WORK EXPERIENCEFreelance Work, August 2015 - PresentAfter finishing my graphic design course at Leeds City College I have started freelancing. So far I have worked with a European filter company, European Filter Solutions Ltd, in Doncaster creating a brochure for their products as well as a handout for a specific product. Working with this company was a great experience as it was a totally different area that I have not done before. I am also currently creating a branding identity for a new jewellery company in Leeds including a logo as well as designing a website for them.

February 2015 - May 2015, Freelance contract with the Mirfield WordI worked freelance at a small company that produces and publishes a free monthly magazine to 10,000 readers. In this role I was the lead graphic designer, responsible for creating and editing adverts and articles that would be put into the magazine. I recently left the job to concentrate on completing my final year in college.

October - November 2014, Work Experience at FDP Group LeedsI worked with FDP Group in Leeds, a well known graphic design and printers in Leeds for four weeks. During this time I gained an insight into the industry, seeing and learning all the techniques that are put to use in the real world. My time at this incredible business was highly rewarding to me and I feel that it has benefited me in many ways, giving me great experience and showing me how the actual graphic industry works.

September 2013 - February 2015, Banqueting Staff at Hazlewood CastleFrom September 2013 I worked at Hazlewood Castle as banqueting staff. This job really helped me deal with the fast paced side of work as I would have to make sure that everyone was served with drinks etc on time and to a high standard. This really helped me develop my customer service and people skills.

October 2012 - January 2013 & October 2013 - January 2014I have had two temporary Christmas contracts with the Disney Store. This experience was one of the most enlightening and helpful experience I have had in my career as it really helped me to deal with customers and making sure that all their needs are met and their experience is to the highest possible standard. Throughout my time with Disney my roles included working the tills, working on the floor, dealing with customer requests and restocking the store to keep it full and looking the best it could. Due to this role being over christmas it helped me learn early on how to deal with the pressure of keeping everyone happy over a stressful time and working as a team to make sure that the high standard of the company was maintained.

MODE Magazine is a magazine that I have created myself. The purpose of this creation was so that I could create magazine layouts

and front covers that were entirely original and not already taking someone’s magazine like Empire etc. The next few pages consist of

designs and front covers that I have created for the magazine.

... it’s here; and it’s a hybrid.WORDS: OLIVER MACLEAN

Page 23: Oliver Maclean Portfolio

McLaren. Many things come to mind when you think of that name, fast, furious, precious, multi Formula 1 world champions. Hybrid and

economy however are not. Welcome then, to a new generation at McLaren. A generation that is designed to evolve, a generation that is unquestionably fast.

The McLaren P1 marks the beginning of the hybrid supercar, joining the likes of the Porsche 918, McLaren have created a true beast, with an electric engine. Alongside this engine however lies a fully fl edged V8.

Using the same carbon tub and V8 engine from the McLaren 12c things are bound to be good. The new P1 combines a concept used previously by Toyota in their famous Prius, but takes it to the next level, a level that motor heads worried about the dying V8 due to EU restrictions, will be more than happy with. The combined engine pumps out an unbelievable 916bhp propelling the McLaren to a top speed of 217mph, 0-62 in just 2.8 seconds.

The thought of an electric powered car going at 200+ is something that is fast becoming a reality, a reality that super car makers are taking by both hands and proving that it is more than possible to adapt and grow with this new technology. On it’s batteries alone the P1 will go faster than a VW Golf GTI. Whilst speed is an impressive factor of the car McLaren have also made the car incredibly eco-friendly. Offering an MPG that would make most Jaguar’s and Mercedes’ feel look like fuel guzzling hyper car. Thanks to the hybrid power McLaren have been able to make an impressive 34mpg and CO2 emissions of just 192.

To make an even comparison we need to look at the P1’s main competition, the Italian bred, dancing horse Ferrari LaFerrari. Both cars offer a BHP number in the 900’s, the McLaren 917 and the Ferrari hitting 936. Both cars manage to reach around

the 220mph number. However, because of Ferrari’s refusing to use the evolving power of the hybrid engine, the LaFerrari has nearly half the MPG, 19.8. Also the Ferrari’s CO2 emissions are sky high at 330 compared to the 192 of the Ferrari.

DescriptionThe C-Thru® Separator is a unique, patented unit designed to remove solid and liquid contamination from coolants and cleaners throughout the metalworking and pretreatment industries.

Contaminants such as a hydraulic oil, way lube, and rust preventatives continually enter the metal working and cleaning fluids from the machine itself or parts being processed in the application.

Benefits• Extended fluid life• 10 times more efficient than belt, disk or

rope skimmer• Reduced waste disposal• Increased tool life• Simple and quick installation using

magnetic base• No consumables• Compact• No floor space utilised • Easy to clean• Patented, transparent design

FeaturesThe C-Thru® Separator is compact and portable with installation made simple by attaching directly to the machine utilising the magnetic base provided.

A float connected to a pump (electric or air) draws the contaminate oil from the surface or fluid. The tramp oil is separated and remains in the C-Thru® Separator where it can be drained off by opening the valve.
