A Tale of an NWK Farmer Success

Elias Mwanza was born in 1954 at Enock Village, Chief Nzamane, Chipata District. He begun his farming career in 1985 whilst working as a teacher. In 2010/11 he decided to take farming as a business and then got involved with NWK on a contractual partnership basis to manage strategic roadside demonstration plots. Elias’ production yield on his demoplot for this year based on his 3 plots of 0.25 hectares was 2.28mt/ha Cotton, 2.82mt/Ha Soya Beans and 9.96mt/ha Maize. 6 years ago he had 1.4mt/Ha of Soya Beans. Elias explained that by using the right process (ripping, applying manure, lime and soya mix, weed control and herbicides) it changed his outcomes dramatically. He also realized that one line of Soya which did not receive innoculum performed poorly despite the other procedures he had taken to ensure the crop had no issues. Elias sees great value in partnering with NWK. He explained, “I have gained knowledge on Soya, Maize and Cotton production, and as a result my yields in all my major crops have steadily increased from year to year. I re-invested part of my profits into improving my soils by deep tractor ripping and applying sufficient amounts of well decomposed manure. I am now more credit worthy than I used to be because I now pay back my loans full and in time. I have hosted two big consecutive farmer field days in the last two seasons. In the future I want to acquire a maize sheller, I plan to establish an agro-shop , and I plan to extend my production area from my current 7.5Ha to 15Ha in the next 5 years. My ambition is to become an External Farmer Business School (FBS) trainer for NWK.”

NWK E-payment Programme

NWK have begun their implementation of the E-payment programme. The company has partnered with various Financial Service Providers with the intention to move all NWK contracted farmers onto an Electronic Payment Platform. Events were held in the Eastern Provice with FNB, Zanaco and Barclays. The payment platform will reduce the risk of cash handling to farmers, time delays in farmer payments and cash handling fees to the company. More events will be held during the course of the year in areas with high concentration of NWK farmers. Website: www.nwkzambia.com
