Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) November 2, 2014

November is traditionally a month in the Catholic Church in which we pray for and remember in a special way those who have died. Beginning yesterday with All Saints Day and today with All Souls Day, we recall those who have gone before us and pray that they may be united with Christ in heaven. For this purpose, we have special prayers each week at mass, and have a Book of Remembrance and prayer envelopes in the church. I encourage you to add the names of your loved ones, so that we can remember them in our prayers throughout the month.

Today, as we celebrate All Souls Day, we recall those who have died and pray for them. Through the sadness and the grief that comes from losing a parent, spouse, child, grandparent, or sister or brother, we are invited to trust and hope that they are now with God, that they are with the Church in heaven, watching over us and praying for us. Our first reading today from the Book of Wisdom says, “The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them… They are in peace.” We hope and pray that they are at rest. We hope and pray that they are in peace.

We have this hope because we have seen the faith and love with which our departed loved ones lived their lives. Our faith tells us that new life comes through death, that the resurrection follows from the cross. Our faith tells us that the death of Jesus is the beginning, it is not the end. We hope in the resurrection. St. Paul reminds us in the second reading, “If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.” By seeking to be faithful and loving in our lives, by following the example of Christ, we are hopeful that we too will live with him forever. As Jesus said in the Gospel, “This is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”

This faith, this faith that teaches us that death is not the end, but only the beginning, is what we hold on to. This faith leads us to hope and believe in the promise of Jesus, that all who believe in him will have eternal life, that death is not the end of the story, that we are reunited with God and with all our departed loved ones for all eternity.

As we pray today and throughout this month, let us ask the Lord to comfort us in our sorrow and grief, and bring us peace and happiness. We pray that we can follow the example of faith and love of our departed loved ones, who taught us so much. May our hearts be at peace in the hope and trust that God’s promises to them have been fulfilled.

An Invitation to Make a Difference for Our Soup Kitchen Guests and Carry Forward the Vincentian Spirit and Parish Mission

“Extend your mercy towards others, so that there can be no one in need whom you meet without helping. For what hope is there for us if God should withdraw His Mercy from us?” - St. Vincent de Paul

Did you wash your hands with soap today? Did you have toothpaste to put on your toothbrush? Things we may take for granted in our daily routines are often missing for those who are homeless or for those finding it difficult to make ends meet. In addition to serving meals six days a week at our soup kitchen, we distribute hygiene kits filled with travel-sized toiletry items to our soup kitchen guests every other month. The items we include in these kits help our guests make it through the days with dignity and a sense of self-worth. Many of you have already contributed to this effort by bringing back items from your hotel when you travel or by adding extra items to your shopping list and dropping them off. Now is your chance to see how these items are used by helping us put together kits that we can distribute during the colder months that are approaching. We are asking for 10 to 15 parishioners to join us to assemble hygiene kits after the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, November 9th. We will gather in the Ozanam Room in the Parish Center at 11:00 a.m. and, with an assembly line of helpers, we should be able to reach our goal of 300 kits by 1:00 p.m. If you are interested in lending a hand, please respond to Joyce Walsh at [email protected] or Nicole Janovick at [email protected] by Thursday, November 6th.

A Call for Volunteers in this Season for Giving Thanks!

We have a wonderful opportunity to advance and bring life to our parish mission through volunteering with our extended Vincentian family at the St. Vincent de Paul Center (Halsted & Webster) on November 15th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. (with

set-up and sorting nights on Nov. 13th & 14th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. / dinner provided). We are looking for 30 volunteers for the November 15th meal and event, as well as several others to help sort and set up on November 13th & 14th. This annual Homeless Outreach Lunch, which also benefits many of the men and women who come to our own parish soup kitchen and food pantry, offers us the chance to serve with our extended Vincentian family. As followers of the Vincentian mission our faith in God calls us to be good stewards of compassion, service and prayer. We are reminded from our mission statement that Christ calls us to serve in His name and see His face in everyone we meet. His words in Matthew 25:40 (which was so personally vital and important to St. Vincent de Paul in his own work and service) are central to this idea: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Come join with other parishioners in this special volunteer experience. The Homeless Luncheon services include a holiday meal, the distribution of winter clothes, sleeping bags and items to help our neediest community members get through a Chicago winter. Other services (podiatry, dental, etc.) are on site with referrals to additional off-site services. Thank you for your interest and response! Please contact Joyce Walsh at [email protected] or 773-528-6690, to get a full information sheet and registration link.

News & Notes

This Old Church

Join Great Books and God at 6:30pm on Tuesday, November 18th when we meet to discuss our eighth book, Fr. Michael Crosby’s Repair My House: Becoming a “Kindom” Catholic (Orbis Books, 2012).

“Repair my house” was the instruction that St. Francis of Assisi heard from a crucifix in a ruined chapel, inspiring his radical mission of church renewal. Today some say the Catholic Church confronts the need for a similar mission of repair and renewal.

In response, Fr. Michael Crosby sees a challenge to the Church to return to the basic message of Jesus Christ, a message that is supported, not contradicted, by advances in science and cosmology. Crosby envisions a new way of being Catholic and a set of practices that draws on the contemplative, compassionate, and life-giving spirit of Christ’s Kingdom… as he calls it, the “Kindom.”

Great Books and God is an “open enrollment” book club. Members choose the books we read and can join at any time. If you have questions, contact Dean at [email protected] or just drop in on Tuesday, November 18th in the Parish Center at 6:30 p.m. for discussion and light snacks. Bring the book. Bring a friend.

Reflection

On Death, Dying, and Obituaries © 2014 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

If I’ve written about this before, forgive me, but frankly, I can’t remember. Anyway, it’s the old joke about two guys speaking of death. The first guy says, “I’d give anything to know where I’m going to die.” The second guy perhaps finds this macabre because he says, “That’s crazy!” before adding, “Why would you possibly want to know where you’re going to die?” The first guy answers, “Because if I knew where I was going to die, I’d never go near the place.” I didn’t say it was a great joke, but I find it humorous, and more than a little thought-provoking. Yesterday was All Saints’ Day. Today is All Souls’ Day. Welcome to the beginning of the end of the year, a time for remembering that it’s the beginning of the end of us as well, which is borderline macabre in itself. But it’s also true: every day since our very first day brings us closer to our very last day. My friend Judy’s dad died in March. My friend Stanley died a few weeks later. My friend Bob died in June. My cousin Pat died a few weeks later. Huh? Perhaps because of these passings, or perhaps because I turned sixty this year, or perhaps because of the desperate news playing out every night on TV, death seems to be more in my mindset these days. But that’s not a bad thing, really... I heard a news story a few weeks back about some guy out east who wrote his own obituary. A funny one that went viral. I didn’t bother to look it up, but it got me to thinking about the self-authored “autobituary.” According to one online obit expert, “For some people writing their own obituary is an important part of coming to terms with the fact that their lives are coming to an end. For others, it’s a way to make sure they are remembered the way they want to be remembered.” While I’m not jumping feet first into writing my own, I understand the appeal/benefit — of doing so. As one blogger intends to post (with the help of a friend) upon her end, “If you’re reading this, I’m dead…” If you’re reading this, I hope I’m not. Dead, I mean. But since I put these words together each week a week or so before the column runs — to make deadline, ironically — I can’t say for sure I’ll last that long. None of us can, and that’s what makes All Saints and All Souls celebratory occasions. Today’s readings are chosen from the Masses of the Dead, and the suggested texts as printed in our Seasonal Missalettes define the celebration. From Ezekiel: “The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.” From Romans: “Brothers and sisters — Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” From Jesus himself: “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.” If I knew where I was going to die, I wouldn’t go near the place either. I’m in no hurry, you know? But somewhere, someday down the road is my end day. Yours, too. Then why are we celebrating? Because we have hope in what comes next. And hope doesn’t disappoint.

Reconciliation Saturday afternoon, 4:15-4:50 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room near the Sheffield entrance of the church, or you can call the Parish Center for an appointment.

Baptism Please contact Mary Jo Polark ([email protected]) to register for baptism preparation, which is held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. You may attend this class either before or after your child is born. Following preparation and after your child is born, please contact Mary Jo to schedule a baptism date. Baptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the month at 11:30 a.m., or during a regular Sunday mass. Baptism is not celebrated during the Lenten season.

Marriage Please contact Mary Jo Polark ([email protected]) to discuss the celebration of the sacrament of marriage here at St. Vincent’s, or concerning preparation and prenuptial matters if you are getting married in another parish. For baptized Catholics, marriage is celebrated within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent, one needs to be a registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. DePaul University faculty, staff, students, and alumni may also celebrate their wedding here, provided either the bride, groom, or both are Roman Catholic, registered at a parish and actively engaged in the practice of their faith. Weddings are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary Jo confirms all reservations for weddings.

Confirmation Catholic adults who would like to receive the sacrament of Confirmation are invited to contact Rebecca at [email protected]. Confirmation preparation sessions are held Sunday evenings February through May.

RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a program that prepares adults to receive the sacrament(s) of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion.
