    Foot Facts

By Dr. Eric R. Tepper, Podiatrist FOOT & ANKLE PAIN

The ankle joint joins three bones, moving through a wide range of motion and supporting a person's entire body weight. These features make the ankle suscep- tible to pain and injury. Most foot conditions result from acute injury or stress on the area due to high-impact activities, improperly fitting shoes, or repetitive motions. Strains can range from mild feelings of pain and stiffness to ruptured muscles that cause internal bleeding and bruising. Sprains occur when ligaments become torn or overextended. Overuse, trauma, and prolonged pressure are common triggers for bursitis, or inflammation of the fluid-filled, protective sacs near joints. Pain and tenderness just outside a joint may be tendinitis, which is often caused by inflammation or a small tendon tear.

The human foot is an amazing marvel. When its complex parts aren't working together properly to allow you to walk in comfort, it's time to seek a podiatrist's attention for diagnosis and treatment. As a physician who specializes in foot care for men, women, and children, a podiatrist's extensive training provides the necessary experience to treat a full range of foot and ankle disorders. Have your feet got you down? We offer complete family foot care at Rice Medical Center. Please call 234-5571 for a Tuesday appointment.

P.S. Other causes of foot and ankle pain include fractures, plantar fasciitis, and : bunions.
