  • Jubelalea festive winter aleenjoy layered flavors of warm spiciness, dried fruit and a hoppy finish. This year marks the 27th bottling of Jubelale, the first brew that Deschutes Brewery ever bottled.

This years label features an original fiber art from Lisa and Lori Lubbesmeyer focusing on a couple sledding in a shimmering

winter landscape. Creating the label artwork was a unique challenge for us. Our final design was inspired by engagement photos of our niece and her fianc playing in the snow. This had us thinking about what we like to do during the winter in Bendsledding followed by a beer sounded perfect.

During the Lubbesmeyers artistic process, they exchange the work of art, allowing the imagery to emerge spontaneously. The fracturing of shape and saturation of color occurs with each layer of fabric allowing the texture of the fiber to build the imagery as theyve responded to each others work.

We typically work in landscapes, so adding figures is something fairly recent for us as artists, said Lisa. The scene we created was meant to capture the essence of

the lifestyle we enjoy here in Central Oregon. The Lubbesmeyers gallery and working studio showcasing a range of fiber and acrylic paintings is located upstairs in the Old Mill District. www.lubbesmeyer.com

  • This photo of Mill B was taken c.1954 as mill workers are directing the logs up the log slip and into the mill. The mill workers used pikes (a long pole with a metal point and a fixed hook) for sorting and guiding logs. The primary saw used at the mill (referred to as the head rig) cut the logs into unfinished pieces. Night crews would blast the river to keep the logs from freezing together in the log ponds. Blasting kept the river open so that Bends logging mills could continue to run during the winter months. You can see the Mill B Powerhouse (now REI) in the background and the burner on the left edge of the picture. The Deschutes River is in the foreground of this photograph.

The winter of 1950 ranks up in the top five severe winters in Bends history. A blizzard hit dumping 56 inches of snow and the temperature dropped to 26 degrees below zero. Ray Miller, a Brooks-Scanlon Superintendent, was concerned with the Mill B sawmill freezing up. Miller snow shoed out to the log washer located at the bottom of Mill Bs bull chain (a very heavy chain with sharp spikes used to hold the logs on the slip as they moved from the pond into the mill). An article in the Pine Echoes (Brooks-Scanlon Newsletter) the log washer (a trough used to remove mud/debris from the log) was frozen and started up again a week later when the weather warmed up.

  • 10 Barrel Brewing Pray For Snow: This delicately balanced Strong Ale starts with dark copper color mixed with slight reddish hues and a light tan head. Big malty aroma with a Munich character give way to a slight caramel & toffee mixed with spicy noble hop aroma, all wrapped together with a medium-bodied mouth feel.

Ale Apothecary Sahalie: This mixed fermentation ale, brewed in spruce, is inspired by traditional Finnish sahti. A true work of art, Sahalie shows complex flavors that arrive from the very methods used for production. The result is the process impacts the flavor profile at least as much as the ingredients themselves.

Below Grade Brewing Dangerous Kate Black IPA: Nine premium malts and four varieties of hops are in this dark as night concoction. Prominent hop character. Like an India Pale Ale, but with moderate degree of caramel malt character and dark roasted malt flavor and aroma.

Bend Brewing Company Scish Heart Scch Ale: A Scotch Ale rich and full bodied with a malt flavor dominated by caramel, followed by a hint of roasted malts and earthiness. Scottish Heart delivers a rich, full flavored, experience without being overly sweet.

Boneyard Beer Norious: This triple IPA pours a clear amber color with a light white head. Huge grapefruit and pine aroma lead to flavors of citrus, tropical fruits and honey. Hops are abundant and explode from the glass while balancing amazingly well with the malts.

Bridge 99 Brewery Winter Trail Stout: This stout is loaded with the flavors of oatmeal, vanilla, brown sugar, dark chocolate and coffee.

Cascade Lakes Brewing Sliery Slope: This winter warmer style ale uses crystal malt and generous amounts of cascade hops to produce a well-balanced seasonal ale.

Crux Fermentation Project Freakcake: The hue of this barrel-aged Oud Bruin style beer is derived from roasted Belgian aromatic malts

and fruity esters are augmented by lemon and orange zest. For a further twist, cherries, raisins, cranberries, figs, dates and currants are added to create a mildly acidic ale.

Deschutes Brewery Jubelale: Warm spiciness and tradition grace this bold winter ale. Intriguing, layered flavors unfold to reveal chicory, dried fruit and toffee notes with a hoppy kick to finish. The deep garnet color pairs perfectly with holiday celebrations. Enjoy the 27th bottling of this winter favorite!

Good Life Brewing P Stout: A smooth bodied ale with subtle hints of roasted malt and chocolate combined with a slight coffee and cocoa character.

Juniper Brewing Company Jolly Black Ale: This low-hop, malt forward beer has easy drinkability and a unique style.

McMenamins Kris Kringle: A hearty and robust ale with bold malt complexity, a flavorful hop profile and boasts rich, toasty, aromatic and chocolaty malt flavors as its very sturdy foundation.

Oblivion Brewery Winter Oblivion: This robust, dark ale uses a variety of roasted barley styles. The copious amounts of NW hops added, balances out the deep malt characteristics.

Old Mill Brew Wrks Schizophrenic Stout: Science meets art in this glass of beautiful dark-roasted, heavily-malted beer. Creamy flavors of rich coffee in this fantastically frothy beverage.

Rat Hole Brewing Fence Post Porter: This comforting porter offers the beer drinker a soft, creamy feel to the mouth, with a hint of chocolate in the finish. This flavor profile comes from a combination of six malts, high quality chocolate and flaked oats.

RiverBend Brewing Winter Mint Black Ale: A smooth black ale infused with peppermint? Sounds absolutely divine! The brewers at Riverbend took two of our favorite things (beer and peppermint) and blended them to perfection.

Silver Moon Brewing Elf Brew: This seasons Elf Brew is a spiced brown porter that tastes of chocolate and sweet bread, with tantalizing hints of licorice root and English hops. It finishes clean with just a hint of orange peel and cardamom.

Smith Rock Brewing Company Morning Glory IPA: A nice refreshing, balanced IPA which is smooth and drinkable any time of year. Morning Glory features four different malts and a combination of Citra, Cascade, Columbus and Centennial hops.

Solstice Brewing Company Bo Stompn Stout: Deep and dark in color but smooth and full of roasted notes, this is stout brewed in the Irish style with characteristic oatmeal and roasted barley.

Sunriver Brewing Company Shred Head Winter Ale: This robust Northwest styled strong ale has a foundation packed with the finest American and European malts, and fortified with the addition of dark brown sugar. A hearty helping of Northwest and British hops bring balance to this traditional winter warmer.

Three Creeks Brewing Company Rudolphs Imperial Red: This annual holiday release is brewed with eight specialty malts. Bravo, Centennial, Crystal and Chinook hops in the kettle balance the candylike malt sweetness while a dry hop blend with Amarillo hops adds a fruity aroma.

Wild Ride Brewing Stand Up & Shout Stout: This foreign export stout features the addition of vanilla beans and 100% Kona coffee. These two ingredients bring harmony to a stout with notes of chocolate, caramel, and roast.

Worthy Brewing Company Powder Keg Winter Ale: This red-hued ale is a festive IPA with loads of hop flavor and aroma. Piney and citrusy hop character is balanced by a generous dose of crystal malts making this an aggressive yet balanced beer.

Or nearly 25 cheers for Central Oregon winter beers! We have some of the worlds best breweries right here in our region, and many have a nice seasonal beer just waiting to warm you up for the holiday season. We invite you to partake and enjoy the season by lifting your glass to craft brewing!

  • The Old Mill District plaques celebrate and honor the lives of people with a connection to Central Oregon. From a former mill worker, to a mom who walked the river trail each morning, the Old Mill District has numerous plaques on the bollards along the river trail, near the amphitheater, shops and on select benches throughout the property.

Bill Smith, developer of the Old Mill District, created the first plaque in 2003 to honor Bert Hagen, who worked for roughly 40 years at the Brooks-Scanlon lumber mill, and was a community builder. Over the last several years numerous Mill workers such as Jack Voos (Road Builder), and community leaders including Les Schwab (Tire Centers) and Gordy Robberson (Robberson Ford) have received plaques in their honor. Smith said, In essence, were telling the history of Bend through these people.

Initially the installation of plaques in the Old Mill District was an opportunity to remember those connected to the history of Central Oregon. Over

the years the plaques have become a way for families and friends to honor their loved ones, both living and deceased. On the first anniversary of Jim Wittys passing in 2008 (a well-known outdoor writer) his family and friends gathered at his plaque to celebrate his life with music and a picnic. Recently our office was touched by a woman who wanted to order a plaque to honor a dear friend in Bend who had lost her husband. Once installed, the woman traveled to Bend and together, while walking in the amphitheater, surprised her friend when they came across the plaque in her honor.

Contact the Old Mill Office at 312-0131 if interested in more information. Families have the opportunity to walk the property and find an available location. www.theoldmill.com
