BOXTED VILLAGE HALL The Annual General Meeting of the Boxted Village Hall Management Committee will be held on Thursday 22 October at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. The meeting, which should last about an hour, will hear reports on the financial position, the issues and problems that have arisen in the past year and plans for the future This is an opportunity to share in the work of maintaining and enhancing this great village asset
SHOEBOX APPEAL 2015 Many readers are doubtless filling shoeboxes with small toys, comforts, writing and drawing materials etc in support of Operation Christmas Child. Nena Harding of Samaritan’s Purse will be coming to St Peter’s Family Service on 18 October to give an account of how last year’s thousands of shoeboxes were sent and received. The appeal in Boxted and Langham is organised by Claire Arculus (271264) and is supported by the Boxted St Peter and Langham Primary Schools as well as the two churches. Claire has shoeboxes for people to fill if they haven’t any. The usual leaflets/donation forms will be included in the November issue of the Newsletter.

BOXTED HISTORY GROUP The Group’s second summer outing comprised a guided walk around the heart of Ipswich, an ancient town that received its first Charter from King John in 1200. But there has been a settlement by the Orwell since the 7th century and, never having been sacked or ruined, the town is one of only four in the country to have been continuously occupied from its foundation. Throughout its history Ipswich has had a tolerant attitude towards invaders and immigrants. The early town was built on a grid pattern, with large dwellings on substantial plots that were eventually taken up by the lanes and buildings we see today. Many very notable old buildings remain: they include twelve medieval churches (such as St Lawrence, which contains the oldest peal of bells in the country, and St Mary at the Elms), the Great White Horse Hotel made famous by Charles Dickens in “The Pickwick Papers” and the “Ancient House”, the jewel in Ipswich’s crown.
BOXTED EVERGREEN CLUB The AGM of the Evergreens will be held on Wednesday 28 October at the unusual time of 3 to 5 pm, when there will be fish and chips to enjoy. The Evergreen Club is open to more or less everyone now and new members are very welcome. They will enjoy both cheerful and friendly companionship and a full programme of stimulating talks, social occasions and visits to interesting places. Have a word with LindaTralau on 272710.
LANGHAM COMMUNITY SHOP
Secretary The Management Committee is looking for a new Secretary. There are just four meetings a year, usually on a weekday morning, and the AGM. All files etc are in good order and up to date. If you would like to join the committee and become involved in this way with the vibrant Community Shop, please call in and speak to the Shop Manager, Jane Morton (272431), or call the Chairman, Gill Flack (322999), for details. Volunteers The Shop is run entirely by volunteers and more of them are needed to spread the workload. If you have two hours to spare from time to time, why not think of joining in? The work is not difficult but full training is given. It is in two-hour shifts and people work in pairs. There is no commitment as to days or times—you just sign on for the shift that suits you. The atmosphere is jolly and friendly: the Shop is a great place for making new friends or catching up with old ones. If you don’t have two hours to spare, you may consider being an ‘Opener’ or ‘Closer’ for half an hour at the beginning or end of play. Do pop in and have a chat with Jane Morton or call her on 272431.
CONFIRMATION CLASSES The Rector is conducting a series of classes for anyone who would like to investigate the possibility of being confirmed or who would like a ‘refresher’ course on the basics of the Christian faith. The classes will be at the Rectory, West Bergholt, from 7.30 to 9 pm on: Wednesdays 7, 14 & 21 October; Mondays 26 October, 2 & 9 November There are ‘sign-up’ sheets in St Mary’s and St Peter’s Churches for those interested to put their names on. The Confirmation Service will be at Chelmsford Cathedral on Sunday afternoon, 22 November.

HAVE YOU SEEN HENRY? Henry Thornton, a very handsome ginger cat, has been missing from his home at King’s Cottage, Langham Lane, Boxted, for nearly two months. He has no collar but has been ’chipped’. If you have seen anything of him, please contact Nicola Thornton on 07944 189222 or email her at
BURIAL IN THE CHURCHYARD Questions are from time to time asked about eligibility for burial in churchyards. Although the Rector and Parochial Church Council (PCC) are responsible for managing and maintaining the churchyards of St Mary’s and St Peter’s, control of them rests with the Chancellor of the Diocese and they are therefore managed under rules set out by the Chancellor. Anyone who was a parishioner at the time of death or who died in the parish or whose name was on the church electoral roll of the parish at the time of death has a right, subject to the availability of space, to be buried in the churchyard of either church. The PCC expects that the burial of anyone else will not normally be permitted other than in respect of someone who, having lived for many years in the parish, has been obliged by age or infirmity to live elsewhere. The PCC does not support applications to the Chancellor for permission to reserve space for future use. In each of St Mary’s and St Peter’s Churches there is a booklet containing full guidance on the rules for burials, flowers memorials etc. The booklet includes guidance on the particular arrangements for cremated remains.
BOXTED WI Members and some of their children were very grateful for the use of a beach hut at Frinton on their summer outing. Dry weather, lots of activities on the beach (including a somewhat bracing swim on the part of a number of members) and of course plenty of tea and edible delights to finish made for a truly “Grand Day Out”.
