AADE Lafayette Chapter members,

The second general meeting for 2011-2012 will be held at the Petroleum Club on Oct. 17.

John Nguyen, with National Oilwell Varco, will be speaking on the topic of “The past, current, and future state of real-time drilling optimization and methods.” As we all strive to be as operationally efficient as possible, Nguyen has valuable insight and can help shed light on future techniques capable of optimizing a company’s drilling portfolio.

Staying consistent to our speakers topic of discussion, being better, faster and more innovative is always at the forefront of our thoughts as engineers. Today’s digital oilfield has helped tremendously to keep all of us out of trouble.

The complex and increasingly regulated operation of today’s oil and gas assets represents a management challenge unequalled in our industries history. These challenges include increasingly complex engineering to recover hard to reach reserves and increased complexity to meet growing

demand, stringent regulatory, environmental and safety restrictions.

Meeting these challenges has lead the industry to become nearly completely digital, whether it be communication at the rig site offshore to real-time production data from the North Slope or real-time assessment of fracture treatments in West Texas.

The speed at which we can access data has led oil and gas companies and their suppliers to meet the mounting pressure to innovate, keep costs down and improve the speed, safety and agility of delivering to the global economy.

Efficiency a Crucial Concern

I look forward to Nguyen's discussion.

I would like to continue to update you all on the overall permit status in the Gulf. As of Oct. 14, as per the BOEM website:

• Shallow water: To date, 82 new shallow water well permits have been issued since the implementation of new safety and environmental standards on June 8, 2010. Just 16 of these permits are currently pending, with 10 having been returned to the operator for more information.

Deepwater drilling applications fall into two categories for the implementation of our new

regulations. To clarify these differences, we have included the narrative below. The deepwater moratorium was lifted on Oct. 12, 2010, and is the reference for inclusion of new rules in applications:

• Deepwater permits requiring subsea containment: Since an applicant first successfully demonstrated containment capabilities in mid-February, we have approved 150 of these permits for 41 unique wells, with 32 permits pending and 14 permits returned to the operator with requests for additional information, particularly information regarding containment.

• Deepwater activities not requiring subsea containment: Since the implementation of new safety and environmental standards, 46 of these permits have been approved,

with two permits pending, and one permit returned to the operator with requests for additional information. These activities include water injection wells and procedures using surface blowout preventers.

In referencing the above statistical data, please keep in mind that the tracking of this information by the government is not completely accurate. Classification of permit status is namely the issue in determining the correct number of permits approved and currently in the system.

In closing, I look forward to seeing everyone at our monthly meetings.

Until next month, may you and your family have a safe and happy Halloween.

123Signup is now live and ready to use.

Beginning this month, members will be able to begin setting up their logins to allow them to register for all AADE Lafayette Chapter meeting and events and renew their membership.

In an effort to make it easier and quicker for members to attend AADE Lafayette Chapter events, the board voted to begin using an online platform to allow members to register for AADE events and general meetings anytime, anywhere.

The board has chosen 123Signup, a leading provider of online registration solutions, to make this possible. In addition to doing extensive research on this online solution, many other AADE chapters are already using this online registration system with much success.

123Signup has invested millions to create the best online event registra-tion and membership management ser-vice available. Around the clock and seven days a week, 123Signup's online services handle member regis-trations, subscriber access, event post-ings, event registrations, collections and more.

This online solution is used by hundreds of organizations, large and small, including:

• Subscription-based organizations • Corporations• Financial firms• Venture capital firms• Training organizations• Colleges and universities• Trade associations Since its inception, 123Signup has

conducted about one million transac-tions and supports a member database of about half a million active users.

123Signup will help manage:• Membership databases• Membership renewals• Event registration/payment• Newsletter distribution• Monthly meeting remindersThe hope is that this system will

make registration and payment easier and therefore increase attendance.

In addition, this will help ease some of the tasks volunteer committee members are responsible for. Up-to-the-minute operational reports will also be available using this system, which will allow the board to better track event participation and fund-raising goals.

If you have questions regarding this new system, please contact a local board member. We will do our best to answer any questions and address any concerns.

We will continue to allow e-mail and telephone RSVPs for general meetings, as well as onsite registra-tion, while members get setup to use 123Signup and any log-in issues are resolved.

Thank you in advance for embrac-ing this new technology as a way to ease the load on our volunteer staff.
