Our redevelopment of the kids pool and ramada area is complete and awaiting city permit signoff. This should take place within the week and our attractive and functional new pool ramada and seating area will be open for everyone to enjoy.

We removed the old seldom-used kids pool and filled it in. The old, tired-looking ramada was removed and a new one was built with fans and lighting. We added pavers so that the entire new area matches the rest of the pool. This opened up the space allowing for additional seating and two gas barbecue grills. We also added a beautiful fire pit overlooking the lake providing a comfortable, cozy conversation area.

The area is accessed through the pool; no reservation necessary. The gas barbecue grills are available for use on a first come, first served basis. I hope you enjoy the Lakes' newest addition to the Beach and Tennis Club and plan on spending lots of time making use of our beautiful pool this season.

Our next big project to rebuild the basketball court is underway. We have started the demolition of the old court and a new post-tension slab will be poured next week which will have to cure for a month. New striping, and new hoops and backboards will be added to complete the project. Estimated time to completion will be middle of June.

I have had many enquiries about what is happening with the Granada Lakes apartment complex on the corner of Westshore and Southshore. They began their additions over a year ago, but had major contractor problems and the owners took the contractors to court which held everything up. A new contractor has been hired so cleanup and construction will be starting up again shortly.

I have requested that they add a screen to the

fence line to cover the construction debris and

give us a cleaner look as we drive by.

Our weather is perfect and I hope everyone

is getting out and enjoying our beautiful

community. We have two wonderful outdoor

events this month: First the Spring Fling in the

large park with a great band, Rock Lobster, and

our annual Easter Egg Hunt and Breakfast. I

hope to see many of you there!

If you have any questions or concerns, don’t

hesitate to call me at 480-838-1023.

Lakes Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Every year, the Lakes Activity Committee puts on an egg hunt for kids, so bring the little ones to the Lakes Beach and Tennis Club for our annual Easter Egg Hunt at 9 AM on Saturday, April 20.

Those 2-4 years will gather eggs in the Kids Cove at 9 AM and, of course, there will be a special appearance by the Easter Bunny.

Children 5-7 years will hunt on the west side of the Large Park at 9:15 AM and should line up at the black gate just outside the gym.

Those 8-12 years will hunt on the east side of the Large Park and should line up by the

double black gate down by the dumpster at 9:15 AM.

After the hunt, we will be serving breakfast in the multipurpose room for egg-hunters and their families.

Bring your pretty baskets and cameras and bring your appetite as well.

Treat yourself to the relaxing atmosphere of this beautiful lakefront salon.

There was also a drawing for some “lucky

losers”: RaeLynn Herbert, Meg Sanchez, and Robert Piltch.

club park. Thank you to Craig Whatcott and all his staff

Lakes Book ClubQuestion: What do the following books all

have in common? Year of Wonders, Caleb's Crossing, March, Nine Parts of Desire, People of the Book.

Answer: They were all written by Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks.

We are pleased to announce that our April selection is People of the Book by this illustrious author. This

2008 historical novel focuses on imagined events surrounding the book conservator who was responsible for restoring the Sarajevo Haggadah, one of the oldest surviving Jewish illuminated texts. The story is told in reverse chronological order. The book follows the Haggadah backward in time as it travels across Europe from war-torn Sarajevo to its origins. It also explains such clues as missing silver clasps, preserved butterfly remnants, and various stains and spots which are all eventually explained as part of the manuscript's long history.

We will meet to discuss this book on Thursday, April 18 at 7:15 PM in the Clubhouse conference room. All Lakes residents are welcome to join in.

Please note that if you plan to purchase this book on Amazon, the audio version will pop up first. You will need to scroll down to find paper versions. There are plenty of used paperback versions for less than $3 plus shipping. There are also some library versions being passed around. We don't want anyone to miss out because they can't find the book at a reasonable price.

Lakes Women's ClubIN MEMORIAMMerle Fister

Our especially sweet and accomplished father, grandfather and great-grandfather, retired Colonel Merle Fister, Air Force, passed away yesterday morning, February 28, 2019 at the age of 97.

He suffered a stroke the week before and was surrounded by loving family around the clock until his passing.

Merle was one of the best of the greatest generation – a true prince of a man. He was also loved and admired in return by everyone who know him. Merle lived in the Lakes for many years and was one of the early Executive Directors of the Lakes.

We thank everyone who came to visit him in the hospital and hospice. We will announce memorial service information in the coming weeks.

The Lakes Women’s Club is open to all Women who live at the Lakes.

Our three-fold mission is to organize and promote: Social Events for the Lakes Community, Fundraisers to support our various charities, and Community Service Projects.

That also includes periodically making a gift to our own community.

The last was the dance floor in 2015, so I am proud to announce the purchase of eight Adirondack Chairs for around the fire pit in the new ramada area.

Events and projects this past year included the eighth annual New Year’s Snow Frolic, Rene Ballou Project Nite Nite, Suds n Duds, Fall Welcoming Breakfast, the annual Lakes-wide Garage Sale, two Bake Sales, the Holiday Giving Tree, Santa at Christmas Island, and the “Light up The Lakes” Holiday Luminaria Project.

Monthly we go Out To Lunch on the second Wednesday and meet for Happy Hour on the third Thursday.

Funds raised either go back into the community or are donated to charities.

Recipients in 2017 include: Tempe Leadership Program, Ryan’s

House for families needing respite care, AZ Foster Care/Child Crisis Center, Tempe Cub Scout Troops, Lost Our Home Pet Shelter, Operation Enduring Gratitude that builds wheelchair ramps for Veterans, Homeward Bound for the Maricopa Homeless, along with our annual donation to each of the 3 local schools, Fees Elementary, Rover Middle and Marcos de Niza High School.

What The Women’s Club is really all about is not only providing a sense of community, but an opportunity to give back to the community and to make a difference to those who are not as fortunate as we are.

This is what makes The Lakes Women's Club an organization to be proud of!
