NTPC Debuts on Power Exchange

NTPC has made a small beginning with the sale of surplus power from its power stations in Singrauli, Vindhyachal, Rihand, Unchahar and Dadri through Power Exchange.

The decision for sale of power through exchange is based on the amendment issued to Tariff Policy in January, 2016, allowing the generating companies to sell surplus power in the market with the consent of beneficiary and share the incremental gain with them making it a win win situation for both.

Ministry of Power Initiative

• Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) was launched by Prime Minister stof India Shri Narendra Modi on 1 May 2015, replacing the ‘Bachat Lamp Yojana’.

Within 1 year of its launch, 9 crore LED bulbs were sold in the country, reducing their electricity bills by 55 billion.

th • The scheme was announced as ‘Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP)’ on 5January 2015, urging the people to use LED bulbs in place of incandescent bulbs, tube lights and CFL bulbs as they are more efficient, long lasting and economical in their life cycle duration.

• The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy stopped the subsidy on CFL-based solar lighting system to encourage the use of the LED version. The scheme was implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) (under the Ministry of Power).

• The government's target is to replace 77 crore incandescent bulbs in India with LEDs by 2019 leading to an expected reduction in installed load of 20,000 MW with annual estimated savings of over 100 million kwh and an annual reduction of 400 billion (US$5.9 billion) in electricity bills.

• EESL, a joint venture of state-run power companies, is implementing the project and has achieved 75% reduction in the price of LED bulbs through a combination of aggressive and transparent procurement process and passing on this benefit to consumers.

Innovations in Power Sector

When you think of the East River in New York City, renewable energy probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Yet the river, once a cesspool and dumping ground for an occasional body, has found itself at the forefront of the green-energy movement. In September 2012, Trey Taylor, owner of Verdant Power, sank a special three-bladed electric turbine into the waterway that runs along Manhattan's east side. Taylor designed the turbine, which looks like a modern fan attached to a torpedo-shaped body, to generate electricity from the push and pull of the river's rushing currents

By 2017, thirty of such turbines could dot the river, with each unit generating 35 kilowatts of electricity. If successful, the project could provide enough power to fuel hundreds of homes. Made of plastic and layered fiberglass, the East River tidal turbines are one of several technological innovations rocking the hydroelectric world.

From one end of the planet to the other, scientists and engineers are working on a variety of concepts — some real, others imagined — that will help make this very ancient power source an even more important modern one. These days, 6 percent of U.S. electricity comes from hydropower (that's 70 percent of the renewable electricity generated in the U.S.). The supply is limitless, although not every area is a good place to build a hydroelectric project.

Mohammad Ali

The late Mohammad Ali (Original Name - Cassius Clay), one of the greatest boxer ever to lift a glove and heavyweight boxing champion of his time, as a 12-year-old boy, was given a beautiful new bicycle as a gift. The bicycle was stolen, and when Ali went to the local police department to report the theft, he met officer Joe Martin, who introduced Ali to the world of boxing, and this was the beginning of his boxing career.

As a kid growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Ali didn't ride the bus to school like other kids. Instead of riding, he would literally race the bus to school every morning.

Once Ali entered a diner in Kentucky wearing the gold medal he won in Rome proudly around his neck. The waitress told him, “Sorry, we don’t serve Negroes.” Ali retorted, “Well that’s okay - I don’t eat ‘em either.”

Ali has starred as himself in four motion pictures. In December of 1969, he was the lead in a Broadway show called Buck White.

rdMohammad Ali passed awayat the age of 74, on 3 June, 2016.
