Stewardship of God’s Earth By Jim Tocko

The call process has gotten off to a great start. I am encouraged by the enthusiasm of the members of the Transition Team who are formulating the Ministry Site Profile for our next pastor. Congregational meetings will be held to solicit your input. Accompanying the call process is another challenge; before the call process can be completed, we need to eliminate the bank debt and build a reserve fund to offset expected expenses incurred in the call process, including moving expenses for the new pastor. I know we can rise up to the challenge. Continue to give generously in your offerings. I trust we can do this if we all accept the challenge. Jim T.

YOU MIGHT BE A LUTHERAN IF...at the close of a memo it states “Peace be with you” and you respond “and also with you.” YOU MIGHT BE A LUTHERAN IF...the pastor skips the last hymn to make sure church lasts exactly 60 minutes.

From the Council President

A Message from Pastor Paul

What a privilege and joy to again serve this people! For the last years I have been serving apart from you. Amazingly the synod has invited me to share in your live and mission as an interim Pastor. Immanuel closes one chapter of its life - as great as it has been- and move into a new chapter. An advantage I have over another interim is that I can look over the congregation on Sunday morning and pretty much know who is present and who is not. As I do, I realize that all present and all absent love this church and have some pride in being part of it. When I do not see you present, I know it is not out of a lack of love. Sometimes absence is due to taking the life and mission of this church for granted. Immanuel has been strong and dependable for over 100 years and the sense among some is that it will always be there for the community and membership. Of course, a church is not a building, it is a people. Over the years the faithfulness of the people has made it strong. When we all share in the joy, comfort and celebration, we are the church solid together for our neighbor. The saints of old through the years have made this church strong and it is the saints of today (you) who continue to make it so. My role among you is to be your pastor in all respects. I am part time, but always available. I also serve as an interim. It means that I together with an excellent transition team, will look at the life of the church in the recent past - warts and all. Also we dream together into the future. Each of has our personal walk with the Lord as we care about our neighbors. The question is: How do we affirm that ministry and how do we settle on somethings we might do together as a congregation? Key to this is forthright and honest conversation among as many of us as choose to contribute to the effort. Of course the goal of this effort is to consider candidates for Pastoral ministry. On the way the only way in which we can choose one who is able to walk with us in our life together and mission is that we reflect on our common mission. The transition team will offer opportunities for conversation and perhaps some ways to gather opinions. Oh we are going to have a good time with this!

WELCA

Dear Friends in Christ, I hope you have signed up for this year's Chanhassen's show, the musical "Camelot". The date is Wednes-day, November 2; and the cost is $87.00, including the bus ride, a snack, and dinner. You will need to bring some extra money for supper at Culver's, as we stop there on the way home. We leave at 7am sharp, from in front of the church. Karen Franson just gave me the names of the entertainers for the December WELCA Christmas Luncheon! On Wednesday, December 7 @ 11am, WELCA will have their Christmas 2016 Luncheon, with Gert and the Polka Cheers from the Overall Kampa Band. Gert Wilzciek plays the Concertina and Leroy Marsolek plays the banjo. Sign-up sheets will appear on the Church Welcome Table at the Entrance Doors soon. In August, WELCA's Board decided to have an Executive Committee, next year, instead of a Presi-dent, since no one has come forward to serve as President. The 2017 Executive Committee is: Secretary: Carolyn Boehne; Treasurer: Jean Herman; Discipleship: Karen Franson; Stewardship: Carolyn Boehne I will be calling people soon to begin the process of rotating Serving Group Chairs. Please prayerfully con-sider being open to what is now a 2 year term, in order to be fair for all. Thank you, to Serving Groups 7 and 11, who served at Pastor Ken and Family's Farewell Brunch, in Sep-tember. They assisted Michelle Peaslee, who was in charge of the event. WELCA also purchased and served a delicious cake, and presented Mandi Taylor with a beautiful blue Pashima shawl, with WELCA's logo, as a memento. The Official Count for Apple Pies is in! We made a total of 353 pies. As of 10-5-16, we had a money count of $2367.00, and still had 44 pies to pick up. As of Sunday, 10-16, there were 11 pies left for sale in the freezer. Thank you to all the hardworking people, without whom this fundraiser could not have happened: Barb/Dan Adams, Sue Anderson, Jean Amundson, Colleen/Dave Berge, Jane Bergerson, Helen Beebe, Carolyn Boehne, Janet Cole, Ruth Eide, Judy Foss, Eric/Karen Frenson, Ruth Gilbertson, Ruth Gullicksrud, Howard/Ramona Hanson, Kay Hardy, Jean Herman, Dorothy Hulberg, Lois Hulberg, George/Lois Johnson, Ann/Ralph Kisor, Florine Koxline, Jean Nelson, RonnetteMatt Nelson, Edith Olson, Phyllis Olson-Skovbroton, Patty Runkel, Bob/Lyn Schlink, Joyce Schmidt, Diane Thronson, Marion Thronson, Dennis/Maxine Ulberg, Tom Wagner. As you can see, many hands make light work; and this is truly an all-around church event! Thank you to Thrivant for their generous donation and to Robbe's for the wonderful meat and cheese platter. Thank you also, to Serving Groups 12 & 13 for feeding us Tuesday and Wednesday! Finally, the Board and I have noticed that, there are many cake pans and bowls going unclaimed from the many funerals and other serving events over the last year. Please go down to the kitchen to find your lost kitchenware, because, we will be cleaning the kitchen in the near future, and are looking at having a rum-mage sale for orphan pans and bowls. Yours in Christ, Sara Heck ILC WELCA President

GREETINGS FROM YOUR ILC RUTH CHAPTER DOK AND REBEKAH AND ESTHER JDOK, Welcome to the new 2016-17 DOK/JDOK Season! This year brings changes and new adventures. We were sad to see Directress Mandi move to Maryland, along with Junior Daughters McKenna and Maddi. Directress Janet is changing to an advisory/support role, but she will continue to support us with prayer and delicious food! However, Directress Sara is remaining, and has many new ideas to share. We also look forward to adding new Juniors and new senior Daughters to our circle of friends. This year we have a theme of "The Good Shepherd." We will be doing and learning many things based on the 23rd Psalm, including cooking up a Good Shepherd Tea Party, weaving a Prayer Loom, playing sheep games, making "stained glass" windows, and prayer beads, knitting prayer shawls or lap covers for the nursing home; having our 3rd Annual Lock-In; and some of us will travel to Michigan in April, to the Province 5 Retreat! On October 16, at the 9am Service, we celebrate our newest Members-in-Waiting, Kallie Walz and Madison Balk, with a Candlelight Service. This Service signifies their intention to begin the 3 month preparation period to be admitted to Junior Membership in the Order of the Daughters of the King. In the 3 meetings we had in September & October, we listed our annual goals, played "lost sheep" games, taken the National DOK Survey, practiced making prayer beads, and our Prayer List, made gifts with with Char Meyers for the Nursing Home & Shut-ins, chosen & started to donate toward mosquito nets with the ELCA Good Gifts Program, and had a "Goodbye Party" for the Taylor "Daughters". JDOK helped the senior DOK with coffee hour on October 30. The senior Daughters met on Sept. 17, for their regular meeting. Our Bible Study was a continuation of the book "Creating a Life With God," by Daniel Wolpert. We tried the prayer practice of group journaling, which was quite enlightening! We decided to change our monthly meetings to a quarterly Retreat format, where we can meet all day, on a Saturday, either at the Super 8 in Osseo, and/or at Camp Lutherwood or another Retreat Center. This will begin November 19, 2016, from 12-4pm @ the Osseo Super 8. (Yes, the last hour will be held in the jacuzzi!!) Look for information in the church bulletin. You can call the Church Office to sign up: (715) 695-3511 or Sara Heck (715) 695-3299 We will begin shut-in home visitations soon. We also decided that the DOK/JDOK will be serving coffee on Sun. Oct. 30. If you are interested in a Vocation of Prayer, Service, and Evangelism, please call Sara Heck for more information: (715) 695-3229 fHs Sara Heck President, Ruth Chapter DOK Directress, Rebekah and Esther JDOK

The Palliative Care Service of HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital is seeking your help. Because we serve patients from all over Northwest and West Central Wisconsin, we invite you to express your good wishes for patients from your community and to show your generosity by participating in our Blanket Project. It is a wonderful service project and a great way to give back to the community; by making (or buying) blankets to donate to dying patients. Patients who have had a very lengthy and difficult hospital stay or who are imminently dying are given a donated blanket. The blanket is theirs to keep and it either goes home with the patient at discharge or with the family after the patient’s death as a keepsake. Our patients and families treasure their blanket because it makes the hospital room feel a little more like home. Additionally, through your generosity, it reminds the patient and family that other people are thinking of them during this very difficult time. These donated blankets are distributed throughout the year and, for this reason, the Palliative Care Service is always in need of blankets. Plese think about participating in this service project directed toward patients and their families during a very difficult time. Be creative; purchase or make a beautiful blanket you’ll be proud to give! Twin-size blankets work well for hospitalized patients because the size covers the hospital bed (approx. 60” wide by 72” long). Novelty prints are great, but please avoid juvenile prints. Gender-neutral prints are also very appreciated. We thank you for your generosity and your willingness to participate in this important program. If you have questions, please contact the Palliative Care Department at 715-717-4543. Specifics of blanket construction and instructions regarding blanket drop off are located in the church office. Please see Michelle.

Luther Park Lock-in at Immanuel Lutheran Church We are planning a Luther Park Youth Lock-in for November 11 (Friday). Luther Park counsellors will be coming to Immanuel for an evening of fun activities for youth in 6th - 12th grade. The event starts at 6 p.m. with dinner and ends at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast. Attendees must be picked up by 9 a.m. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the Narthex, or you may call Michelle in the church office; 715-695-3511.

At 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, originally scheduled for November 20, the youth will be assembling Thanksgiving baskets for families in need in the Eleva-Strum school district as one of their service projects (thank you, Sara, for offering the assistance of the Junior Daughters). Donations of the following items would be greatly appreciated: Green Beans or Corn, boxes or bags of Stuffing mix, 5 pound bags of potatoes, cans of Cranberry Sauce, and cans of Turkey Gravy. A Thrivent Action Team Grant has been awarded to purchase Turkeys for the project. We will be serving approximately 25 families.

The Endowment Fund, being an important part of our congregation’s ministry, encourages you to consider gifts or memorials and to consider a bequest in your estate planning.

Applications are being accepted now through December 25 and are available in the church office.

National Adoption Month - Lutheran Social Services

November is National Adoption Month, a month set aside to raise awareness about the adoption of children and youth. Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, Inc (LSS) is joining thousands of individuals, government agencies and child advocacy organizations across the nation in promoting National Adoption Month. National Adoption Month is cause for celebration - a journey to remember, appreciate, and announce the joy adoption can bring to families. Each family is unique, so is their inspiration for adoption. The inspiration for many families is the longing to care for a child. For children, their inspiration is to have a forever family. Please join LSS by advocating for the 134 million children in need of homes - help a child find a forever family. Each LSS adoption office hosts adoption information sessions. The 2017 schedule for the Eau Claire office is listed below. You are encouraged and welcome to attend to meet our staff and ask questions about adoption.

LSS ADOPTION ORIENTATION MEETINGS Eau Claire Office

1320 W Clairemont Avenue; Suite 100 Eau Claire, WI 54701 www.lssadopt.org

Adoption social workers will provide an introduction into LSS Adoption Services and describe each of the programs: including eligibility, requirements, and fees. You will walk away with a wealth of information and we will be available to answer all of your questions. You need only attend one meeting. There is no charge for attending this meeting, but pre-registration is required. To register, please contact Michelle Lenz at 715-552-2450.

January 24, 2017: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. March 14, 2017: 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. May 2, 2017: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. June 6, 2017: 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

August 9, 2017: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. October 19, 2017: 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

If you are unable to attend, please contact: Connie Usiak for International Adoption at 715-552-2477 or Nikki Brooks for Domestic Adoption at 715-552-2464 to set up an appointment to discuss adoption services. 10 Ways to Celebrate Nations Adoption Month

1. Become a guest blogger at LSS or ask your child to blog about adoption. 2. Read adoption specific books or watch a movie with an adoption theme. Discuss if adoption is

portrayed in a positive or negative light. 3. Nominate a family for Family Spotlight in the LSS Adoption Newsletter - submit your family for

consideration. 4. Become a fan on www.facebook.com/lssadopt and spread the word about adoption. 5. Create a new family tradition - invite someone to your home who isn’t able to celebrate

Thanksgiving with their family. 6. Create a Lifebook celebrating adoption and your family. 7. Encourage schools, churches, community to speak about adoption. Volunteer to speak or

arrange for LSS to speak or present on adoption. 8. Say a prayer and light a candle for children who are still waiting for their Forever Family. 9. Visit www.changealife.today to see what a difference your donation can make. 10. Be thankful! Share what you are thankful for and spend time with family.
