Having gone through the intense exam period and a short break of 2 weeks, CTCA welcomed a new semester on 13th of July. We thank God for granting us 6 new stu-dents this semester. They are David Chen, Sam Lin, Simon Xian, Wally Wang, Jessica Zhou and Silvia Tsang. These new students vary in age and back-ground as well as the ministries they are involved at church. Yet they all have the same calling from God and they are of the same heart to serve God. By God’s miracu-lous leading, they laid aside their work and

adjusted their life priorities, making time especially to study at the theological col-lege. Amongst the new stu-dents, David Chen is a dea-con from the West Sydney Chinese Christian Church. Before he came to the col-

lege, he was very accomplished in his real estate career and involved actively in both the church and several Christian organiza-tions. When he sensed God’s calling to

leave his job and study theology full time, he shared and prayed with his loving wife. Hus-band and wife are of one flesh and that a decision made from the same heart is pleas-ing to God. As his wife prayed and thought for some time, she became very firm and supportive. The Chinese always say “when husband and wife are of the same heart, such power could cut through all kinds of

difficulties.” Therefore, David is able to devote himself to full time study with no reservation. Jessica Zhou is from Wesley Mission Chinese Congregation. Although she is unable to study full time at this time, she is willing to study part time first.

Apart from the six new students, there is also a transferring student, Sophie Sun. Whilst other students are still preparing themselves for future ministry, Sophie has served as a missionary overseas for a few years already. She is now recuperating physi-cally, as well as recharging herself with further studies with the aim to return to

the mission field in the fu-ture. We as the college sin-cerely wish all 7 students the very best in their studies. We pray that God will grant them wisdom and a humble and teachable heart so that they will not only grow in

knowledge and truth, but also be formed and renewed in their life character to be-come God’s good and faithful servants.

Sophie Sun

Thanksgiving We have accepted 6 new degree course

students and one transferring student in the 2nd semester.

Our College Mission Week was com-pleted smoothly on 5th July. The team of 8 (including the Principal and 7 stu-dents) mainly observed and learned about the ministry of the Canberra Chi-nese Christian Church and also visited the Canberra Austral Asian Christian Church. They were enriched by the experience.

FOREWORD: CTCA always has a wholistic approach in equipping the students for min-istry which involves three elements – aca-demic, spiritual and character for-mation. Henceforth on every Monday, the whole college will spend an hour in chapel service to renew our strength before the Lord. On 13th of July, the first day of the second semester, we are very thankful to have our Principal Emeritus Rev. Dr. Peter Wongso to speak at the chapel service. As a servant of more than 60 years of experience, what message would Rev. Dr. Wongso bring to the whole college?

Having spent time in prayer, Rev. Dr. Wongso felt moved to share a message on self-reflection which he wrote for himself in 1958 when he went back to teach at his al-ma mater Southeast Asia Bible Seminary. There was no difficult theological theory in his message, instead words evolved from his heart. Below is an outline of Rev. Dr. Wongso’s message:

A. Self-reflection in spiritual life (1) How is my relationship with God? (2) Am I still firm in my commitment to God? (3) Do I still have the passion for God’s words? (4) Am I being more and more casual in keeping the truth? (5) Whom do I rely on when en-countering difficulties? (6) Am I making re-gression in trusting God?

B. Self-reflection in relationship with the opposite sex

For the marrieds: (1) Am I still faithful to my marriage vow? (2) What distance should I keep with the opposite sex? (3) Do I have romantic feelings in secret in dealing with the opposite sex? For the singles: (1) Am I eager to get married when I’m getting on age or am I willing to wait on God’s timing for me? (2) when deal-ing with pastors and other believers, do I have inappropriate feelings or thoughts? (3) is there any homosexual inclination or that seeking soul mates in friends of the same sex?

C. Self-reflection in position and spiritual gifts

(1) When there’s imbalance between posi-tion and spiritual gifts, what is my inner feel-ing? Do I accept or feel disappointed or struggling? (2) If my spiritual gifts are greater than my position, do I seek inappropriate means to go higher in rank or wait patiently

Self-reflection on A Minister’s Life and Ministry

until time is right for things to fall into places themselves? (3) When spiritual gifts are greater than my position, am I willing to work in unity with others who are in high position yet lesser gifted? (4) When working with those who are both great in spiritual gifts and position, am I eager to gain higher position and greater spiritual gifts quickly? (5) Do I use my spiritual gifts in serving God alone, or for the purpose of going up higher in position? (6) Do I endeavour to use my spiritual gifts for the praise of men or for God to exam quietly?

D. Self-reflection in financial matters (1) Does financial reward become utmost important when considering a ministry posi-tion? When I say that I need to pray to seek God’s will and guidance, do I really mean it or it is only an excuse? (2) Do I care more for those who give me more gifts, and care less for those who give me less or none at all? (3) When the church arrange accommodation for me, do I prefer to live in an upper class area or happy with a lower one? (4) When salary is not enough to keep up with daily expenses, do I put my hope in windfalls or express my needs to believers who are rich? (5) When salary is abundant or insufficient, do I still keep up with my tithes, or do I fol-low the lead of the Holy Spirit to keep offer-ing as my top priority? (6) When handling public funds, or offerings from believers, am I faithful in handling the sums and leave them with the church or do I secretly make use of them for personal means?

E. Self-reflection in relationship With co-workers

(1) When in the position of a senior pastor, do I arrange the co-workers according to

their gifts and abilities, or because of per-sonal relationship such as fellow students, relatives, coming from the same hometown? When new co-workers have gifts and knowledge greater than the sen-ior pastor, am I willing to accept his/her suggestions? (2) Do I build relationship with co-workers by position and power, or do I also take into consideration their spir-itual maturity, integrity in character, skills in inter-personal relationships, harmony with their families? (3) When co-workers preach badly, fail, sin, and are under attack by others, what principles do I use in han-dling such cases? (4) When arranging for co-workers’ financial needs, do I follow the rules or by personal relationships? (5) When children of co-workers are many, smart, capable and accomplished, and yet my own children are of no use and unac-complished, how do I feel in my heart? Do I complain to God, complain being less fortunate, then dislike the children? (6) When co-workers have more gifts and more opportunities of development than me, do I feel oppressed and therefore form a negative self-image?

F. Self-reflection in preparing sermons

(1) How much time do I put into preparing sermons for every Sunday? (2) How do I feel about preaching on Sundays? Bur-dened, painful? Or joyful and thankful? (3) Am I faithful in proclaiming the truth of the Bible? Or am I just borrowing theories of the theologians, or do I tell stories unrelat-ed to the Bible to attract people? (4) Do I feel more and more passionate in pro-claiming the truth of the Bible, and there-fore putting into more effort to think and study, or that I just tend to read more ser-mons written by people known for their academic achievements and therefore throwing more weight into my academic studies in the sermon? (5) Do I prepare the sermon by pondering more on biblical truth, praying and seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit or by reading more of ser-mons written by well-known people? (6) Once the sermons are completed, do I keep the scripts for future reference or just throw them away? Do I have a record of my yearly preaching for reflection in the future?
