First fishing catch and/or memory? My first significant catch memory was about a 16 inch brown trout that I caught fishing by myself on a small river outside of Fond du Lac.

A hidden talent you have? I have a small home run business called DJKustoms where I make and sell custom fishing rods including ice rods, musky rods, fly rods, and casting and spinning rods for walleye and bass. I also make and sell walleye streamers, a popular tactic for spring run walleye in the rivers of Lake Winnebago. A new product that I will be adding to my list is custom paracord waterfowl call lanyards.

CWTU Board of Directors Minutes 11-12-2019Meeting Location: Fin ‘N’ Feather, Winneconne, Wis.

President Stan Cichowski called the meeting to order at 6:17 p.m.

Minutes of 9/10/2019 Board Meeting: The minutes were reviewed and approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Presented by Joe Peikert and was approved. Joe shared that the banquet was very successful and raised more money than the prior year, looking to be close to $10,000. The Embrace a Stream Grant for Bird Creek has all beenworked out and the money is covering project bills within the approatpate time line to complete reports. Stan suggested movingsome of the money we have in savings to a 1-year CD for a higher interested rate. No voting is needed since it is not spendingof funds but rather moving of funds with accounts at Chase.

General Items:

CWTU Banquet Committee: Laura Tucker reported it was a hit. Attendance was 103 which was a bit more than last year’s 96. As noted in the treasurer’s report, there were a few more sponsors, more money raised on bucket raffles as well as live and silent actions. The “Founders” book and the 2020 calendar were both big hits. The auctioneer was unable to attend so we winged it and everyone seemed to like it better, so a cost savings for the future. Laura thanked everyone who helped and noted this was her last year as chair. Laura tentatively reserved a banquet room at the Best Western for Oct. 17, 2020. It was put to the board to consider options for next year, stay with the banquet or consider other ideas and options. The board decided that the banquet committee should meet soon for a wrap-up meeting and debate other possible ideas, then report back to the board at the next board meeting. Date for the meeting is Nov. 17 at 5:30 pm at the Fin ‘N’ Feather, all are welcome. It was noted that 2021 will be the 50th annivesary of CWTU.

CWTU By Laws Review: Joe Peikert suggested we review the by laws to make sure we are handling funds and proceedures within the guidelines of the by laws. Stan proposed a review committee be created to do the review. Everyone agreed and the committee consists of Stan Cichowski, Joe Peikert, John Tucker, Mike San Dretto and Dan Harmon III. By laws were last updated in Nov. 2011.

Fly Tying Classes Update: David Pable reported that the “Beyond the Woolly Bugger” class was a wrap on on Monday, Nov. 11. There were 7 students for the 4-night class program. David noted he plans to offer it again next year with a few tweaks. The beginner fly tying class will start in January, he noted to keep putting word the out, there are still plenty of spots open. Tom Meyer noted that the January Master’s class is full and ready to go.

CWTU Fleece Hats: Tom Meyer showed fleece hat options with the CWTU logo. These can be made for $12 each with an order of 25 or more. Everyone really like them. It was approved to buy at least 25 black and 25 camo, or more if the deal got better. These will be sold at programs and TroutFest20.

River Keepers Report: Bob Jozwowski reported that they had their wrap up event at the Fin ‘N’ Feather on Nov. 11. The wrap up event consisted of an appreciation dinner and a one hour program following. Bob thanked the 36 monitors that attended, which represented 40 teams on 50 monitoring sites, for their efforts and dedication to the Water Action Volunteers program and recognized the 3 new teams in 2019 on Willow Creek, Carpenter Creek and Radley Creek. Frank Druecke reported that CWTU was awarded a $2000 grant to conduct a field study of Total Phosphorus measurement working with the DNR in Oshkosh. Fro more on this, see page 1 of this issue of the Brookie.

TroutFest20: Wayne Parmley reported that the committee had just met prior to the meeting and plans were in motion. The committee this year includes John Gremmer, Bob Haase, Wayne Parmley and Jeff Treu. Date is Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020. Note this will be the 20th TroutFest.

Cabin Fever Day: CWTU will have 2 booths there, one for River Keepers (Bob Jozwowski) and one for the Dan Harmon III Fly Fishing School (Wayne Parmley). Also, Mike San Dretto will be handling the TUCARES booth. Scott Grady will follow up with Cabin Fever Day coordinator to firm up the CWTU participation.

“Founders” Book and 2020 Calendar: The board encouraged selling the remainders at the next few meetings and programs, $20 for the book and $10 for the calendar. Wayne Parmley noted he would get it posted on Facebook and Instagram and then onto the website as well. Tom Meyer will handling selling the book and John Tucker will handle the calendars.

Wisconsin State Banquet Tickets: Stan Cichowski can collect money for tickets and get you registered for the State TU Banquet on Feb. 1, 2020, at the Best Western Convention Center, Oshkosh. This year tickets will be electronic (not physically printed), it will be noted in a data base that you purchased tickets, so at check-in they will already have you down for your ticket purchase. As in the past, each chapter is expected to donate $500 worth of cash and/or goods. Ideas similar to last year were discussed, donate a fly rod or two that were leftover from the CWTU banquet and then the difference in cash, should be about 50/50.
