The 30K paddling competition/marathon – the signature sport of the province of Agusan del Norte is now on its 10th year giving highlights to the celebration of the 10thBaoto Festival and is considered as the lon-gest paddling race in the Philippines for three-seater dug-out canoes.

The Baoto Festival, according to Festival Di-rector Edgar M. Palarca, Jr., was conceptualized ten years ago to give recognition to Agusan-ons’ forefathers. It is

an island race that pays tribute to the “baoto” or native dug-out canoes. Baoto is an old name for baroto (boat). It is the means of trans-portation of our ances-

tors in traversing rivers, oceans & lake. The celebration of the festival is set every third week of Septem-ber where level of water in Lake Mainit - fourth


largest lake in the Phil-ippines, and also the deepest lake in the coun-try is high. It is located in northeastern part of Mindanao and shared between the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte. The paddling com-petition will be held in Jabonga - one of the 10 towns in the province of Agusan del Norte gift-ed with scenery as it is embraced by mountain ranges and surrounded by lakes perfect for the said event.

This year’s Baoto festival will feature free adventure skills training such as paddling, moun-taineering, caving, snor-keling and single rope technique. The festival will be held on September 13-16, 2011with the main venue in Jabonga where lake Mainit is located while some events will be held at Kitcharao, Santiago and Tubay. Baoto races/con-tests include the fol-lowing: 150 m. double slalom – men/women,

boys/girls; 75 m. single sprint – men/women, boys/girls and the most beautiful baoto. The finale event which is the 30k paddling marathon from Jabonga to Tubay will be partici-pated in by the different municipalities in Agu-san del Norte and other provinces. I n its bid to transform the area into a major high value crop producer, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is constructing a P3.75 million asparagus packing facility at Barangay San Jose, in General Santos City (GenSan).

In a statement, Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala said that the DA wants to turn Gensan into a top producer of asparagus on top of its distinction as the ‘tuna capital’ of the Philippines. Earlier, Alcala and GenSan Mayor Darlene Antonino-Custodio led the ceremonial ground-breaking of the facil-ity that will benefit 60 farmer-members of the Greenland Asparagus Producers Multipurpose Cooperative (GAPMC), funded by the DA’s High Value Crops Develop-ment Program (HVCDP) and the National Agri-business Corporation

(NABCOR). The GAPMC farm-er-members, led by their chairman Roger Pascual, currently plant a total of 15 hectares, where they harvest an average of 300 to 400 kilos of asparagus shoots daily, which are sorted and packed in a makeshift hut. The GAPMC was organized in 2008. Pascual said most of them were for-mer contract growers of Marsman-Drysdale Agriventures, Inc. With the new pack-ing facility, which will be completed by end of October, Pascual said the GAPMC would be able to double their ca-

pacity of up to 800 kilos per day. Currently they supply major supermar-kets, restaurants, and hotels in Metro Manila. “I would therefore like to see farmers in General Santos City to improve their quality of life in the next one and a half years,” Sec. Al-cala said. GAPMC chairman Pascual said in GenSan alone there are about 5,000 hectares that could be planted to high value crops. Alcala also in-structed regional offi-cials of the National Ir-rigation Administration to undertake appropri-ate irrigation projects to


Red Cross to highlight partnership in World First Aid Day 2011 celeb

To highlight the cel-ebration, the Philippine Red Cross will strength-en its partnership with various stakeholders, in-cluding government and non-government organi-zations, to organize first aiders in the workplace. Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon said first aid is a core activity of the PRC.“We are happy to note that there is a steady in-crease in the number vol-unteer first aiders provid-ing services and training to others. Our objective is to have a first aider in ev-ery home,” said Gordon. World First Aid Day was organized by the In-ternational Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) in 2000 to heighten global

awareness on the impor-tance of first aid skills in saving lives in everyday crisis. In the Philippines, Red Cross chapters will intensify its recruitment and training in schools and barangays. The Safety Services of the PRC is in charge of securing the health and safety of Filipinos. To suc-cessfully carry out these tasks, the Safety Services program includes train-ing in First Aid, Basic Life Support – Cardiopulmo-nary Resuscitation and Accident Prevention. According to the Red Cross, their Safety Ser-vices was able to train 78,200 participants for First Aid training; 79,351 Basic Life Support train-

ing; and 553 participants for Accident Prevention course in 2010. Discussions are also in progress with the De-partment of Transporta-tion and Communications to include road safety and first aid training as a re-quirement in getting driv-er’s license. Meanwhile, PRC sec-retary general Gwendo-lyn Pang thanked all Red Cross chapters and vol-unteers in making World First Aid Day a significant event that can help save more lives. Tagum intensifies reforestation programTAGUM CITY, Davao Del Norte, Sept. 11 (PIA) — Residents here wake up to cooler mornings wrapped with thick fogs, a strong manifestation of the temperature decline in this city as a result of the massive greening and reforestation programs spearheaded by the local government in recent years. Reporting to students and stakeholders who attended an early morning tree planting drive in the Accretion Area in Barangay Pandapan, City Mayor Rey T. Uy proudly shared that the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) noted a two degree dip of the city’s annual average temperature, from 28.35°C in 2001 to 26.70°C in 2010. Data obtained from the nation’s weather bureau noted the annual average temperature of the city as follows: 28.08°C (2002), 27.80°C (2003), 27.65°C (2004), 27.03°C (2005), 26.85°C (2006), 26.54°C (2007), 27.03°C (2008) and 27.40°C (2009). This is a concrete

result of the greening programs such as the accretion reforestation jointly undertaken by the local government and the private sector, Uy said, adding that the city will intensify these programs for the benefit of both the environment and the future generation. On September 8, 2011, Uy inked another memorandum of agreement with Tagum Cooperative, Inc. to maintain the accretion area planted with fast-growing trees with a budget of two hundred thousand pesos, sourced out from the cooperative’s coffers. D e p E d Superintendent Nenita E. Lumaad, who also sits as the Chairperson of the cooperative’s Board of Directors shared that this is

part of their firm’s corporate social responsibility. Lumaad urged the students, parents and her colleagues at DepEd and Tagum Cooperative to earnestly supervise the accretion area to ensure the survival of the planted trees. By signing the MOA, Tagum Cooperative joined the ranks of the private sectors who tied up with the local government in its green brigade. Among these are the NCCC Cares and the Tagum Water District. Mayor’s Griffin Team grabs 2nd champ title in cheerdance tiltTAGUM CITY, Davao Del Norte, Sept. 11 (PIA) —The Atrium of the iconic new city hall of Tagum came to life with loud cheers and jubilant faces as the Hu-man Resource Management Office of the City Government of Tagum staged the highly-anticipated Cheerdance Competition last September 9 which ex-hibited some of the hidden talents of the city hall employees. Cluster 1 as Champion dubbed as the Mayor’s Griffin Team went home P50,000 richer as they notched its second championship title in the said competition. The cluster was composed of cheerleaders from the City Mayor’s Office both Executive and Administrative, City Treasury Office, City Legal Office, City Planning and Development Office, City Accounting Office, Civil Security Services, Special Operations and Inspectorate Units, Public Information Division, Information System and Development Unit, Tourism and Cultural Affairs Section and the Business Permit and Licensing Division. The group also clinched the Best in Costume Award. Adjudged 1st Runner Up was Cluster 2 composed of City Budget Office, Commission on Audit, City Vice Mayor’s Office, the Sangguniang

Panlungsod both Legislative and Secretariat and the Investment Promotion and Enterprise Development Section. The group went home with P30,000. Trailing behind Cluster 2 was Cluster 6 which was grabbed the 2nd Runner Up place and went home with a cash prize of P20,000. The group was also cited the Darling of the Crowd with a cash prize worth P10,000. Cluster 6 comprised of the City Health Office, CEO-Electrical Division, Special Community Development, Public Employment Service Office, CEO-Motorpool Division, CMO-Health and Sanitation Services and the Traffic Management Unit. The 3rd Runner Up was Cluster 5 which was awarded with a cash prize of P10,000. Participants of the said group came from the Division City Veterinary Office, City Agriculture Office, City Assessor’s

Taiwanese eyes investment in Panabo mariculturePANABO CITY, Davao del Norte, Sept. 11 (PIA) – City Mayor Jose L. Silvosa, Sr., gladly welcomed Taiwanese investors who recently visited the city for a possible investment ties with the local government of Panabo City. Gaudi Holdings, Inc. chairman Kuo-Kei Liao with his Taiwanese investors were in the city mainly to explore potential investment opportunities by discussing initial bilateral agreement between Taiwan and Panabo City. City Agriculturist Alejandro Mayato said that their visit focused on exploring trade and investment opportunities and they are interested about the City Government’s

policies and initiatives in the trade and investment areas. Mayato said the Taiwanese planned to purchase mariculture products for export such as bangus, grouper and high value fish to Taiwan, Shanghai and Hongkong.They are also planning to put up fish cages in the mariculture park and interested in investing coffee and corn in the city. The visitors toured the city for ocular visit on

identified sites and witnessed the big potential of Panabo City for a potential long term investment. P3M water project benefits barangay folks in PanaboPANABO CITY, Davao del Norte, Sept. 11 (PIA) – Some 254 households in Barangay Tibungol here would soon get the benefits of an adequate supply of clean and safe drinking water courtesy of a P3 million project from the Department of Agriculture. The City Government of Panabo recently spearheaded the groundbreaking ceremony on September 8 to begin the construction of a Potable Water

System (PWS) under the implementation of DA-Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) at Purok 3 in Barangay Tibungol. The MRDP project

which has a funding from the World Bank, will have a water reservoir for the constituents of the barangay. Based on the Barangay Development

Plan, Barangay Tibungol is occupied with banana plantation and all puroks use Dumoy Water. There is no other access to safe water. “The city government, the Department of Agriculture, the MRDP and the Provincial Government look forward to help the barangays and maximize this water system to be substantially taken care of by the Barangay,” City Mayor Jose Silvosa

stated. The government is ready to extend assistance in anyway and at any time, Silvosa added in his message delivered by City Administrator Henry Esparagoza during the groundbreaking ceremony. According to Barangay Captain Fernando Candol, the construction of the potable water system will greatly help his, especially in Purok 3 which has the

highest incidence of poverty. “Most of the residents in Purok 3 cannot afford to install or drill for safe water,” he said. Coop members undergo conflict manage-ment seminar workshopPANABO CITY, Davao del Norte, Sept. 11 (PIA) – Some 128 members from the different cooperatives in Panabo City participated in the two-day Conflict Management Seminar Workshop held at the 3rd floor function hall, New City hall Building on September 7 and 8.

The objective of the activity was to equip participants the knowledge and wisdom necessary in assessing risk and handle conflict situations and difficult people in their cooperative. Francisco Trinidad, PNHSTC-Ethics Committee said that he was thankful of this seminar, saying “It

NFA intensifies local rice procurement

KORONADAL CITY, Sept 11 (PIA) -- South Cotabato’s National Food Author-ity will intensify procurement of produce from local rice farmers this week.

Angelina Lucena, assistant manager of NFA South Cotabato said, besides the continuous buying of palay in Koronadal City, they will start accepting deliveries in two additional sites in the upper valley area starting September. NFA South Cotabato has already rented one warehouse

in Norala and another in Surallah towns for the produce bought from the two municipalities and neighboring places. She said the procurement team and the warehouses will be in full operational capacity this week to achieve their target 168,000 bags by the end of December 2011.

NFA buys palay at P17.40 per kilo from farmers and P17.70 from accredited farmer associations and cooperatives. Prevailing buying prices of commercial traders here range from P15 to P15.50 only. Lucena added measures to prevent scrupulous commercial

Agusan del Norte gearing for 10th Baoto FestivalAGUSAN DEL NORTE, Sept. 11 (PIA) – Preparations are in high gear for the “10th Baoto Festival 2011” which promises to surpass last year’s set of activities. The festival pays tribute to the “baoto” or native dug-out canoe which is the featured activity in the festival, the race for dug-out canoes or popularly known as the 30K Paddling Competition in Lake Mainit which is considered to be the longest pad-dling race in the Philippines for 3-seater dug-out canoes.

The Lake Mainit side in the municipality of Jabonga will host the big event with the support of other nearby mu-nicipalities namely: Kitcharao, Santiago and Tubay which are gifted with sceneries as they are embraced by mountain ranges and surrounded by the lake, perfect for the said festi-val. Other set of activities are also scheduled to be held in these municipalities. The Provincial Govern-ment of Agusand del Norte headed by Governor Erlpe John M. Amante will head the festival thru the Community Affairs Division (CAD). “All committees are set for the big event,” Agusan del Norte Pro-vincial Information Officer and Festival Director Edgar Palar-ca Jr. announced. The “baoto” (boat) com-petition shall also include

“baoto” race without an outrig-ger, regatta using only the sail made from indigenous mate-rial, and the single and double Slalom for men and women category. The most beautifully design Baoto will be chosen with a price. To create environmental awareness, the organizers will also be conducting tree plant-ing activity at the Lantawan Eco Park, Kitcharao which will be participated in by different delegations of government of-fices and different schools. Other activities also in-clude: Kite Flying Competition which is sponsored by the Pro-vincial Tourism Council (PTC) which is headed by SP Mem-ber Nieva Famador; Cycling Competition; Beach Volleyball and Triathlon. This year’s festival is promising to add more color-

ful activities to the event to lure guests and spectators from every corner of the land. Sumayajaw Dancers will be performing in the said festival coupled with fireworks display and booths of different spon-sors so you can buy food, drinks or souvenir items. The CAD is pressing for new sponsors to come aboard together with the joint support of the Provincial Government and the LGU’s that are in-volved to boost the capability of the organizers to give the crowd a show above any oth-er. Ecological balance, key to Mindanao’s economic growth and development, says Acosta

This was declared by Presidential Adviser for En-vironmental Protection sec-retary Juan Romeo Nerues O. Acosta on Friday during the closing ceremony of the 20th Mindanao Business Conference (MinBizcon) at the City Commercial Center (C3) here.
