"Dios" and French people refer to God as "Dieu", yet theyare all the same God. Interestingly, most Arab Jews andArab Christians refer to God as "Allah". And the word Allahin Arabic appears on the walls of many Arab churches.

10) The Islamic concept of God is that He is loving, merciful, and compassionate. But Islam also teaches thatHe is just and swift in punishment. Nevertheless, Allah oncesaid to Prophet Muhammad, "My mercy prevails over mywrath." Islam teaches a balance between fear and hope, protecting one from both complacency and despair.

11) Muslims believe that God has revealed 99 of His names(or attributes) in the Holy Qur'an. It is through these namesthat one can come to know the Creator. A few of thesenames are: the All-Merciful, the All-Knower, the Protector, the Provider, the Near, the First, the Last, the Hidden, andthe Source of Peace.

15) The Holy Qur'an was not authored by Muhammadpeace be upon him. It was authored by God, revealed toMuhammad peace be upon him, and written into physicalform by his companions.

16) The Holy Qur'an has no flaws or contradictions. Theoriginal Arabic scriptures have never been changed ortampered with.

17) Actual seventh century Qur'ans, complete and intact, are on display in museums in Turkey and many other placesaround the world.

18) If all Qur'ans in the world today were burned anddestroyed, the original Arabic would still remain. This isbecause millions of Muslims, called Hafiz (or "preservers")have memorized the text letter for letter from beginning toend, every word and syllable. Also,

1) "Islam" means "Peace through the submission to God".

2) "Muslim" means "anyone or anything that submits itselfto the will of God".

3) Islam is not a cult. Its followers number over 1.8 billionworldwide. Along with Judaism and Christianity, it isconsidered to be one of the three Abrahamic traditions.

4) There are five pillars of practice in Islam. These practicesmust be undertaken with the best of effort in order to beconsidered a true Muslim:

A) Shahadah - declaration of faith in the oneness of Godand that Muhammad is the last prophet of God. B) Formal obligatory prayer five times a day. C) Fasting during the daylight hours in the monthof Ramadan. D) Zakah - Poor-due "tax" - 2.5% of one's savings given tothe needy at the end of each year. chapters from the Qur'an are precisely recited from memoryby every Muslim in each of the five daily prayers.

19) Muslims do not believe in the concept of "vicariousatonement" but rather believe in the law of personalresponsibility. Islam teaches that each person is responsiblefor his or her own actions. On the Day of Judgment Muslimsbelieve that every person will be resurrected and will have toanswer to God for their every word, thought, and deed.Consequently, a practicing Muslim is always striving to berighteous.

20) Islam was not spread by the sword. It was spread by theword (Islamic teachings) and the example of its followers.Islam teaches that there is no compulsion in religion(the Holy Qur'an 2:256 and 10:99).

21) Terrorism, unjustified violence and the killing of innocentpeople are absolutely forbidden in Islam. Islam is a way oflife that is meant to bring peace to a society, whether itspeople are Muslim or not. The extreme actions of those whoclaim to be Muslim may be, among other things, a result oftheir ignorance or uncontrolled anger. Tyrant rulers andthose who commit acts of terrorism in the name of Islamare simply not following Islam. These people are individualswith their own views and political agendas. FanaticalMuslims are no more representative of the true Islamicteachings. Extremism and fanaticism is a problem that iscommon to all religious groups. Anyone who thinks that allMuslims are terrorists should remember that the famousboxer Muhammad Ali, perhaps the most celebrated personof our era, is a practicing Muslim.

22) The word "jihad" does not mean "holy war". Instead, itmeans the inner struggle that one endures in trying tosubmit their will to the will of God. Some Muslims may saythey are going for "jihad" when fighting in a war to defendthemselves or their fellow Muslims, but they only say thisbecause they are conceding that it will be a tremendousstruggle. But there are many other forms of jihad which aremore relevant to the everyday life of a Muslim such as thestruggles against laziness, arrogance, stinginess, or thestruggle against a tyrant ruler or against the temptation ofSatan, or against one's own ego, etc.

23) Women are not oppressed in Islam. Any Muslim manthat oppresses a woman is not following Islam. Among themany teachings of Prophet Muhammad that protected therights and dignity of women is his saying, "...the best amongyou are those who treat their wives well." (Tirmidhi)

24) Islam grants women numerous rights in the home and insociety. Among them are the right to earn money, to financialsupport, to an education, to an inheritance, to being treatedkindly, to vote, to a dowry, to keep their maiden name,

to worship in a mosque, etc., etc.

25) Muslim women wear the head-covering (hijab) in fulfilment of God's decree to dress modestly. From a practical standpoint, it serves to identify one as attempting to follow God in daily life and, therefore, protects womenfrom unwanted advances from men. This type of modestdress has been worn by righteous women throughout history.Prominent examples are traditional Catholic Nuns, MotherTeresa and the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus.

26) Arranged marriages are allowed in Islam but are notrequired. Whereas "forced" marriages, usually stemmingfrom cultural practice, are forbidden. Divorce is permissible, however, reconciliation is what is most encouraged. But ifthere are irreconcilable differences then Islam permits afair and just divorce.

27) Islam is a religion for all races and enjoins the worshipof the one unseen God who, orthodox Muslims believe, never took human form. Islam teaches equality amongst allthe races (Holy Qur'an 49:13).

28) All Muslims are not Arabs. Islam is a universal religionand way of life which includes followers from all races ofpeople. There are Muslims in and from virtually everycountry in the world. Arabs only constitute about 20% ofMuslims worldwide. Indonesia has the largest concentrationof Muslims with over 120 million.

29) In the five daily prayers, Muslims face the Kaaba in Mecca, Arabia. It is a cube-shaped stone structure that was originally built by Prophet Adam and later rebuilt by Prophet Abraham. Muslims believe that the Kaaba wasthe first house of worship on Earth dedicated to the worshipof one God. Muslims do not worship the Kaaba. It serves asa central focal point for Muslims around the world, unifyingthem in worship and symbolizing their common belief, spiritual focus and direction. Interestingly, the inside of theKaaba is empty.

30) The hajj is a simultaneous pilgrimage to the Kaabamade by millions of Muslims each year. It is performed tocommemorate the struggles of Abraham, Ishmael andHagar in submitting their wills to God

Allah's Miracles in the Holy Quran – by Harun Yahya

He Who created the seven heavens in layers. You will notfind any flaw in the creation of the All-Merciful. Lookagain-do you see any gaps? Then look again and again.Your sight will return to you dazzled and exhausted!(Qur'an, 67:3-4)

He to Whom the kingdom of the heavens and the earthbelongs. He does not have a son and He has no partner inthe Kingdom. He created everything and determined it mostexactly. (Qur'an, 25:2)

The scientific discoveries of the 20th century that followedswiftly, one after the other, in the fields of astrophysics andbiology have proved that life and the universe were created. As the theses of Darwinism collapsed, the Big Bang theoryhas shown that the universe was created from nothing.Discoveries have revealed that there is a great design andfine-tuning in the material world and this has categoricallydemonstrated the groundless nature of the claims ofmaterialism.

Considering the conditions necessary for life, we see thatonly the Earth meets these particular conditions. For anenvironment suitable for life, there are innumerableconditions taking place simultaneously and unceasingly allaround us. There are some hundred billion galaxies, eachwith-on average-a hundred billion stars. In all the galaxies, there are perhaps as many planets as stars. In the face ofsuch overpowering numbers, one can better comprehend thesignificance of the formation of such an exceptionalenvironment on the Earth.

From the force of the Big Bang explosion to the physicalvalues of atoms, from the levels of the four basic forces to thechemical processes in the stars, from the type of light emittedby the Sun to the level of viscosity of water, from the distanceof the Moon to the Earth to the level of gases in theatmosphere, from the Earth's distance from the Sun to itsangle of tilt to its orbit, and from the speed at which theEarth revolves around its own axis to the functions of the

oceans and mountains on the Earth: every single detail isideally suited to our lives. Today, the world of sciencedescribes these features by means of the concepts of the"Anthropic Principle" and "Fine-Tuning." These conceptssummarise the way that the universe is not an aimless, uncontrolled, chance collection of matter but that it has apurpose directed towards human life and has been designedwith the greatest precision.

Attention is drawn in the above verses to the measure andharmony in Allah's creation. The word "taqdeer," meaning"to design, measure, create by measuring," is employed inQur'anic verses such as Surat al-Furqan . The word "tibaaq," meaning "in harmony," is used in Surat al-Mulk andSurah Nuh. Furthermore, Allah also reveals in Surat al-Mulkwith the word "tafaawut," meaning "disagreement, violation,non-conformity, disorder, opposite," that those who seekdisharmony will fail to find it.

The term "fine-tuning," which began to be used towards theend of the 20th century, represents this truth revealed in theverses. Over the last quarter-century or so, a great manyscientists, intellectuals and writers have shown that theuniverse is not a collection of coincidences. On the contrary,it has an extraordinary design and order ideally suited tohuman life in its every detail. Many features in the universeclearly show that the universe has been specially designed tosupport life. The physicist Dr. Karl Giberson expresses thisfact thus: In the 1960s, some physicists observed that ouruniverse appears to have been fine-tuned for the existence ofhuman life.

The British astrophysicist Professor George F. Ellis refers tothis fine-tuning in these terms: Amazing fine tuning occursin the laws that make this [complexity] possible. Realizationof the complexity of what is accomplished makes it verydifficult not to use the word "miraculous" without taking astand as to the ontological status of the word.

The Holy Qur'an is the highest authority in Islam. It containsthe exact words of God as revealed to Prophet Muhammad (P)and recorded by his companions. In applying the Qur'anicteachings to everyday life, Muslims rely upon the sunnah(sayings and actions) of the Prophet (P). This sunnah is aconcrete implementation, a tangible form, and the actualembodiment of the will of God in the form of Muhammad'sdeeds. They were recorded in what are called ahadith(pieces of news, stories, or reports).

Birmingham Faith Leaders GroupStatement by the Birmingham Faith Leaders' Group

on the Balance of Freedom and Responsibility in Society

Over recent weeks, both nationally and internationally,

we have witnessed the increased incidence of disrespect

for religious belief. The impact of such intolerance is

devastating both in terms of public disorder around the

world as well as for the wellbeing of communities and their

ability to live in harmony with one another and value the

beliefs of others.

The origins of the Birmingham Faith Leaders' Group lie in

the response to acts of intolerance perpetrated by a minority,

upon Muslims and some other religious communities in the

immediate aftermath of 9/11. As leaders of various religious

communities in the city of Birmingham came together in

2001 to stand with the local Muslim community against

bigotry, ignorance and hatred, they defined the fundamental

principle that an attack on any faith is an attack on all faiths.

We now reject anything which seeks to mock or denigrate

religious beliefs. Recent examples of the publication of

cartoons seeking to ridicule Islam and the release of a film

mocking the Muslim faith are felt by all of us to be a deep

insult to religious faith itself. We condemn the production of

such material and we particularly question those

organisations prepared to publish and distribute it. They are

guilty of the abuse of freedoms which we all hold dear in this

country.

With freedom comes responsibility. If we do not understand

that then we risk damaging and losing the very freedoms we

value so highly. Just because there is freedom of the press

and media, which makes it possible for them to publish

damaging and hurtful material about a religion, does not

make it right or justifiable to do so.

Freedom of expression must have limits. As mature people

living in a mature society those limits should grow out of

shared values and responsibility. Unfortunately, aspects of

the media here and abroad have shown themselves to be

incapable of exercising moral standards and demonstrating

responsible behaviour. An overriding principle should be

that of respect for one another, for their feelings and their

well-being and for their beliefs. We call on people

throughout this city and beyond to demand such principles

in the media and throughout the institutions of public life.

In the spirit of religious faith itself, we also call on those

who feel their faith has been insulted to exercise restraint.

We believe a response which leads to violence and loss of life

cannot be justified and is, in itself, counter to the values of

all faiths.
