MISSION STATEMENT Building Strong Relationships in Christ,

And Making Him Known to All.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine

and puts them into practice is like a wise man who

built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the

streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that

house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation

on the rock.” (Mt. 7:24-25)

If you live in Iowa you would try not to buy a house in

a flood plain. You would also put a sump pump in

your basement. We do the best we can to avoid having

water in our basements. That has been a difficult job

these last days as the rain has continued to fall and has

saturated the ground.

How do we prepare for the storms of life that often

come unexpectedly? We make sure that our

foundation and purpose for life is built solidly on the

promises of God that we find in the scriptures. If we

trust God to meet our needs, He promises to give us

peace and stability in the midst of the winds that blow

through our lives. I trust that your faith will be built

upon the solid rock of ages, our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Ask him to strengthen your faith today.

This summer why not make an effort to be in church

each week. There are some very special worship times

planned that, we pray, will enhance your relationship

with Christ and give you power to face the

uncertainties of life. Pastor Anenson

our church. The June study will be

Tuesday, June 18 at 2 P.M. in the Social

Hall. Everyone is welcome. Bring your Bible!

Special Congregational Meeting

A Special Congregational Meeting will be held

Sunday, June 2, following the 9:30 A.M. worship

service to vote on the recommendation of the

church council to restore to the Immanuel Staff a

full time person for the position of Youth and

Education Ministry Coordinator. (Each member

household should have received a letter concerning

this meeting and the details of this position. Let the

church office know if you did not get one. All

confirmed members are encouraged to attend this

meeting.)

115th Anniversary Directory Our new pictorial directory has arrived! All those who

had their picture in the directory will get a free copy. Other

members are welcome to purchase a directory for $5. The

directory may be picked up following worship or by stopping

at the church office during office hours.

Update on Electrical Upgrade

Our electrical service has been transferred to our

new system. All that is left to do is install the new

fixtures for the lights above the altar and the lights

shining on the stained glass window. About $15,000 is

still needed to completely pay for this upgrade. Thanks

to all of you who have contributed to the electrical

upgrade fund.

Open House Bridal Shower

An open house shower is planned

for Natalie Miller, bride-to-be of Tyler

Whipple, on Sunday, June 2 at 2 P.M.

in the Immanuel Lutheran Church

social hall. Please consider this your

invitation to celebrate. Those attending are asked to

bring or wear something from their wedding.

Seasoned Souls

Steve and Miriam Skartvedt will be hosting our

next Seasoned Souls gathering on Saturday, June 29 at

5:30 P.M. Their address is 1039 8th Street in Story

City. (They live right across the street from the North

Park.) Meat, table service and drink will be provided.

a salad to share. If your last name begins with letters

M-Z, please bring a dessert. A sign-up sheet will be

posted closer to the date. Any questions, please contact

Corine Nordeen at 733.4089 or Jaynee Christian at

733.2710. All Seasoned Souls are welcome!

We want to thank all those who have served as volunteers in any

way during this past school year. We are thankful for those who

worked with our youth—as teachers of Sunday School, Trinity, or

Confirmation classes or as helpers with any of our youth groups, or

youth choirs.

Thank you also to those who have served as ushers, greeters,

readers, and nursery attendants this past year.

We appreciate all those who have helped in the church office to

put together bulletins, newsletters, and other special mailings.

A special thanks to all choir members and to those who provide special music for our worship services,

those who prepare communion, those who help with small work projects around the church, such as repairs,

planting and maintaining flower and bushes, those who work in the church library, those who put up

banners and change paraments, and those who are always so willing to serve or prepare food for funerals,

coffee fellowship, or for other gatherings.

Thank you to those who serve in leadership, such as church council members, church boards and

committee members, the Women’s Ministry Group, Stephen Ministers, quilters and all those others who

volunteer in other ways.

We are glad you are using your God-given talents in wonderful ways.

A Summer Tour Through Galatians Paul began his letter by saying, “you foolish

Galatians.” Why is Paul so upset? It seems his

Christian friends in Galatia were listening to the

wrong voices and the core message of the Gospel

was being compromised.

Are Paul’s concerns still relevant in our culture

today? What are the core beliefs he calls us to hold

on to?

The pastors will explore this letter in a new

sermon series in the coming weeks. The schedule

is below. It may be helpful to read each chapter

during the week before it is dealt with in the

sermon. You won’t want to miss any of these

messages.

June 2 – Chapter 1

June 9 – Chapter 2

June 16 – Chapter 3

June 23 – Chapter 4

June 30 – Chapter 5

July 7 – Chapter 6

Other special services this summer include:

June 16 - Day Camp kids and Riverside Staff

share songs

July 14 - Our 115th Anniversary Celebration

July 28 - Tim & Paula Tjernagel, our

missionaries in Spain, will be with us

August 18 - The “Pride of Iowa” Barbershop

Chorus will present, “A Sermon in

Song.”

"There are many little ways to enlarge your

child's world. Love of books is the best of

all." ~ Jacqueline Kennedy

The summer months are upon us. The children

are home from school and the days are a little

more relaxed and unscheduled. This is a good

time to stop by the Church Library, with your

children, and find a good book to read aloud

together or to have them read to you to keep up

the skills they learned at school.

Find a book of children’s activities in the

649.1 section, and have some fun together. Find

a DVD to watch with your children for a Mom

(Dad) & Me time or a Family Movie Night Event.

ON THE CHILDREN'S BOOK SHELVES

Wait Until Then by Randy Alcorn – A picture

book about Heaven. It’s a heartwarming story

that indirectly answers childlike questions about

heaven in story form.

Ronnie Wilson’s Gift by Francis Chan –

When Ronnie Wilson learns of Jesus’ sacrifice,

he wants to give Jesus a gift too. But how can

he get it to heaven? A story about giving,

loving, sharing and being thankful.

The Couch Potato Caper by Doug Peterson –

The Veggie Detectives, Bob and Larry, are in

search of Laura Carrot who has been taken

prisoner by the “Couch Potatoes.” The story

helps kids learn that laziness doesn’t pay. We

have a number of books in the Veggie Town

Values series: lessons on serving others, giving,

perseverance, patience, being responsible,

making peace, and being generous.

The Incredible Discovery of Lindsey Renee by Joni Eareckson Tada – This story is a

reminder that God does great things with our

small sacrifices.

Thank You for this Day by Debbie O’Neal

Trafton – Book contains action prayers, songs

and blessings for every day.

You will find many more great reads on the

children’s bookshelves. Check it out! DVDs for

children are on the desk in the library.

Have a GREAT summer reading, celebrating and

enjoying your family.

planned as they go to HOPE Ministries in Des Moines.

We have a volunteer adult interested in doing a summer program

for the middle school students—titled “Unplugged.” Volunteers

are needed.

Discussion was held on the process of exploring the possibility of

restoring a full-time youth ministries position at Immanuel. To

date, two congregational forums have been held with one forum

remaining on May 5th. Comments received during the forums have

been positive in regard to the need for the fulltime position to be

restored with many thoughtful questions related to how to

advertise the position, desired education and experience,

compensation, and how this staff position would work in

conjunction with the current committee structure and Immanuel

staff. The Youth Board agreed to request that the Church Council

schedule a date for a congregational vote on the issue.

Michelle Becker provided the Youth Board members with

Immanuel Day Camp

A Christ-centered, high energy, devoted Riverside staff will once again lead

Day Camp at Immanuel June 10-13. Day Camp is a great way for youth to

experience God through Bible studies, music, recreation and crafts. The theme

for the week is “REMEDY” based on 1 John 4:10. Day Camp is for kids

entering grades 1st through 6th grade. It goes from 9-2 each day. Registration

forms were handed out during Sunday School. They are also available in the

church office. Day Camp is open to any kids in the community so encourage

your son or daughter to bring a friend! Please return registration forms to the church office by

Monday, June 3. This gives us an approximate count to plan for activities and classes. You

may still register children at the start of Day Camp on June 10.

A preschool class for children ages 3-5, who have not attended kindergarten also is being

offered. We do ask that your child be potty-trained. The preschool program runs from 9-11:30

on the same dates as Day Camp and includes a curriculum with the same theme.

There are many ways for you to serve the Lord and get involved to make sure Day Camp is a

great success! We still are in need of host families for our Riverside staff, meal providers for

the Riverside staff, snack providers, and helpers, high school age and above.

If you can help in anyway, please contact:
