THE CRY OF THE POOR Our Responsorial Psalm for today is Psalm 34. Our response to the psalm is: “The Lord hears the cry of the poor.” There are many ways to be poor. We might be financially poor, in poor health, poor in spirit, or someone who is troubled (Oh, you poor thing!). So which cry does Jesus hear and what does he do about it?
Jesus indeed hears all of our cries! Jesus also answers all our cries, just not always the way we want! Many times, Jesus uses others to answer the cry. Jesus uses us to respond to the cries of others. Through our Catholic Social Teachings, we are taught that we are responsible for helping others. Jesus himself told us that when we give a drink of water to someone who is thirsty or visit someone who is sick or lonely, we are doing it to HIM.
What about those who are in need of formation in their faith? We know that parents are the first and primary teachers of their children. Parents teach their children to talk, walk, feed and dress themselves, and how to live. Parents are also most importantly the first ones to teach their children about the love of God.
Just as parents team up with schools to help educate their children, they also team up with Religious Education Programs (or Catholic Schools!) to develop and strengthen their children’s relationship with God.
Here at St. Mary Star of the Sea, we are truly blessed to have wonderful Catholic school teachers and volunteer catechists who work with parents and their children as they deepen their faith. We don’t need to be lacking or poor in faith!
Next weekend, we are celebrating Religious Education weekend. We are grateful to all the wonderful, faith‐filled catechists who volunteer their time in our RE program. We want to publicly acknowledge their gift of time, talent, and treasure.
We also need the support of the parish. Next week, we will have a second collection to benefit our Religious Education program. Many families are not able to send their children to Catholic Schools for a variety of reasons. We are able to assist these families in passing on our Catholic Faith and by providing the necessary formation for our children to receive the Sacraments. We celebrate the Sacraments as a parish faith community, school and Religious Education students together. With your prayers and support, we can continue to provide for our children.

El Grito de los Pobres Nuestro salmo responsorial para hoy es el salmo 34. Nuestra respuesta al salmo es "El Señor escucha el clamor de los pobres". Hay muchas maneras de ser pobres. Podríamos ser financieramente pobres, de mala salud, pobres de espíritu o alguien con problemas (Oh, pobrecito). Entonces, ¿qué clamor oye Jesús y qué hace al respecto?
¡Jesús realmente escucha todos nuestros gritos! Jesús también responde a todos nuestros gritos, ¡pero no siempre de la manera que queremos! Muchas veces Jesús usa a otros para responder al clamor. Jesús nos usa para responder a los gritos de los demás. A través de nuestras enseñanzas sociales católicas se nos enseña que somos responsables de ayudar a los demás. Jesús mismo nos dijo que cuando damos un trago de agua a alguien que tiene sed o visitamos a alguien que está enfermo o solo, se lo estamos haciendo a ÉL.
¿Qué pasa con aquellos que necesitan formación en su fe? Sabemos que los padres son los primeros y principales maestros de sus hijos. Los padres enseñan a sus hijos a hablar, caminar, alimentarse y vestirse, y cómo vivir. Los padres también son lo más importante, los primeros en enseñar a sus hijos sobre el amor de Dios.
Así como los padres se unen con las escuelas para ayudar a educar a sus hijos, también se unen con los Programas de Educación Religiosa (¡o Escuelas Católicas!) Para ayudar a desarrollar y fortalecer la relación de sus hijos con Dios.
Aquí en St. Mary Star of the Sea somos verdaderamente bendecidos de tener maravillosos maestros de escuelas católicas y catequistas voluntarios que trabajan con los padres y sus hijos a medida que profundizan su fe. ¡No necesitamos faltar o ser pobres en la fe!
El próximo fin de semana, estamos celebrando el fin de semana de Educación Religiosa. Estamos agradecidos con todos los maravillosos catequistas llenos de fe que ofrecen su tiempo como voluntarios en nuestro programa Educación Religiosa. Queremos reconocer públicamente su regalo de tiempo, talento y tesoro.
También necesitamos el apoyo de nuestra parroquia. La próxima semana, tendremos una segunda colecta para beneficiar nuestro programa de Educación Religiosa. Muchas familias no pueden enviar a sus hijos a las escuelas católicas por una variedad de razones. Podemos ayudar a estas familias a transmitir nuestra fe católica y proporcionar la formación necesaria para que nuestros hijos reciban los sacramentos. Celebramos los sacramentos como una comunidad de fe parroquial, escuela y estudiantes de educación religiosa juntos con sus oraciones y apoyo, les podremos continuar proporcionando a todos nuestros niños.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Friday’s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday’s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus’ saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the “Day of the Dead.” Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or “bread of the dead.” A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El 31 de octubre muchos se visten de monstruos y al día siguiente, los cristianos celebramos a todos los santos. Es interesante el contraste entre los dos días. Un día recordamos brujas y zombis y al siguiente conmemoramos vírgenes y mártires, religiosos y laicos comprometidos todos con una cosa en común: su amor a Dios, un amor que se hace carne en obras de caridad y justicia. La mayoría de los santos se hicieron santos gracias a los monstruos que los rodeaban. Los primeros mártires cristianos murieron a mano de los monstruos romanos, muchos religiosos medievales se refugiaban en Dios para protegerse de los monstruos internos que los tentaban con sexo, dinero y poder. Y en América muchos como Manuel Chin Sooj se hicieron testigos de la justicia en manos de los monstruos de gobiernos injustos. Los monstruos, en fin no pueden vencer a los santos por eso en Guatemala el martirio de Manuel Chin Sooj, animó a los obispos guatemaltecos a unirse con la carta “El clamor de la tierra” a los esfuerzos de pobres en búsqueda de tierra y dignidad humana.

Baptismal Preparation Sessions are held at 7:00 PM on the 4th Monday (English) or 1st Thursday (Spanish) of the month at the rectory. Parents and Godparents are expected to attend. Please register at the rectory.
MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least 4 months in advance (prior to engaging hall) to allow for adequate preparation and instruction. Contact the Rectory for an appointment.
CONVERTS: RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults begins each year in September, reaches its climax with Baptism or reception into the Church at the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday), and concludes on the fiftieth day of Easter, the feast of Pentecost.
COMMUNION CALLS: Please call the Rectory to arrange for Communion to be brought to the sick.
SICK CALLS: For confession, anointing of the sick or in any emergency, please call the Rectory.

Las pláticas de preparación bautismal son el 1er jueves del mes (español) y el 4o lunes de cada mes (ingles), en la Rectoria. Papás y padrinos deben asistir. Favor de inscribirse en la Rectoría .
MATRIMONIOS: Los preparativos deberán hacerse al menos con 4 meses de anticipación (antes de contratar el salón de recepción) a modo de tener tiempo suficiente para la preparación e instrucción. Favor llamar a la Rectoría para una cita.
