1 October 2016 Newsletter Club News. Well everyone Marilyn is away overseas at the moment so you have me (Bron) doing the newsletter, so I hope I can do it justice. Marilyn is a hard person to live up to!! We have several people that have either just gone overseas (Marilyn for a river cruise, Jill for a conference in Montreal after some time in Hong Kong.) and others who have just returned (Leigh who visited several European countries). Now we expect to see some amazing photos from these trips. For the rest of us stuck at home we had to make do with a trip into Melbourne, last week. Nathan, Andrea, Christine and myself braved the weather to take some shots along Southbank. We enjoyed dinner at the Crown foodhall. As it was still raining when we came out of Crown we called ot quits and vowed th return another night. Newsletter.indd 1 3/10/2016 9:59 PM

September Competition Results.

This month’s judge was Deborah Mullens, a distinguished photographer who has won several awards.

Deborah didn’t award many honours but provides us with plenty of constuctive feedback, helping us to find ways to inprove our photography. Deborah bought along some of her award winning images as well as books that showcased her photography. Deborah in showing us her images also showed us what a difference different papers can make to an image.

Thank you Deborah.

The books were printed through www.photobookshop.com.au They are situated at 239 Separation Street, Northcote Victoria 3070.

Keep an eye out for specials!!!!!

Hints for Landscape Photography1. Maximise your Depth of Field

The simplest way is to choose a small Aperture setting (a large number) as the small your aper-ture the greater the depth of field in your shots.

2. Use a Tripod

As a result of the longer shutter speed that you may need to compensate for the small aperture, a tripod will ensure that your camera remains still. Also a cable or wireless shutter release can assist in extra stillness for your camera.

3. Look for a Focal Point

All shots need a focal point and in landscape this could be a building/ structure, a striking tree, a boulder or rock formation, a silhouette etc.Think about where you place the focal point. The Rule of thirds is an option.

4. Think Foregrounds

Place points of interest in the foreground, this gives a way into the image and creates a sense of depth in your shot.

5. Consider the Sky

A dominant forground or sky can stop you image from becoming a mundane shot. If the sky is boring then reduce it to upper third ( but make sure foreground is interesting). If sky is dramatic then lower the horizon. Use post production or filters to enhance the sky.

6. Lines

Foreground can lead you into the shot but DON’T FORGET leading lines, they will give depth, scale and can also be a point of interest.

7. Capture Movement

Where landscapes can be calm and serene, they can also capture movement like the wind in trees, birds, waterfalls and even moving clouds (this can create drama). A longer exposure is needed in these instances so either use a filter or shoot in low light.

8. Work with the Weather

Look for variations in the weather not just bright sunny days. Look for storms, wind, mist, dramatic clouds, sun shining through dark skies, rainbows, sunrises and sunsets.

9. Work the Golden Hours

The Golden Hours are around dusk and dawn due to the golden light that comes at that time. The angle of the light can also impact a scene with interesting patterns, dimensions and textures.

10. Think about Horizons

* Is it straight?* Where is it compositionally? Are you working with the rule of thirds for your horizon?

11. Change your Point of View

Look around don’t take the standard shot, go for a walk, get down low or go up higher.
