Recap. Ch. 7:1-8 God has a plan for His people Israel. The judgment on Jewish people has two purposes. 1. To punish them for the rejection of Messiah 2. To get them ready for the coming of the Messiah At the end of sixth seal before the seventh seal is opened, we see a window or pause (7th Ch.) and then the seventh seal . • This gap between the judgment shows the grace of God. • Writer of the book John saw the first vision V 1-8 a scene on the

earth. The second vision V 9-17 is a scene in heaven. • The first vision reveals 144,000 representatives of the Godly

remnants of His nation, the second vision is about the great multitude of martyrs who are in heaven, those are the ones who died for their faith from every kindred, tongues and tribes.

• The first vision is Jewish, the second vision is gentile. • The first vision is the sealing of the servants on earth and the

second vision is the glory of the saints in heaven. 2

Recap. Ch. 7:1-8 • In Ch7, V1 (Read), the four angels are standing at the four

corners and holding the four winds. • There comes the fifth angel ascending form the east with the

seal of the living God. • The message of the fifth angel is this – you may not allow the

judgment to come upon the earth until the 144,000 children of Israel are sealed.

Also we saw: • What is the seal? • Who are these 144,000 sealed? • Why are they sealed? (Protection, Power & Promise) • Message: Even in judgment God is merciful.

Ch. 7:9-17 • This passage has all the encouragement in it. This is a final state

of the blessed dead. • The phrase John uses here is “every nations and tribes and

peoples and tongues”, 5:9, 11:9, 13, 14 & 17. • As John had been in many cities he was familiar with the living

of cosmopolitan cities. Who are these people? • The multitudes are not the church. • Church got there between Ch. 3 & 4. • V 13&14 - Greek idiom “Sir though knowest” means I don’t

know. John knew several of the church people, but he says I don’t know.


Ch. 7:9-17 • Diff. between this group of gentiles in Ch7. and the believers

gathered in Ch.4 1. Church is kept out of the tribulation, but this group came out of

tribulation 2. Church in white raiment(Ch. 4:4), but this group in white robes 3. Church is seated around the throne(Ch. 4:4), these people are

Standing 4. Church has crown (Ch. 4:4), these are uncrowned 5. Church harps, and vials (Ch.5:8) these are carrying palms 6. Sing a new songs (Ch.5:9), these are crying out of a loud voice. 7. There is no one single group that has everybody in it. There are

different groups gathered at different times and they all come together at the end of the book and we go into eternity as one big family.

Jews are there sealed and kept ready on the earth, the church is there in heaven, persecuted souls under the altar, now this groups of multitudes of saints the gentiles those who have been saved during the tribulation. <<Explain how the Jewish evangelists conducts gospel meetings and crusades, gentiles are saved and martyred by the antichrist>>


Ch. 7:9-17 In fact what is going on here is the fulfillment of the prophecy, Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. We need to straighten out something here. • As preachers use this today, it is not a condition for the rapture to

happen. • There is not one thing that is yet to be done until the eminent return

of Christ, the Rapture. • There is no condition that needs to be fulfilled for the rapture to take

place. (Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. )

• The condition that Gospel must be preached to all of the creation is the condition not for the rapture but for the second coming of the Lord.

• We see this prophecy getting fulfilled here. The Gospel of the kingdom is preached by these Jewish evangelists to every nation, tribe, tongue and people. Here is the fulfillment of the prophecy.

Ch. 7:9-17 Lets us look at these multitude and see what we can learn today. 1. Notice their status, the status of them before the throne in

heaven - they are standing 2. Salvation of the multitude in heaven, V 7:14 they washed their

cloth and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. V6:11, white robes were given….(read)

• They have been washed and clothed through salvation in the righteousness of Christ, or they have clothed themselves in the righteousness as believers, inward and outward righteousness.

• Greek “Robes of white” – tas stolas tas lukas. They are in white stole. Stolas is a word that refers to an outer garment for dignity, grace & beauty.

3. Their safety –1. Palms in their hands – Feast of Tabernacles, Jews will live in the booths carry palm branches to remember their deliverance from the captivity in Egypt. When the people came out of Babylonian captivity.


Ch. 7:9-17 John 12:12,13 – They thought they were celebrating getting rid of Roman dominion. Those who are in heaven are celebrating the joy of coming out of tribulation. Nehemiah 8:15-17 there was very great gladness. 2. V 7:15 God will dwell, He spreads His tent around them, God’s shepherding, sheltering care is pictured in this phrase. 4. The singing of the multitude(Read7:10-12)(the longest doxology) These great multitude is singing praise to God for their salvation. They are worshiping God because they conquered by the power of Christ. William Barclay explains what kind of deliverance these people are experiencing. <Read> They went through it all. Ch. 7:9-17 5. The service of the multitude in heaven V 7:15 1. We are going to worship. 2. We are going to serve day and night. • In the OT the privilege of serving God was reserved only to Levites

and the priests. • When the gentiles were on the earth they were not allowed inside

the temple. But, now in this temple in heaven, they gladly engage themselves in serving God almighty day and night.

• They will not become tired, they won’t need rest, they will not need sleep.

• Some people may not understand serving God. The greatest joy one can have on this earth is serving God. What a joy that day will be when we serve the Lord day and night.

• This flesh doesn’t allow me to serve the Lord to the extent I want to serve Him.

• But once we are out of this limitation, we serve Him eternally. • More than everything the Lord dwells there.


Ch. 7:9-17 6. Shepherding of the multitude in heaven (V7:16-17) Psalm 23 , Isaiah 49:10 • Antichrist starved them, waters turned to blood so they

couldn’t drink. Now the Lord is making sure that they will never hunger again and thirst again.

• During the time of the judgment, there was a tremendous amount of heat produced due to different types of judgment also the atmosphere was changed so that sun’s rays fell directly on the earth as the protective layers are removed. Now the sun will not strike anymore and nor any heat. It is all gone.

7. God shall wiped away every tear from their eyes. • Sometime we say that there is no more tears in heaven. • There is going to be tear in heaven, if not what God is going to

wipe away? • In fact, there will be tears in the eyes of Christians. • Two times we read God will wipe away tears in heaven.


Ch. 7:9-17 Two times our tears are wiped away One in V7:17 another one in V21:4 Context of wiping away of tears is this. There are two judgments going to be: One:V21:4 , Great white throne judgment, any one who is not found in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire. God is going to wipe away the tears finally after the judgment once for all. But that is only after the judgment. Two: V 7:17 God is going to wipe away their tears just after they escaped the tribulation by sacrificing their lives. Know this: While tribulation is going on in earth, every raptured believer is going to be judged in heaven. Everyone is going to stand before the judgment seat of Christ to give account for every work we have done in our flesh. (2 Corinthians 5:10).


Ch. 7:9-17 There are no tears in eternity, but there are tears in heaven. You may ask why we are going to cry in heaven? We are going to cry for two reasons 1. We are going to cry for the life that has been wasted on the

earth. – What a rebellion to say that I will get saved when ever I want – What a terrible thing to waste a life and tell the Lord I will serve you

when I settle every need of my family.

2. We are going to weep during the great white throne judgment seeing unsaved people going to hell. Some one may weep as seeing his or her own spouse going to hell, someone else may be weeping because of parents going to hell, etc. etc.

God has to wipe that tear away otherwise eternity will not be that one what it ought to be.


Ch. 7:9-17 Some one may say that I will get saved during the time of tribulation and along with the great multitude I will reach heaven. I want to enjoy even the last minute of my life on earth.

Someone else may say that if rapture happens then I believe what you say is right and I will get saved during the revival in the tribulation period. Remember we don’t make this rule, because God has already made this rule.

Multitude they are saved during the tribulation period are not the people who had opportunities to receive Christ during their lifetime on earth. Read 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12

Anti Christ is going to perform miracles, men and women who knew Gospel are going to believe in his lie as God sends a strong delusion upon them. There is no second chance! This is the day of salvation!! It will be too late after the rapture!!!

Ch. 7:9-17 The greatness of this chapter is not the discouragement, but it is an encouragement that God meets all their personal needs as they went through the tribulation.

It is not that God is waiting to do that only during tribulation.

He does that even today, He wipes our tears even today, but not permanently.

In the midst of the tribulation He wants to have a ministry of encouragement today. In the same time, Let us not waste anymore of our time! Let us not wait to save the loved ones!! Knowing that there is no second chance!!!
