New Horizons in the Health SciencesEmployers throughout the metropolitan regionrecognize York College as a leader in preparingstudents for careers in the health sciences.The Department of Health Sciences at Yorkoffers respected programs in environmentalhealth science, medical technology, nursing,occupational therapy, and physician assistant.Each of these degree programs combines arigorous, science-based academic foundationwith intensive, career-focused professionaltraining. The occupational therapy program,which leads to a Master of Science (MS)

degree with five years full-time study, is theonly accredited program of its kind in CUNY.And the new four-year physician assistant program is recognized as one of the region’sbest values. And virtually every student whocompletes the College’s respected pre-medprogram gains admission to medical school.

Other health-related programs, such as community health education and gerontologicalstudies (the study of aging), require less scientific training and place a greater emphasison counseling and community involvement.

Occupational therapists help people with physicallimitations perform essential day-to-day activities,such as dressing and eating. Graduates of theYork program are employed throughout New YorkCity and across the United States.

A Focus on Student ResearchThere are several reasons why York places such astrong emphasis on student research in all areas ofthe curriculum. Conducting research is one of thebest ways to understand a field of study from theinside; it’s a prime example of learning by doing, ofgaining knowledge through direct experience. Andstudents who conduct research as undergraduatesare more successful in gaining admission to graduateschool and more successful as graduate students.

InternshipsStudents in every major pursue professional andresearch-based internships at sites throughout NewYork City. These internships are often arrangedthrough the student’s academic departments.

Special facilities on the York campus enable studentsto pursue unique career-related internships. For example,students majoring in biology, biotechnology, chemistry,and various health-related fields can pursue researchinternships at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) laboratory located on the York campus. Studentswho participate in the York College/FDA InternshipProgram receive college credit and generous stipends.

Campus ResourcesThe York College Library houses more than 160,000volumes and gives you access to all the resources inevery library in the CUNY system. The MicroComputerCenter contains more than 125 personal computersand a professional staff to answer all of your ques-tions. The Health and Physical Education Complexencompasses a gym, an Olympic-size pool, anindoor track, and the Health Promotion Center. The York Writing Center provides tutoring servicesthat help all students improve their writing ability.

Cultivating High AchieversHigh-achieving, academically ambitious students at Yorkfind a wealth of opportunities to excel. Many of theseopportunities focus on funding for student research projectsand preparing students for graduate study.

The York Honors Program. The Honors program is designedto foster a love of independent learning and to prepare students for graduate study. Each student accepted into theprogram is paired with a faculty mentor, who guides thatstudent’s course selection and overall academic development.Honors students take part in small, interdisciplinary seminarsand enroll in honors sections of general education courses.

The McNair Program. The Ronald E. McNair PostbaccalaureateAchievement Program helps high-achieving students fromlow-income families prepare for graduate study. McNairScholars receive an annual stipend of $2,800 and work witha faculty research mentor who oversees their academicefforts and helps them prepare for graduate school.

Scholarship programs. High-achieving students can receive financial assistance from a wide variety of sources, including the federal and state government, CUNY, and York College Foundation. For example, the Vallone Scholarship,sponsored by the New York City Council, pays qualifiedCUNY students up to $1,000 a year for four years.

“York faculty memberspromoted freedom ofthought and inquiry.”Jeremy Weinstein ’71 | Supreme Court Justice, 11th DistrictJeremy Weinstein has enjoyed an eventful career in law, politics, and thejudiciary. He now serves, concurrently, as Supervising Judge in the QueensCivil Court and as Justice in the Supreme Court for the 11th Judicial District.

A political science major at York, he was elected as the College’s firststudent body president. In 1978 he was elected to the first of seventerms in the New York State Senate. “York faculty members promotedfreedom of thought and inquiry, which enabled me to chart my owncourse,” says Judge Weinstein. “I always knew that I wanted to go to lawschool and get involved in politics. York helped me get there.”

Nichele Manning-Andrews ’85 | Principal of Public School 138“The knowledge I gained at York has sustained me throughout my career as ateacher and administrator,” says Nichele Manning-Andrews, the principal of PS 138in Queens. “My professors pushed me beyond my comfort zone and taught me toexpect more of myself. They inspired me to become a lifelong learner—and that hasbeen the most enduring benefit of my York education.”

After completing her bachelor’s degree in childhood education at York, Ms.Manning-Andrews went on to earn two master’s degrees: one in reading educationand another in educational leadership. She taught second grade, third grade, andpre-kindergarten before going into school administration.

It was an intensiveliberal arts education with small classes and a great faculty. York gave me access to a wholenew world of ideas and professional possibilities.” A member of York’s first graduating class—and the first in his family to attend college—Hernandez went on to earn a doctorate in psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center. He began his academic career as a faculty memberat Jersey City in 1973, while still in graduate school. In 1993 he became the University’s president.

Andrew P. Jackson ’90 | Executive Director of Langston Hughes Community Library“York opened the door to everything I do today,” says Andrew Jackson, the executive director of the Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center. “York gave me a strong foundation in business administration, introduced me to the study of African-American history, and reinforced my commitment to community activism.”

The Langston Hughes Community Library is a perfect vehicle for Jackson’s commitment. In addition to offering educational programs that benefit members of its Corona-East Elmhurst neighborhood, the library serves as the Black Heritage Reference Center for all of Queens County. Among his many professional accomplishments, Jackson is the current president of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association.
