From the Pastor. . .

THE END IS NEAR! (of my Doctor of Ministry program)

As many of you know, I am nearing completion

of a Doctor of Ministry degree through Western

Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. This has

been an eight-year journey for me; I started the

program when we lived in Michigan, and have

gradually woven elements of it into the life of our

congregation and community. Several of you were

part of Spiritual Family Trees small groups who

learned how to draw and share with others the full

story of your faith journey. Others came to the

Family Systems workshop I led shortly after

coming here. Many more of you participated in the

Sketching Our Story events and interviews that led

to my writing of a Missional Biography of our

congregation. Last summer, several people from the

wider community came together for a six week

Storyliving group that explored a Faith-in-Action

process (Awareness / Analysis / Action) to ask

“What story is God telling in Story City, and how

can we join in?” That experience was the heart of

my final project, Storyliving: A Faith-in-Action

Experiment in Cultivating a Community’s

Missional Imagination. On May 1st, I will go to

Michigan to defend and present my project. I ask

for your prayers as I near the end of this endeavor.

I look forward to sharing more about it with you;

the entire journey has been enriching for me and for

others who have been part of it. Thanks for all your

support and encouragement!

Messiah in the Passover 1:00 p.m. on Palm Sunday, April 9th

Messiah in the Passover is a vivid and exciting demonstration showing how Jesus fulfilled the ancient feast of Passover. It will be presented by Trevor Rubenstein with Good News for Israel, now partnering with Chosen People Ministries. CPM is an over one hundred-year-old mission that was founded in 1894 by Leopold Cohn, a Hungarian rabbi who came to believe that Jesus is the Messiah promised in the Hebrew Scriptures. From humble beginnings in Brooklyn, New York, Chosen People Ministries has grown into a worldwide ministry.

Messiah in the Passover begins with the traditional Passover Seder table—complete with all the elements of this important Jewish celebration. The speaker will explain

the symbolic meanings of the various items of the Passover feast and highlight their relationship to the Last Supper that Jesus celebrated with his disciples, giving special

emphasis on the redemptive significance of the crucifixion.

Messiah in the Passover gives the Christian community insight into Jewish traditions so that the Jewish roots of Christianity can be better understood. This program also

helps the Jewish and Christian communities understand their common heritage. The presentation is open to the public.

A freewill offering will be received for Chosen People Ministries.

Immanuel Transition Team Update

As we move into April and the last couple weeks of Lent, the CAT has now been up and running for about 2 weeks! As you know, we have been working with Holy Cow! Consulting to help us plan our future. We launched the

Congregation Assessment Tool (CAT) on March 20 as our first step, to provide to us a picture of who we are as a church and what directions are most important for our future. Our plan is to keep the CAT open until

approximately April 12 – if you have already gone online and completed the CAT, THANK YOU! If you have picked up a paper copy of the CAT from the church, THANK YOU and please complete the assessment survey as soon as

possible and return it to the church so that your information can be included in the final results. And at any time, please feel free to provide any member of the Transition Team with your comments about the CAT and its

questions. If you haven’t completed the CAT yet, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible.

After the CAT is closed to data entry around the middle of this month, Holy Cow! Consulting will compile the results and prepare a Vital Signs report for Immanuel. This report will provide key indicators of our congregational

health along with areas of challenge and potential growth. It will help us to understand the range of views that exist here at Immanuel and the possibilities, willingness, capacity and energy for moving our ministry into the

future. A consultant with Holy Cow! Consulting will meet with the Transition Team and members of the Church Council later in April, to lead us through and interpret for us the results. Later this spring/early summer, the

Transition Team and Council will present the CAT results to you as congregation members. From this first step, the Transition Team will move on to a process of what we are calling informal assessments. We will meet with as many of you as possible, through small group discussions, one-on-one meetings and other

opportunities, to allow you to provide to us more ideas, narrative and commentary of your personal goals for the future missions and changes at Immanuel. So, please keep an eye out for these upcoming informal gatherings, and

continue to pray about this important time in Immanuel’s life!

Church & Community Announcements

All women are invited to join a weekly Bible Study each Wednesday morning in the church library from 9 to 10 A.M.

All Men of Immanuel are invited to meet each Saturday morning from 8 to 9 A.M. in the Social Hall for an informal Bible Study.

Immanuel Women’s Ministry Quilt Tying Work Day will be Thursday,

April 13, from 9 A.M. to noon.

Come join us for a morning of fun, work, fellowship, food, and service to others. You are also invited to bring something to share for coffee break.

We hope you can make it! No experience needed.

Prayer Ministry Team: Do you have a heart for praying with people for their needs? Af-ter worship on April 2nd, anyone interested in forming a prayer ministry team is invited to meet in the chapel for planning and prayer about this possibility.

Bethany Life’s annual Palm Sunday Brunch, Bake Sale & Craft Sale is being held on Sunday, April 9th, from 10 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Chef Chris will be on hand with his famous streusel coffee cake and ham & cheese omelets, with coffee, water and milk, all for a Free Will offering. Bethany Volunteers will be selling one of a kind crafts and homemade baked treats. Come to the Households of Bethany at 212 Lafayette Ave. in Story City and support our mission while doing a bit of shopping and enjoying a great brunch! Those also willing to donate some baked goods should bring them to the main desk at the Households of Bethany (formerly Bethany Manor) and drop them off on Saturday, April 8th.

A message from our Stephen Ministers: An important theme of the Lenten season is the humanity of Christ. In Jesus, God became human and fully experienced the wide range of emotions we all encounter in life. Jesus experienced times of loneliness, sadness, hurt, anger, disappointment, grief, and abandonment. That is part of being human. Another part of being human is needing help from each other. God never intended us to be completely self-sufficient. Part of God’s plan is for each of us to turn to others for help when we need it. So when you are experiencing difficult times, don’t struggle alone. Our Stephen Ministers will walk with you, listen to you, encourage you, pray with you, and provide confidential one-to-one care to help you through tough times. Stephen Ministers can bring the love of Jesus back into your life.

Meal Train: If you know any friends or family in need of meals following births, deaths, illnesses, or surgeries, please contact Sarah Jensen (suttonsbay1@yahoo.com) or the church office. Sarah will help organize the providing of meals using the Meal Train website and will notify the congregation allowing you to sign up for times to provide meals for those in their time of need. A Story City’s Writers Group will meet Friday, April 21 in Immanuel’s library. We encourage Christian writings only, and will provide peer review and support for publishing. 2017 Mission Challenge

What might God want to do for His mission in the world through you?

In 2015 and 2016, a total of 33 volunteers accepted a challenge to do something bold for the sake of God’s kingdom rule. They used seed money and help from others to change our

community and world in beautiful ways. Our Deacons are again hosting a

Mission Challenge in 2017.

During worship on Sunday, April 23, we will ask for twenty volunteers to receive seed money for them to use

creatively with others for God’s mission. Is the Holy Spirit prompting you to

participate in the challenge and make a difference right next door or across

the world on behalf of Christ? On a few Sundays in June, the Mission Challenge participants will share briefly what God

enabled them to do.

Church Library Notes

Read. Study. Learn.

In this month’s library column, we are highlighting one new book, Cancer Now What?When a family member, friend, neighbor or you yourself receive that diagnoses, Cancer!, you are shocked, worried, sad, and scared. A pastor wrote, “When I was first diagnosed, all I could think was “I've got cancer! What do I do now?'”

Dr. Kenneth C. Haugk, a clinical psychologist, pastor and founder of the Stephen's Ministries, has written a book entitled, Cancer Now What? In writing this book, Dr. Haugk “draws on everything he learned as he walked beside his wife Joan, during her battle against

cancer, also, talking with over 3,500 cancer survivors, loved ones of people with cancer and medical professionals.” The result is a “caring, how-to resource written in a warm, conversational style, that provides helpful information, practical ideas and hope-filled encouragement” for those with cancer, their loved ones or Caregivers. Does the book provide medical advice? No, other than “offering strategies for finding additional, reliable information and working

with one's medical team.” The goal of the book is to “help those with cancer and their loved ones navigate the medical, emotional, relational and spiritual challenges that cancer brings.” One cancer survivor said of this book, “It's like having an organized toolbox for dealing with cancer. Whatever you're facing, you can reach in, find the right tool and put it to use.” Another survivor said, “When you hear that diagnosis, it feels as if you've been dropped into the middle of an ocean. Receiving this book is like being thrown a lifeline. It keeps you afloat, gives you hope, and helps you find your way back to dry land.” The book can be read cover to cover if you want or check the table of contents and choose those chapters that catch your interest or that speak to your needs or what you're wondering about. Cancer Now What?: taking action, finding hope, and navigating the journey ahead is on the new book shelf in the church library. Check it out. It's a good read!

Small Group Ministry: Would you like to lead or be a part of a small group here at Immanuel? Small groups help us grow in following Jesus and develop deeper connections with each other.

We are looking for people who are passionate about developing small group ministry in our congregation.

In late April, we will have a leaders’ meeting to begin planning for a small group ministry launch this fall.

Good Friday Service Practice

9th-12th Graders who are helping with our

Good Friday service will be practicing

immediately following our Maundy Thursday

service on April 13th. We should be done with

practice between 8:30-8:45 PM.

Easter Breakfast Set Up

All 5-12th Graders are invited to come help

set up the Social Hall for our Easter Breakfast

on Saturday April 15th. Many hands make

light work. We will meet in the Social Hall

at 10 AM and should be done by 11 AM.

Donuts will be provided!

Summer Stretch

information and your registration forms.

Trinity and Confirmation Students

We are heading down to Meals from

the Heartland in Des Moines on Wednesday

April 26th. This will replace our class time.

We will be leaving from Immanuel no later

than 5:45 PM. We will have an orientation at

MFTH at 6:45, then we will pack meals from

7-8:30 PM. We will have pizza for the ride

down to Des Moines. Please pack a snack to

eat on the way back to Story City. Our goal

is return back to Immanuel by 9:30 PM.

Youth Group Family Celebration

On Sunday April 30th we are going to be having

a Celebration of what makes our Youth Ministry

great at Immanuel .... OUR YOUTH GROUP

FAMILIES!!! More details for this event will be

sent out at the beginning of the month, but

please make sure to put on your calendar this

date. Our tentative time for this is

6:00-7:00PM.

Summary of March 2017 Council Meetings Joint Council President Terry Thompson called the meeting

to order. Gloria Oberender shared devotions. John and Jackie Arthur are transferring to

Ascension Lutheran in Ames, near their home. Rick Richie is taking over as chair of the Trustees for the rest of John’s term.
