Philosothon
The Bellingen High School Philosothon team participated in this year’s Philosothon
hosted by Bishop Druitt College. With over 100 students
participating, this contest of minds drew students from across the region to compete in
a Community of Inquiry into important philosophical and
ethical issues. This year Madeline Cross, pictured middle, with Jordan Neville and
Madelaine Allen, was awarded the medal for the Most
Promising Female Philosopher in the Junior Division. An excellent achievement.
Congratulation to the students and to Ms Williams who is coordinating this program.
Big Idea Accolades
Below is copy of a letter received from Fiona Barden, Business Consultant, Enterprise & Training Company Limited regarding our Big Idea students; they should be very proud.
“I just wanted to formally acknowledge my admiration for the group of students
I have worked with on the Big Idea – Evie, Stella, Olivia, Amelia, Milli, Noah, Clayton, Daniel, Galen and Flynn.
These students showed a level of maturity, understanding and community spirit of which I am sure you and your staff must be very proud. It was a pleasure to
work with these 10 students as they discovered more about business, teams and themselves. Undoubtedly you have some positive future leaders as part of your school group.
Congratulations.”
The following story was written by Year 8 student, Zane Brandt under exam conditions in response to the Year 8 Stairs Stimulus Photo
Bleary from lack of sleep, I shut my eyes as hard as I can. “Click.” I am
attacked by streams of light, snaking under my eyelids and biting at my eyes.
Eventually they withdraw and I am left standing in the hall, like some kind of
weathered statue.
Slowly, I stretch my stiff limbs out and prepare for my descent to the bathroom.
As if terrified, something is coming from the darkness, I slide my hands down
the smooth polished hand rolls, stubbing my toes on the way. Half way down, I
consider going back upstairs to our kitchen to get a drink first, but my bladders
shove these thoughts out of the way. “Bathroom” they say, “Bathroom, or
things will happen”.
As if spurred on by their threat, I move quickly down the cool, dark stairs and
with a final stub of my fourth toe, I step from the stairs with an exhausted
slumping pair of feet catching the rugged carpet one too many times. Massive
loops of rug stick up from the floor here and there, attempting to block my way.
I charge through, aiming for the bathroom door. As I lunge for the handle, the
carpets final, deadly trap slips out from under my feet and I slam into the wall
with a thump. Stifling a potential shout, I shake off any major damage and
complete my journey to the bathroom.
Two minutes later, I flush, wash my hands, and flick the lights off. Shutting the
door, I turn to the stairs to begin my climb and I realise something. How was I
stubbing my toes on the way down the stairs? My brain says “poor coordination
between me and my limbs”, my feet say “mah bad”, and my eyes say “the cat”.
My lips say “sorry Misty” and my arms say, “pick up the gentle, helpless cat
that I unintentionally kicked four times”. Feeling like a complete idiot, I pick her
up and apologise for my stupidity. With a confused “meow”, I set her down on
the couch and as I prepare to go back upstairs, I see my mate Tony outside my
window.
“Tony!” I yell, oblivious to my sleeping family. “What’s going on mate? Why
are ya up this early?” He turns to me with a white eyed grimace and whispers
“I saw him.” “What did you see?” I reply. “It”, he says quietly. “Are you
serious dude? You actually saw ‘It’”, I say with excitement. “Yeah”, he says. “I
saw ‘It’.” I think to myself, screw school tomorrow, I want to see ‘It’ and I open
the window and climb out to join him. “Where was it mate?” I ask inquisitively.
He turns me around, and points at something in the distance. “Is that”….”Yes”
he says “that’s it.” “Quite a sight if you ask me”. “It sure is”, I reply slowly.
Here Comes the Sun
Here comes the sun is a youth run event designed to show case the very best youth talent in Bellingen. The event is coordinated by Year 10 Bellingen High School students aged between 15 and 16 years who are currently participating in an enterprise learning program called The Big Idea. The students have selected as their ‘big idea’ for 2013 to create an event which will culminate in an authentic youth event to be held in Jarrett Park with an array of youth orientated activities. The event will consist of a skate competition, live home-grown youth acts performing on our main stage, local food stalls and a chai tent. The event also aims to be eco-friendly and sustainable. We hope you can join us on the day.
From the CAPA Faculty The Clappers ‘13
Friday 8th November saw Bellingen High dons its finest and scrub up for the CLAPPER Awards; the school’s annual film festival that showcases the students’ own works. The evening was a huge success, ably compared by the soon to be gone and sadly missed Sam Vallins. Hundreds of students frocked up to walk the red carpet and be in with a chance of winning the best dressed prize, they looked glorious.
The films were of the usual high standard, with the ever popular Peoples’ Choice bringing the house down. The winners were; Jasper Lopez, Best Minute Me, a new category in which the students capture the essence of themselves in 60 seconds; Blaise Borrer won the best documentary/mockumentary with his brilliantly ironic “Music should be banned”; The Best Music video went to Meagan Davis and Charlotte Wilkins for their hysterically funny version of “The Climb”, this film also took out the Peoples’ Choice by a massive majority.
The best dressed competition was, as always, hotly contested and the winners were - Blaise Borrer, Charlotte Wilkins and Bobbi Howell and Khan Carter.
From the TAS Faculty More great projects flowing out the door!
It's like Christmas came early with high quality projects going home from now till the end of
the year. Pictured is John Gaite with a magnificent hand forged steel fruit bowl, Dylan
Swanston with a side table made from a combination of Spotted Gum and Radiata and
Natasha Clancy helping Mr Richards spray her Radiata and Brush Box footstool. Also
pictured are Lia Grosvenor and Grace Costello who kindly spent time bending up some new
book holders for the Library.
Parents are reminded that all students should be wearing leather shoes at school and that
when buying new ones for Christmas, choose leather uppers for your kids so that we can
meet the DEC safety requirements.

Student Representative Council (SRC)
Do you know your SRC representatives? If you can identify the students in the photos above then
you should know that this is the Junior SRC.
The last two weeks have been a busy time for the whole SRC. We have held two successful fund
raisers this term. Our first fund raiser was for the children of Syria who have been displaced by
war and driven to hunger and desperation. The Save the Children Foundation invited us to fund
raise and Georga Hulbert drove this with the support of the SRC who baked cakes and slices to
raise funds. We collected over $360, a great effort I’m sure you’d agree.
Currently we are raising funds to help Karlie Swanson with the cost of her shoes so that she can
compete at Israel next year. We have raised over $120 so far from our recent cake stall and have

Sport News North Coast Surf Lifesaving Titles
Bellingen High School had a small group of four students compete at the North

Junior Boys Cricket
On Thursday 14th November the Junior Boys Cricket team took on Coffs Harbour
High School in the 3rd round of the North Coast Knockout Cricket tournament.
Losing the toss (again!) we were sent into bat with Byron Auld (Captain) and Sam
Taylor leading the charge. We made a respectable 168 in 40 overs (that’s 4.2 runs
an over) with Sam Taylor (44) and Jonah Mitchell (22) standout batsmen.
Taking to the field we knew we had to keep Coffs’ run rate low, as well as get
through our 40 overs due to the risk of a wash out from the looming storm. The
first wicket fell in Byron Auld’s 1st over and Coff’s batsmen made the walk back to
the stands at regular intervals during the rest of the afternoon. Some of the
standout bowlers were Aaron Rigney (2 wickets for 4 runs off 2 overs) and Joel
Kearsley (2 for 10 off 3 overs). Joel did a wonderful juggle to claim a fantastic
caught and bowl in his 2nd over!!
Coffs were eventually all out in the 27th over for only 89. All up a great
performance including a fantastic team effort in the field. We’re now into the 4th
round against Melville High.

Gallant Girls!
The Bellingen High School girls and
boys 19 years Futsal teams travelled
to Tweed Heads for the Australian
Futsal Champion of Champions last
weekend.
The girls were a somewhat depleted
team having lost Jess Marks to
Cricket, Shelby Mackenzie to Physical
Culture and Sam Barker to injury.
This meant seven brave players
headed to Tweed Heads for the
titles. Lacking a specialist goal
keeper young 14 year old, Zali Rees
stepped up to do the job. It was a big ask of any untrained keeper, let alone a 14
year old.
The competition started on the Saturday with the girls having a massive 4 games.
The first game against St Peter Claver from Brisbane was a classy game with both
teams displaying their skills. The girls really excelled in this game defeating St
Peter Claver 5-4 in a tight finish.
Unfortunately, with only one game played the girls were already tired and with only
two substitutes found the other three games much harder. The game against
Gympie saw the score just after half time at 1-1 with the girls missing some close
opportunities. In the last three minutes of the game Gympie slotted in four goals
to blow the score out to 1-5. The next game against the highly rated St Monicas
from Cairns, the tired legs really kicked in and St Monicas won 5-1. The final
game of the day against St Josephs from Port Macquarie was a game the girls
should have won, however, with injuries and tiredness winning the girls were lucky to
complete the game losing narrowly 3-2.
Sunday morning arrived with two more games to be played. Fortunately, after a
night’s sleep the girls had a little more energy to play the so far undefeated
Calvary College from Springwood. The girls gave it their all and played some of
their best Futsal surprising many to defeat Calvary 1-0.
After giving everything in their game against Calvary the girls had nothing for the
next game. They lost 5-0 to Shailer Park the eventual winners.
They may not have won the competition but the girls can hold their heads high and
be pleased with the way they played and the tremendous effort they gave.

Bellingen High School Uniform Code
Bellingen High School asks all parents to send their children to school neatly dressed in correct uniform. Every student should take pride in their personal appearance and the wearing of school uniform is an important step in developing a good school spirit. The following is acceptable uniform at Bellingen High School:
GIRLS: YEARS 7-10 ● White button front blouse or polo shirt with collar (no advertisements) ● Blue tartan skirt or royal blue shorts or denim shorts (not more than 10 centimetres from the knee - see picture) ● Dark blue slacks or blue jeans of an acceptable length ● Dark blue jumper and/or school jacket (no hoodies) ● Black shoes, white socks ● Acceptable sports shoes
GIRLS: SPORTS DAY/PE ● Royal blue shorts (not more than 10 centimetres from the knee) ● Gold polo shirt ● Acceptable sport shoes with white socks ● Hat
BOYS: YEARS 7 - 12 ● White button front shirt or polo shirt (no advertisements) ● Dark blue jumper and/or school jacket (no hoodies) ● Grey shorts (not more than 10 centimetres from the knee – see picture), slacks (single colour) or blue jeans ● Black shoes, white or grey socks, acceptable sports shoes

Unacceptable dress for Bellingen High School:
Stretch skirts (this is not negotiable). Girl’s shorts that are too short. Ripped clothing Singlets, string shoulder tops as shirts, sleeveless shirts Low cut necklines or armholes, blouses/shirts that are indecent in a school
environment; midriff tops (see skin, not in) Slogans or pictures excepting brand names (as in small pocket sized logo) No underwear as outwear (e.g. petticoats). Hoodies Coloured ties Long coloured / striped socks Sandals, crocs, thongs, high heels, ugg boots or slippers
Students wearing unacceptable dress will be either asked to change into school clothing or sent home.
Safety: NO long hanging bracelets, necklaces or earrings, excessively loose garments in practical subjects and sports activities.
Establishing and maintaining safe working environments is fundamental to the work of teachers. Footwear is an important safety item. Good soles provide a sound grip on the floor preventing accidents from occurring. Footwear can also protect feet from mechanical or chemical damage. DEC policy clearly states that it is mandatory that students carrying out practical activities using chemicals or equipment in schools wear enclosed leather footwear. This includes all Science, Industrial Arts and Home Economics classes. Our new Bellingen High School commercial stainless steel kitchen began operation last year and no student will be allowed in without leather footwear.
Leather shoes can now be purchased for as little as $20. Leather skate shoes and leather joggers are now readily available trendy options other than the traditional school shoe.
We urge parents to provide their children with leather upper shoes so that we can meet our OH&S obligations.
Remember that if students are out of uniform they are
required to bring a note from home AND/OR see
the Deputy Principal for a red uniform slip.
