserved result.

Smoking policyThis is Las Vegas, so smoking regulations are very

lenient in hotels and casinos. But remember that onceyou cross into the convention area of the Hilton, youare in ACBL country and there is no smoking in theplaying areas or pre-function areas. If you are playingin any Pavilion room or the Barron or Conrad rooms, the fastest smoking access is outside on the patio. Thoseplaying in the ballroom may want to head toward thecasino for a smoking break.

Section Top prizesSection top winners should pick up their travel mug

at the prize desk located next to the ACBL InformationDesk near the entrance to the convention area of theHilton. Take your mug to the concession stand to fill itup for a special price of $1.75.

With the East-West cards, we bid to 4«, maybe notas good a spot as 3NT by East, but normal enough.

South innocently led the ª10 (promising the jack)to dummy’s ªQ and North’s ª6. I drew three roundsof trumps and South pitched a club. Now came the ª8and what was South to do? If his partner had the ¨10and the ª9 instead of the ª7, covering the second heartwould not be a success. Declarer can then pitch hisclub loser on dummy’s fourth heart.

Accordingly the hapless South ducked the ª8, giv-ing me the pleasure of playing ªA–Q–5–3 facingª9–8 4 for three tricks and no losers. Of course, if Northhad the ̈ 10 the play would have broken even, but whenI guessed the ̈Q I had 12 tricks and virtually all thematchpoints.

Miller noted, “We had a nice game. Richard’s agood player, very solid.”

Miller’s opening lead of the ª3 ran to the 10, jackand king. Declarer played a low club to the king andcontinued with a club to the closed hand, inserting the10. Miller ducked. Declarer next unblocked dummy’sªQ, a revealing play to Miller since when Radtke fol-lowed with the 9, declarer was marked with an origi-nal heart holding of A–K–7–5. Also, declarer probablyheld the «A to justify his opening call. If that was true, declarer couldn’t hold either the «Q or the ©Q sincethat would give him enough points to have opened 1NT.It was possible that South held the «A and that de-clarer held both queens, but Radtke soon cleared upthe position for Miller.

When the third round of clubs was won perforceby Miller’s ace, he played the ©K and noting Radtke’sencouraging ©7, decided that the «A was with West.

Miller exited with the «6. Declarer played low fromdummy, and Radtke made the key play of a middlespade, allowing declarer to win the 10 but blockingaccess to the now-entryless dummy. This was the posi-tion:

Declarer cashed the long club and the ªA, Southpitching a spade and a diamond. After cashing the «A,declarer exited with a diamond, and Miller, confidentof the layout, went up with the ©A to crocodile-couphis partner’s queen, and claimed the remainder.

For holding declarer to eight tricks, North-Southearned 8.5 out of 11 matchpoints.

Note, however, that with careful play declarer couldhave scored a ninth trick. From the diagramed posi-tion, declarer should cash the good club and the «A,reducing North to red cards only. Now a low diamondfixes the defense. No matter whether North or Southwins the third round of diamonds, he’s endplayed —North in hearts, South in spades.

Calling the DirectorMartha McGhee, co-chair of the 1998 Orlando

NABC, was IN chairman at the 1992 NABC. This ar-ticle appeared in the Daily Bulletin at that tournament.

Call the who ...? The Director! It’s okay to call thedirector. If fact, if you don’t, you may lose your rightto call him later if you are damaged.

The director is the one who sold you an entry, theone who passed out the board, the one who passed outthe hand records and said, “Duplicate, please.” Thedirector is the one who organized the players and theboards so that everything runs smoothly at the righttime, the right speed and the right direction.

The director is the one you need help from if andwhen an irregularity happens at your table. The direc-tor gives rulings pertaining to the “Laws of DuplicateContract Bridge.”

In order for the conditions of the game to be fair, everyone has to follow the same rules. The director isfamiliar with these rules and is responsible for seeingthat they are correctly applied.

The director is also the one who calls the roundswhen it is time for you to meet your new opponents. The director puts the results of each board into the com-puter and posts the computer print-out of results aftereach session.

When you need a director, raise your hand and callout “Director, please” -- loudly enough for him to hearbut not so loudly that it disturbs the other players. Whenthe Director arrives at your table, he will listen to whathappened and explain to the players the ruling that per-tains to the irregularity.

Some rulings have several options so if you don’tunderstand them fully, don’t hesitate to ask for them tobe repeated.

Since the conditions at each table must be dupli-cated as much as possible, all the players must adhereto the same set of rules. The Director’s main objectiveis to make the game as fair as possible for all the play-ers involved, while ensuring that everyone has an en-joyable time.

Irregularities that may happen at your table forwhich you must call the director: a lead out of turn, aninsufficient bid, a revoke, a card missing from a hand,a bid or pass out of turn, failure to Alert an artificialbid, changes of call, disagreements of tricks won, claims with trumps outstanding or disputed claims, bidding errors, etc.

The Director is your friend. Do not hesitate to callhim or her. In fact, if you don’t call the Director, youmay have lost the right to call him later when you dis-cover you have been damaged.
