We live in a time where

access rules the day and

learners are perpetually on

line or attempting to

be (p 298)

Mobile learning (m-learning) and ubiquitous learning (u learning) nurture the digital skills required for the 21st century.

M Learning has sprung up in recent years with escalating use of handheld, portable and wireless devices by learners on the move

As a result of this revolution educational activities follows the learner, instead of the learner having to arrive at a designated place in which to acquire it. (p 295)

Mobility in India 1980 – out of 700

million people only 2.5 million had cell phones

Four decades later

July 2007 report from New York times reported that there are 230 million Americans with mobile phones, however only 32 million use them to access and browse the web.

With 3.3 billion users in the world with mobile phones and 4 billion by 2010 – mobile education becomes increasingly scalable and cost justifiable (p 298)

Pioneering teachers will look at this as a means to create interesting applications for their classes. Smart phones now include things like quick guides for chemistry, the human nervous system, cell biology and other important science areas as well as religious topics ranging from the Quaran to the Bible to gods of ancient Greece.

Mobile Giveaways in North America

2008 – Project K-Nect provides a repository of Math and Science Problems which students can solve on their mobile phones.

2008 - Abilene Christian University (ACU) gave a choice to 900 freshman students of an iPhone or and iPod Touch

ACU studied many emerging technologies and came to the conclusion that the iPhone is different (p 307)

MIT, Carnegie Mellon University and Boston College are using their technology know-how to give students to capability to check on available laundry machines

University of California, Stanford University were leaders in posting their lectures in iTunes for anyone in the world to download

Students from Montclair University can check their grades, bus schedules and dining hall menus using a cell phone.

Oklahoma Christian (OC) University announced a week after ACU that it planned to offer multiple mobile technologies – both an iPhone (or iPod Touch) and an Apple MacBook Laptop for incoming students (p307)

Japanese have ushered in a new era of learning: Some examples are

Yayoi: people are learning English podcasts and other mobile technologies (p 310); she has used CNN and Voice of America also

Mobile phones are used for reading full length novels

Mobile Suica: uses the mobile phone as transportation passes in public transportation services such as trains, buses etc.

Howard Rheingold documented Japanese stories on how people tend to share and learn using the mobile phone in his book – Smart Mobs.

Mixi is the social network - Mixi connotes “ I can used the service to mix” – grown from 10 thousand users in 2004 to more than 14 million in 2007.

In Mixi one can upload video content found in U –Tube, a footprint feature allows the user to see who has visited their page.

M-Korea: It’s a CYWORLD After All

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/79/Animated-Flag-South-Korea.gif

Koreans operate in a highly competitive system therefore gaining access to higher tier education is the ultimate goal for young people so providing equitable access examination preparation programmes as the Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) is a monumental announcement

Page 18: Opener 9- The World is Open by Curtis J. Bonk

M-Korea: It’s a CYWORLD After All

South Korea is the home to three to ten most popular blogging sites – Cyworld, Planet Weblog and Yahoo! Blog with Cyworld being the tool of choice (combines, MySpace, Facebook, personal homepages, blogging, e-portfolio, and photo sharing). In tune with the participatory learning culture. In 2005 more than 40 % of South Koreans have a membership in Cyworld (out of 49 million people).

(p313-314)

Students are using PMPs to download lecture notes, college prep tests, videos etc.

High quality college entrance TV programmes are provided on EBS (p312)

2007 – Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology annouced the development of sophisticated digital textbooks which can be inexpensively and quickly revised. It will allow students to interact with teachers at any time or location.

M- Africa: The Land of leapfrogging

Africa is in the midst of a game of leapfrog to jump over its hurdles. M-learning allows more people to join this game.

Digital Education Enhancement Project (DEEP) offers professional development for rural teachers through illustrated e-books installed in handheld devices.

To read more on DEEP project check: http://www.open.ac.uk/deep/

The pressing need for professional development of 200 000 teachers. In partial response a pilot project set up by Traxler, supports 8000 of these teachers with supplemental material in the form of SMS. University of Pretoria is uses SMS for administrative support to teachers in their distance learning programmes. M learning was expanded to facilitate students to phone in their academic questions and receive feedback via SMS.

Formal Educational opportunities for indigenous children in Latin America are bleak. – Dr. Kim’s Solution the Pocket School ($ 19 MP3 player ). A study showed that children learn to use these devices very quickly. Fitted with 512 MB to 1 GB interactive audio books are loaded which facilitate the development of literacy skills in children who would have never had access to a teacher. Printed versions of stories can be read while simultaneously listening to the audio version. (p 316-317)

21

This MP3 player contains about 350 short stories and 200 long ones

Such indigenous m-learning can fill an enormous gap in Latin America and many migrant workers in North America. (p 318)

This programme is focused on providing teachers where there are none.

M- Workers

Productive workers require performance support on the job. Learning is on demand and just in time.

IBM’s Example IBM’s four day virtual seminar which linked employees in the US, Brazil, Canada, UK, India and Australia is a good example of combined power mobile, virtual and collaborative tools (pg 320)

‘The pace of change is so rapid that entire industries change within a decade. People learn best in a continual apprenticeship where employees immediately apply what they have learned’ - Ted Hoff, Chief Learning Officer - IBM

One Laptop per Child (OLPC)

Millions of cheap laptops are being produced for children. This computer is nicknamed to “XO” as well as the Children’s Machine. It is portable, sturdy, wireless and rechargeable with a hand crank.

Purchases Italy – 50,000 (purchased for children in Ethiopia) Peru – 270000Uruguay – 1000002008 Columbia – 50000 (p321)

Ideas for the XO came from Papert’s ideas about constructionist learning. The wireless feature allows “XO” computers to talk to each other, fitted with free web brower, e-reader allows learners to explore, express, collaborate, and share information and knowledge (p 322)

Page 24: Opener 9- The World is Open by Curtis J. Bonk

24

Among the first places where the XO was tested was in Nigeria…Mrs. M a teacher at Galadima School in Aubija, Nigeria says: “ With the laptop we can say that out school is really elevated because the children are really learning more…They see themselves discovering things that they have never been doing before.”

Negroponte’s hope in all of this – World peace through elimination of poverty through education through learning

Mobility allows you to have access to learning materials at any time but there will be learning moments that will cause people to pause and appreciate these new opportunities to learn. (p 325)

Mobile and wireless learning devices:◦ brings new partners into one’s learning journey◦ Place our family and personal life more directly

into our work life◦ Open up learning to entirely new possibilities (p

Mobile Reflections

Page 27: Opener 9- The World is Open by Curtis J. Bonk

27

With an estimated 4 billion mobile phone user by 2010 - more than half of the world has mobile phones and more than 80% live in areas accessible by mobile devices – educators need to think of effective and innovative ways to design and deliver education with mobile devices

Imagine This Revolution

Page 28: Opener 9- The World is Open by Curtis J. Bonk

Professor Bonk has provided in this opener motivating success stories of initiatives take to increase learning in areas where getting to a classroom was not possible.

In addition this opener provided an awareness of mobile and wireless technologies available to support learning.

Thanks for such inspiration!
