Volume 19, Issue 11 November, 2021

“O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good.

And His mercy endureth forever” (Psalm 107:1)

And for those things for which we are most thankful: the sweet comfort of Your Gospel,

the forgiveness of all our sins by the blood of our Lord Jesus, the promise of our resurrection to eternal life;

for the joyful companionship afforded by the Church; for Your Word that is a lamp to our feet and light to our path;

for the gifts of Baptism and the Eucharist; for our pastors, teachers, and everyone who faithfully

serve us Your best and highest gifts: Glory to You, O Lord!

God’s Word is living and us. As you meditate on God’s Word Grove, I graduated from the semi- active, it is not merely words you will find that different things nary, we moved from St. Louis, my stick out to you, even in stories that

will find that there is a two-way in-faith in us.

Most churches in the LCMS use the 3-year lectionary to decide which readings they will use each Sunday; we are currently in year 2 or “series B.” It has been interesting preparing for sermons because it was 3 years ago that I started preaching, after passing my first “Homiletics” class at the seminary. When I look back at some of the preparation I did 3 years ago, some of the things that I got out of a passage, it’s almost like looking at someone else’s notes.

I was certainly at a very different time in my life as I think back to just three years ago. In fact, my life is much different than it was 6 months ago. In the past six months, my daughter was born, I

of my “firsts” as a pastor which hap-pen each day, have undoubtedly changed me. I see the world differently than I did 6 months ago, and I see the world much differently than I did 3 years ago.

Our experiences shape who we are. They shape our iden-tity, and how we process the world around us. They af-fect how we interact with Scripture. As I said before, looking back at my notes from three years ago, was like looking at someone else’s notes. Scripture was written in

This window is located above the exit door on the east side of the nave, near the altar. It indicates that our congregation stands solidly upon the Lutheran confessions summed up in the 3 principles: Scripture alone, Grace alone, Faith alone,” reproduced here in Latin, which was the formal church language of Luther’s day. The “Luther Rose” is centered firmly on the Bible; a further re-minder of the Reformation is the rendering of the famous castle at Wittenberg.

a way which was meant to make you think. It asks big questions and makes big claims. It unapolo-getically tells a story which chal-lenges you to think differently than you did before.

Psalm 1:1-2 “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.

The Psalmist urges us to meditate on God’s word day and night, our whole life we are to meditate on God’s Word. God’s Word is living and active, it is not merely words on a page. God’s Word does things, it meets us where we

teraction. Your experiences affect how you interpret scripture, but also Scripture will begin to interpret you, and God’s word will begin to shape you. As we grow, as we change, as we move into new periods of our life, God’s word will speak differently to us, it will challenge us in different ways. But the message of the Gospel remains the same, that Jesus Christ came to this earth to seek and save the lost, to bring the kingdom of God, and to forgive the sins of all people.

Three themes revolve around the birth of Christ — Advent, with the familiar wreath, one pink (joy) and three violet (repentance) can-dles...the Nativity, with the Chi Rho monogram and Epiphany, joined to the Nativity by the five-pointed star whose rays reach down to three crowns representing the three kings.

The Chi Rho monogram is one of the most ancient of Christian symbols, linking the first two letters of the Savior’s name in Greek (Xpistos-Christ) and adding a cross bar to prophesy the coming sacrifice of our Lord.

-Elm Grove Lutheran’s Board Members at Work for our Church

The Lord has blessed EGL with many devoted members who serve on the various boards. They are essential volun-teers who contribute to the smooth and complete functioning of our church and school. Every month, Seasons will feature the individuals who have been elected to each board. We thank them for their service! Praise be to God.

Church Council

The Church Council is comprised of the President, Vice President, Secretary, and the chairs or annually designated repre-sentative of each board, except that the board of Elders has two representatives. The Pastors, the Christian Day School Principal and the Comptroller have advi-sory roles. They are committed to doing God’s work for the benefit of our church. Prayerfully consider serving on a board, or as an officer, when the opportunity is pre-sented to you.

Churches used to have an alms box, also known as a poor box or mite box. It was a secure box for the receiving of special gifts for the care of the poor in a congregation or community. Here at EGL money designated for the Pastoral Mercy Fund is used by the Pastors

to provide finan-cial support for those in need. Simply indicate on the envelope or on the note line of a check that you want your gift designated for “Pastoral Mercy Fund.”

Pledge Weekend November 18 and 21 “Faithful Stewards of God’s Infinite Grace”

All of us are managers and stewards for God. According to Psalm 24:1, the earth and everything in it belong to God. God has entrusted us with managing God’s resources. For this reason, as God calls us to a level of

deeper devotion, we view our time, our talents and our treasure as gifts of God’s infinite grace, as blessings God has loaned to us for a short time.

Please complete the Pledge Card that you received on the back of the letter that the Stewardship Board sent out a few weeks ago. They will be collected at worship services on

Thursday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 21.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

(1 Peter 4:10)

Singers Bring Harmony to Elm Grove Lutheran The Midwest Vocal Express is an a cappella men’s chorus that sings barbershop arrangements and other styles of singing. The chorus (mostly abbreviated as the MVE) is in its 32nd year. The chorus sings Spring and Christmas shows and competes with 900 other barbershop choruses worldwide at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s interna-tional contests. They will compete in Charlotte, NC in July of 2022 and they will hold at Christmas Concert on Decem-ber 11, 2021 at Greendale High School in the afternoon.

The MVE Chorus is happy to sing in the EGL cafeteria and occasionally outside in the parking lot. They spent months online during the worst of the COVID pandemic, but they returned to in-person rehearsing for vaccinated mem-bers. They still run a simultaneous Zoom session for those who are not vaccinated. While the chorus has had as many as 70 members singing onstage, currently they tend to have about 20 singing with masks at the Elm Grove Lu-theran cafeteria from 7-9 p.m. on Monday nights. If you are vaccinated and want to peek into a practice, you are quite welcome. Maybe you want to join singing with them.

You may enjoy hearing them sing by visiting: https://youtu.be/2LTPOB4lNcE

Welcome to the MVE.

The LWML morning group will meet on Wednesday, November 3 in the BAAC at 10:00 a.m. Instead of a Bible study, we will start with a devotion. During this meeting, we will be filling jars with the dry ingredients for

Friendship Soup.

The LWML evening group will meet on Monday, Novem-ber 8 in the BAAC at 7:00 p.m. for the purpose of filling jars with the dry ingredients for cookies.

Mission Grant #7 for the LWML-SWD is “Introducing Muslims to the Savior,” for $12,000. Lutheran Herit-age Foundation translates Bible story books, the cate-chism, and other Lutheran books into ethnic languages of Muslims in foreign countries and distributes these

books to children and adults. With these books, they are able to read the Gospel message in their own languages. 79 years ago, the LWML had its beginning to help the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod with missions. Over 100 women gathered at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Chicago on July 7-8, 1942 to organize the LWML. They chose the theme “Serve the Lord with Gladness,” from Psalm 100:2 This theme has served the National LWML all these years. To God be the glory!

It was great to hand out LWML mite boxes on LWML Sunday. Fill these mite boxes with coins and bring them back to church. You may drop them off in the big LWML Mite Box in the lower entrance of the church, the library counter, or in Sherri Bond’s church mailbox, as she is the LWML Treasurer. Thank you so much. It is appreciated.

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the pow-er of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” (Roman 1:16)

Barbara Kurth

These make great Christmas gifts. The proceeds help fund the Mission Grants and also

send delegates to convention as voters.

They will be available Sunday, Nov. 21 and 28. Beat the crowd and call Jean Kruse (262-786-4520) to reserve yours before the actual date.

Our motto is “try before you buy!” There will be samples at the table.

They sell for $7.00 per jar or three jars for $20.00. Mix or Match.

LWML is once again making soup jars.

This year they have a partner!

Cookie jars!!

LWML Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes

We packed 28 boxes and will have to meet again as we ran out of boxes.

What a blessed thing to happen!!!

LWML sends a big THANK YOU to all who provided gifts for the

shoe boxes!!

EGL volunteers who packed the gift boxes were, from left to right; Carole Braun, Sue Schmalzer, Linda Hoffmann, Sherri Bond and Deb Weller. Jean Kruse took the photo.

Recognize the church and some of it’s attendees in the photo? The image appears on the LCMS website in a story called: ‘Church in a messy world’: BOD looks back on pandemic year. The caption reads: “Members worship at Elm Grove Lutheran Church, Elm Grove, Wis., in 2020. The Synod’s response to restrictions and mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic was given considerable attention during the Aug. 26 Board of Directors meeting. (LCMS/Erik M. Lunsford)“

THEOLOGICAL

MAN CAVE The "Theological Man Cave" is held at Revere's restaurant at 505 Wells St. in Delafield from 7:00 to 8:30ish.

Ladies,

Advent by Candlelight will be back again on Sunday, November 28, 2021 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Fellowship Hall will be aglow with beautifully decorated tables, candles, and Christmas decorations. We will be greeted by the fragrance of flavored cof-fees and teas, and delicious appetizers and desserts.

Amid this lovely setting, we will take time to prepare our hearts for Advent, the com-ing of our Savior, Jesus. We will journey back in time to hear what Jesus’ mother has kept and pondered in her heart as she opens and shares her memories in “Mary’s Treasure Box”.

Please join us for this time of fellowship and reflection. This is a good time to invite a friend, neighbor, or relative. Please call Judy Hogan (262-455-1013) or Carole Braun (262-781-1494) for reservations and to offer your helping hands or to bring a special treat. A $3 donation will be received at the door.

A 45-60 minute presentation is given on one topic that then serves as the grist for our con-versations as we enjoy drinks and snacks.

Join us on Thursday, November 11 at 7 p.m. More details to come in the weekly newsletter.

The "Theological Man Cave" is meant to complement the monthly "Stammtisch.”

Happy November, EGL Guys! The weather is colder outside, but inside it’s warm and toasty, and it’s a great time to take a break from our daily routine to share and reconnect with those around us. DID YOU KNOW? FCC to require 10-Digit dialing code for Wisconsin residents beginning Oct. 24th

Beginning October 24, 2021, all customers with the area codes 262, 414, 608, and 920 will need to dial the area code and telephone number in order to connect their local and long-distance calls. This will apply to all calls that are currently dialed with seven digits. The change comes after the Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) adopted Order FCC 20-100 approving ‘988’ as the three-digit abbreviated dialing code to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline starting July 16, 2022. Customers will continue to dial 1+ the area code + telephone number for all long-distance calls.

BREAD & FISH For decades, Elm Grove Lutheran Church has partnered with various churches in the city of Milwaukee; to donate clothing, furniture and food from our congregation. With Thanksgiving approaching, it’s an appropriate time to highlight this effort; in the churches we serve, and the group of members who volun-teer to assist. Over the years, through this outreach, many from EGL have modeled merciful and compassionate care. Whether they made donations of clothing, food or money, or sorted and delivered items, their actions nurture love for our neighbors. Thanks be to God!

The Lutheran churches and organizations we serve are:

• Bethany, 2031 N. 38th Street • Holy Ghost, 541 W. Concordia Ave. • Hope, 1115 N. 35th St. • Mission of Christ, 912 W. Center St. • Orphan Grain Train

Generally food and clothing are given to these churches. We also give monetary donations re-ceived from members, so that the food pantries can purchase the specific food they need from places like Feeding America and Second Harvest.

We also support, through household goods, and furniture, these organizations:

• Economy Center, 78th and Burleigh • Blessed Again Resale, 7624 W. Hampton

Mission of Christ Lutheran Church, right.

Hope Lutheran Church, left, started in 1907 as a mission church of Mt. Olive English Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod, which was the first English language Lutheran church of either the Missouri or Wisconsin-synod churches in Milwaukee.

Bethany Lutheran Church, at left, was built in 1921. It is a typical example of 1920’s late Gothic Revival Churches.

Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, below, was built in 1905. German language services continued into the 1960’s.

Since 1998, for the 23 years since, EGL has given the following gifts to our Milwaukee church partners:

$100,257 in monetary donations 7,691 boxes of clothing 1,939 boxes of food

We pray that we continue to do God’s work, and grow EGL’s Bread & Fish.

The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all. (Proverbs 22:2)

Ron Wegner leads our Bread and Fish initia-tive at EGL. After retirement, in 1995, he and his wife, Bev, readily signed on to help meet the needs of our urban churches. Along with his dear friend, the late Jim Huebschen, they delivered donated clothing and food to churches, as well as furniture and household items to our resale store partners. Upon Jim’s death, Ron recruited Jim Olson, who eagerly accepted the oppor-tunity to get involved.

Ron has a loyal and hardworking group of women who he calls when the bins in the Fellowship Hall are full, meaning donated clothing needs to be reviewed and sorted. The photo at left shows some of those women who get the job done.

Photos above show the men at Mission of Christ who manage the food pantry and incoming clothing donations. Eric, in the green sweater, is our contact.
