THE IMMANUEL INFORMER
January 2016
MISSION STATEMENT Building Strong Relationships in Christ,
And Making Him Known to All.
I recently saw the new
Star Wars movie: The
Force Awakens. The
very first moments had
me hooked: the familiar
crawlscreen against a
backdrop of stars, with
stirring music by John Williams. The creators of
the movie deftly pulled out compelling threads
from each of the previous films and wove them
into a spectacular new story that somehow felt
very familiar. Old and new characters played off
each other in scenes that evoked and enlarged the
past story, with unexpected twists that took it in a
new direction.
In a lot of ways, the movie’s sense of familiar-
yet-new reminded me of how the gospel writers
retold the old story of Israel. In Christ,
everything their people had experienced was
charged with new meaning: the promise that
Abraham’s family would bless the whole world.,
their deliverance from slavery, their journey
through the wilderness to a new land, David’s
kingdom united and divided, the Temple, exile
and restoration, and the white-hot words of the
prophets. Through Jesus, God did something
new that builds on everything that came before.
How might God be rewriting the story of your
life, our community, and our world? Thanks be
to God for his familiar, yet surprising gift!

pray for the Nunziatos as they make this
transition.

LCMC Days of Prayer: January 5, 6, and 7, 2016
Every congregation, member and pastor in LCMC is
being invited to set aside some time each day of
January 5, 6, and 7, 2016 for prayer. Our attitude
toward prayer has often been characterized by saying,
“Well, all we can do now is pray!” Prayer is not the
hopeless act of desperation. Prayer is a gift that God has
given to us as a means to approach the throne of grace
with confidence—like that of a child coming to her
parents sharing concerns, victories, defeats and every
part of life. It is an opportunity to express the deepest
heartache and the greatest joy. Prayer is a conversation
between the Creator and the created…and the
conversation began with God, for us, in Christ Jesus.
Day One: January 5
This is a day focused on confession. We have made
our lives, our relationships—and even the church—in
our own image. We confess that the church belongs to
Jesus and not to us. We gather to lay down our pride, our
sin and our agenda and ask the Lord of the church for
forgiveness, which He gives freely and with mercy.
Day Two: January 6
This is a day of petition. Pray for your congregation,
for the pastors, for the leaders, for those who carry out
ministries, and for all the members. Pray for those in
hospital and nursing home ministries. Pray for all those
connected to your church that they might know God’s
redeeming love for all in Christ.
Day Three: January 7
This is a day for vision. Pray that the Holy Spirit will
again move through the hearts and minds of leaders and
pastors that God’s vision for His church might be
revealed and fulfilled. This is a time of prayer for
renewal, revival and encouragement. Pray for God’s
vision.
Let’s come together as an association of
congregations across the U.S. and around the world to
pray! I believe that the church will never rise up until we
first get down on our knees!
--LCMC Service Coordinator, Mark Vander Tuig

This is the time of year we think of making new beginnings
and positive changes in our lives. Two of our new books this
month have that very theme.
Lauraine Snelling’s touching story Someday Home brings
three women together under one roof — each with her own
unique situation, but all angry with the world and God, and
seeking the ability to forgive and move on. Although she has been
a widow for two years, Lynn Lundberg can’t get past her
husband’s death. Not wanting to leave the spacious home she and
her husband built on the shore of Lake Barnett, Minnesota, Lynn
decides to home-share, opening her home to other women to live
as housemates, and hopefully friends. By chance, an overheard
conversation at a quilt show brings Lynn and Judith Rutherford
together. Judith has spent her entire life living with and caring for
her parents. Her father, an especially demanding, controlling man,
has assured her of a secure future, but after his death she
discovered he had deeded their stately Victorian home to the town
to be used as a museum and she was to be hired as the curator and
caretaker. She wants nothing more than to leave and start living
her own life somewhere else.
Angela Bishop comes to Lynn’s house through the connection
their two sons have as friends from college. Angela had been
willing to do just about anything to please her husband, including
remaking herself into the attractive, professional businesswoman
he wanted her to be. She realized the sacrifice she had made when
he left her for someone else and she had no desire to continue the
life she had been living.
These three women come together and share a house, but
remaking it into their home makes for a heartwarming though
sometimes bumpy journey.
It the sunny shores of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina sound
appealing about now, you will enjoy reading Hatteras Girl by
Alice J. Wisler. Jackie Donovan writes for the local tourist
magazine but her heart's true desire would be to own and operate
the now defunct bed-and-breakfast, The Bailey House. Once a
thriving, inviting enterprise, it sits empty, showing signs of
neglect. Having someone to share her dream with would not only
make her world just about perfect, but also keep a passel of well-
meaning relatives off her case. With numerous obstacles and a
few false starts, how Jackie finally finds her way to happiness
makes an enjoyable story with a surprisingly pleasing ending.
We also have added two more books in the “Broadmoor
Legacy” series by Tracie Peterson and Judith Miller. They are: A
Daughter’s Inheritance and An Unexpected Love. The third book,
A Surrendered Heart is already in our collection.
In addition to the cold weather
outside, many people experience winters
in their personal lives. A recent loss
through death, divorce, or relocation may
leave them feeling lonely. A
hospitalization, a cancer diagnosis, or
ongoing medical problems may leave
them feeling isolated. The loss of a job,
the fear of layoffs, or a financial setback
can devastate one’s self-esteem. Family
and personal struggles may leave them
with nowhere to turn for support.
If you are going through a difficult
time, our Stephen Ministers can bring
God’s warm love back into your life.
They provide confidential, one-to-one
Christian care. They will meet with you
privately on a weekly basis to listen, to
support and encourage you, to pray with
and for you, and to walk with you for the
duration of your crisis.
To find out more about Stephen
Ministry and how you or someone you
know could be matched with a Stephen
Minister, talk with Pastor Anenson,
Pastor Kurt or Gayle Tate. Our Stephen
Ministers are ready to care for you!

Thank you to Thrivent
A special thank you to Thrivent for providing
us with Thrivent Action Team Funds of $250.
Thrivent’s generosity provided us with seed money
which was used to help pay for expenses for the
Christmas Tea and Bazaar.
Christmas Tea and Bazaar
A BIG “shout-out” and thank you to all who
were involved in helping make our Christmas
Tea and Bazaar such a wonderful event again
this year. I stood in awe as I watched it all come
together. God has blessed us with a very
talented and dedicated group of people at
Immanuel. Judy, Linda and Claudia once again
did a beautiful job of decorating the social hall.
People contributed
delicious soups,
sweets,
Scandinavian
goodies and crafts.
The hot chocolate
bar was a big hit
again this year as
well.
This year we served about 120 people and
made a profit of $2,400!! Pastor Anenson and I
visited and we both agreed that it is nice to
make money for the Church Women’s fund, but
even more important is the fellowship we
shared. Whether it was making crafts, rolling
potato cakes, or washing dishes, the event
brought many
people together
for a conversation
and laughter.
Again, thank you
all! Wishing you
and your family a
blessed
Christmas.

Sunday School News
We had a wonderful turnout for the Christmas Program this year! We had a total of 80 Sunday School
kids ages 3 years old to 6th grade sharing the Good News about Christmas! Thank you to all the teachers and
extra helpers that made it all possible. A special thank you to Mrs. McKim, Nicole Engelhardt and Emily
Anderson for making it all come together!
Our 2nd and 3rd graders, along with their parents will meet in the chapel with Pastor Kurt each Sunday
from January 3 to February 7 for the My Bible Faith Stepping Stone. These sessions will give them a brief
overview of the Bible.
4th and 5th graders lessons will be on Living the Christian Life. Five lessons will provide the children
with important guidelines that are needed to live a life that is devoted to God. In the last lesson the kids will
discover the blessings that come from living in a Christian home, and how to respond to others who do not
know Jesus.
Kingdom Kids (3 year olds–1st graders) will focus on special people in the Bible for the first part of
January and then start several lessons on putting Jesus first. Following Jesus means to put Him first. The four
lessons will teach the children how to put Jesus first with their words, actions, thoughts, and their whole
lives.

Riverside Bible Camp Registration & Discount Information
We want to encourage as many campers to come to Riverside this summer as possible
from our congregation. The theme this summer is “Released” based on Luke 4:18-19. Jesus
reads these words from Isaiah 61, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed
me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the
Lord’s favor.” There are a number of programs to choose from for each grade level.
Register online at: www.riversidelbc.org. Discounts for our campers include:
Registrations postmarked on or before February 15 receive a $15 or $20 discount
depending on which camp your camper is attending.
Since Immanuel is a member congregation of the Riverside Association, all
campers from Immanuel will receive a Member Congregation discount of $15.
Multiple Child - the first camper will be charged the full camp fee. The second
camper from the same family will receive a $30.00 discount. Each additional camper
will receive a $50 discount.
Immanuel Campership - $100 is given by the Immanuel congregation for a full week
of camp, $50 for Alpha Camp.
If you need further financial help in order to go to camp, let one of our pastors know. We
want to give everyone an opportunity to go to camp!
