3Autumn has arrived, and with it comes the anticipation and memory of hunting formany of our collectors. So we honor the tradition with a number of sporting prints in thisissue.

Still infused with the spirit of performing arts enlivening our gallery walls this summer, wealso offer a few works from Per-Form.

On exhibit currently is Alessandro Mastro-Valerio: A Retrospective. From his earliestdrypoints to his later experimentation with mezzotints and aquatints, Alessandro Mastro-Valerio (1887-1953) explored the female form through much of his 22 years of printmaking.Stumbling upon a display of mezzotint engravings at the Century of Progress Exposition inChicago, 1933, he was intrigued by the printing method. Mastering the medium quickly, hepublished his first mezzotint in 1934, and one of his earliest mezzotints, “Morning,” waschosen for Fine Prints of the Year in 1935. Rich in tonality, Mastro-Valerio’s prints glow andbreathe, filled with quiet emotion – one that resonates deeply with viewers. Two briefdepartures from the female form occurred in the years 1931–1933, when he producedmostly landscapes, and in the last several years of his printmaking career, 1950–1952, whenhis prints were pure abstractions, created from continuous, or single bite aquatints. “Motifin Seascape,” the 1949 Canon Prize winner, and several original plates are in the show,

which runs through November 9th.

As a participant in FAD Georgetown 2013, an event promoting Georgetown as a culturaldistrict and prominent resource for Fashion, Art & Design, The Old Print Gallery is
