Last Week, we really enjoyed participating in some Aboriginal education activities provided free of charge to our students for National Reconciliation Week. I had the pleasure of attending both the incursion and the excursion and found these experiences to be incredibly valuable for staff and students. A huge thank you to Ms Tran and Miss Goyen for organising these activities. This week we conducted our school public speaking finals and we congratulate Daniel P, Leanne W, Joshua L and Sofia T who will move on to the next level of the competition and represent our school at the interschool finals. Below are some photos from our excursion last week. Enjoy the extra time with your families during this long weekend. We look forward to seeing the students back next Tuesday. Kind regards, Miss Gould Acting Principal

Reconciliation Week Events:

Aboriginal Cultural Incursion

Kindergarten and Year 2 participated in an Aboriginal Cultural Incursion on Thursday May 30th with a visit from local Darug elder, Uncle Chris Tobin. We learnt a lot of Aboriginal culture.

The program was sponsored by City of Parramatta, as part of our National Reconciliation Week commemoration. It was delivered by Cultural Heritage and Tourism, who also deliver free welcome walks for new residents; cultural tours; school holiday activities and educational programs across the Local Government Area.

The upcoming Aboriginal programming includes Aboriginal Culture Camps, Ochre Painting, a Bush Tucker Walk, a Bush Medicine Workshop and our regular Warami Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural Walk. Aboriginal and other programs can be booked through www.parramatta-programs.eventbrite.com, or 8839 3311.

Giants Walkabout Excursion

On Friday May 31st, Year 1 participated in the Giants Walkabout Excursion, including Indigenous music and dance, storytelling and painting workshops.

NAIDOC Week and Warami

City of Parramatta Media Release

City of Parramatta will host a number of community events over the coming months as part of a unique Indigenous event program called Warami, a Darug word meaning “good to see you”. The series of events – which includes National Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, Burramatta NAIDOC, NRL Indigenous Round matches and an invitation-only camp – runs from 23 May until September 2019. “For more than 60,000 years the Burramattagal people have called Parramatta home, so it’s wonderful to have an event program that recognises and celebrates our Indigenous community and their strong ongoing connection to the region,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Andrew Wilson said. “Warami also provides an opportunity for the wider community to come together to learn about and experience the rich culture and traditions of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.” Burramatta NAIDOC returns to Parramatta Park on Sunday 14 July, from 11am to 6pm. This year’s event, which is themed VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH. Let’s work together for a shared future, will consist of traditional and contemporary music and dance performances, market stalls and workshops among other offerings.

For more information about Warami, City of Parramatta’s unique Indigenous event program, visit https://www.discoverparramatta.com/events/warami

Kind Regards,

Ms Tran
