ORMTC President’s Report March 2015

March marks the end of another year in the life of the Open Road Touring Motorcycle Club.

I would like to express my thanks and thanks on behalf of all members and ride participants to those who contributed to such a successful year.

Special thanks to the following

EJ for being the glue that holds this club together and is the consummate Secretary and Road Rider.

Ivan who is also in the “Glue” category and works so well in getting out our magazine and keeps the Website humming – well done Ivan.

Nic for being the lifeblood of the ORATS section and without who, it would not exist. No one knows the WA back roads better than Nic and I know from speaking to all those who tour with him how much they enjoy it.

Mal our erstwhile Tourmaster who loves to please and one we love to please.

Jo our Treasurer who has recently returned home to Sydney but has been a huge part of our Club for many years. Thanks again Jo.

Russell, our Vice President who sadly missed a bit of the year due to work commitments but has been a trusty member for several years now.

And to all those who organised and led rides and acted as Tail End Charlies. Special mention to Geoff Jenkinson for leading the Grand Tour over East and to the Moto GP – well done to you too Geoff.

Peter for his many interesting and humorous articles.

We are all looking forward to another

great year in this our 40th Anniversary.

Editors Report

No colour edition this year, so you will just need to refer to the online version instead. This edition, being the yearbook includes 25 pages of photos and articles reproduced from editions throughout the year. I’ve avoided republishing the biggest articles and articles from only the last month or two though. As I mentioned at the last meeting, I have reconciled the treasurer’s report with the cash tin and the bank statement that covers to the end of February. In this regard I have also been updating the spreadsheet to improve tracking of expenses since some values previously needed to be manually added to totals rather than the spreadsheet calculating them itself. Therefore, you will see two pages of treasurer’s report; one for the month and one for the year. Its election time again, and although I’m happy to continue as editor (and treasurer if need be), I’m also happy to pass the baton to somebody else if they’re interested. Ivan

Motorcycle using dedicated bus lane trial

As you have no doubt heard we recently had the announcement from our Minister for Transport Hon. Dean Nadler that we have finally got the start date for the 12 month trial of motorcycles to share dedicated bus lanes on Beaufort Street between Roe Street in Northbridge in Inglewood and on South Street between Vahland Avenue and the Freeway commencing from March 2

nd 2015.

The trial will last 12 months and will be monitored and evaluated against a range of safety and bus on-time-running criteria. It is intended that the trial will allow the Government to make an informed decision about the longer term access to bus lanes by motorcyclists.

This has been almost 3 years to get to this point since our initial meeting with Troy Buswell. We have been asked to be part of the communication plan leading up to the launch and this notice is to advising all motorcycle and scooter riders that our behaviour will be monitored by the police, Main Roads Dept. and Dept. of Transport.

It is also important to be aware that cars will be turning left from these lanes and we need to be aware that some of them are a bit stupid. We will also be letting car drivers know that they will now need to look in the bus lane for much small vehicles.

As for stopped busses I am sure we can pass a 2.4 metre bus in a 3.6 metre lane without too much bother or change into the next lane to pass. So if the trial is a success we will be pushing for all bus lanes to be made available to us but we don’t want to lose this opportunity because of bad behaviour by a few riders.

Russell’s Ruptured Rubber By Peter Hubach

It was the first club ride that Russell could attend for months. When he rode in to the McDonald's car park early on the Sunday morning, we all assumed that he had come to see us off and then go on to his weekend job, like last month. Russell remained in the car park for quite a while, adjusting some accessories on his bike/phone/computer. (It's increasingly difficult to tell them apart.)

Eventually Russell joined our group clustered around the reasonable coffee and the salt and fat offerings inside the “restaurant”. Fred blamed the club for leading his diet astray, declaring that he never ate this stuff, as he tucked in to the contents of a transparently greasy wrapping. It was a forecasted 40 degree day, which hadn't discouraged the dozen or so riders who had gathered for some South West goodness. They had been lured by the promise of new roads encompassing flatland straights and hill-billy twisties, some of the best motorcycling roads in the West, (we were told).

It started well. Mal leading the riders along the less travelled bitumen around Mundijong. This is flatland! The only obstacles to building Romanesque roads being the criss-crossing of the drainage channels that have turned what

was once swamp into paddocks. Curves here are an ornamentation, strictly not necessary but added for comic relief. Such fun! Some riders exercised their wrists, sending their motorcycles hurtling towards the horizon. The group stretched out as the riders found their own limits as mentioned in the Riot Act. Mal had chosen a Byzantine route, zigzagging across the plain, targeting at once the hills and then the coast. The road designers had eschewed the normal, aligned grid pattern and gone for a more Mondrian effect of a discontinuous mesh. This necessitated some left then right and right then left turns to get on to the next segment. Corner marking was essential.

Page 10: ORMTC March 2015

Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club March 2015 Page 10

We headed south along Hopelands Road, paralleling the Southwest Highway at about the latitude of Serpentine. It's a long, straight road. At the cross road with Lakes Road, the group was so separated that I stopped to guide the riders behind me, whom I could not see, to go straight across. Several riders arrived and continued. I waited, in the sun, there was no shade to be had. I waited. Russell and EJ did not arrive. So I rode back the way we had come to find out what had happened. There they were, pulled over in the bright morning sunshine. EJ’s BMW parked behind Russell’s green Kawasaki accessory wagon. Russell was fumbling with a gadget, isn’t he always? Winding the power lead around the body of the device with a somewhat resigned expression. It was obvious that this gadget would not be providing salvation today. Russell explained that everything had been going along just fine until he realised that the front tyre was deflating. After all, he had experience of this on the recent grand tour. His valves were fitted with accessory items that send the pressure of the tyre to another gadget on the tank. When the senders detect low pressure, an alarm sounds through the gadgets that Russell wears in his ears, over-riding the Kamahl music. As happened last time, Russell detected the low front tyre pressure by the way the bike was handling before the emergency alarm alerted him that an emergency was in fact was going on.

Page 11: ORMTC March 2015

March 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 11

On the grand tour, the deflation was caused by the sender not being screwed on to the valve tightly, thus allowing air to escape as Russell’s riding exerted more pressure on the tyre. The fix was simple, screw the sender on properly and inflate the tyre with Geoff’s handy inflation gadget. This device is useful for motorcycle tyres, air beds and sundry other pneumatic extras that riders may choose to accompany them on the lonely nights of a motorcycle tour. Russell had been so impressed with Geoff’s gadget that he bought one for himself and now was the time to congratulate himself for such foresight, or not. This time the reason for the tyre deflation was not an inadequately screwed on sender. The rubber grommet at the base of the valve stem, where the stem meets the wheel, had split. Russell demonstrated the problem by pushing the valve sideways, making the grommet gape. Roadside puncture repair was not an option. EJ looked at Russell, Russell looked at me, I looked at EJ, “Who are we going to eat first?”, I asked. It hadn’t come to that yet. EJ and Russell took out their fondle phones. Russell stroked his into life and, after a short foreplay, got down to the business of phoning his parents. There was no point in phoning his father because he doesn’t leave his phone on and sending him a text message would be a waste of time also because he can never find his glasses to read them. So, in desperation, Russell phoned his mum. He went through the usual preliminaries of assuring her that despite him being on a dangerous motorcycle ride, he was in fact OK and not lying maimed in a ditch having his eyes pecked out by crows as ne’er-do-wells de-accessorise his machine and plunder his personal devices.

Page 12: ORMTC March 2015

Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club March 2015 Page 12

Having determined that her beloved son was un-harmed but in need of parental assistance, Russell’s mum asked where he was. There then followed a good ten minutes of dialogue, I couldn’t really call it a conversation. Russell told his mum the road we were on and the nearest intersection. She didn’t believe him. She was consulting her trusty map book and there was no Hopelands Road near Serpentine. So Russell spelt out, letter by letter H-O-P-E-L-A-N-D-S R-O-A-D. No, his mum assured him, that was wrong it was not in her book. “Where in the hills are you?”, she asked. Not for the first time, Russell told his mum that he was not in the hills, but on the coastal plain, west of Serpentine.

At this point, I think, Russell almost threw his fondle phone into the paddock. Frustration gushed from Russell’s fingers into his phone. Now Windows Phone is a sensitive operating system. It knows that people hate it and would rather use Android or carrier pigeon or even an iPhone at last resort. It took umbridge and stored up its malcontent for later user frustration. Meanwhile, Russell’s dad, in the background, suggested that our location was beyond the “Limit of Maps” of Russell’s mum’s UBD. There be dragons, along with incapacitated motorcycles and one rider rapidly losing the will to live. “How much battery life have you left on your phone?”, I asked. Russell said that he always kept his phone fully charged. I could see why.

Russell’s dad took over. He and Russell discussed the various vehicles available to them to transport his bike back home. They had the towing capacity and a ute, but no way of pushing a motorcycle up into the tray. Now a motorcycle that needs to go into the back of some vehicle is like a cat that knows it has to be moved. It refuses to move under it’s own power, so has to be man-handled or picked up. Cats can increase their mass at will. So when you attempt to lift a malcontented moggie, it’s normally easy 5kg becomes at least 20kg and suddenly flesh and blood has turned to liquid mercury. The same applies to motorcycles that have to go into the back of utes. Without a ramp, it won’t end well.

Page 13: ORMTC March 2015

March 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 13

EJ had an idea! So Russell told his dad that he would get back to him when a plan had been

formulated. He hung up. EJ had already texted Mal to let him know what had happened and I

said, “Sometimes those phone thingies can be pretty useful.”. EJ took the opportunity to

berate me for leaving my mobile switched off, out of contract and in a drawer at home. “I don’t

need to service a mobile phone.”, I replied, “I make sure I ride with people who do.”. I then

asked Russell if now was a good time to tell him that Moto Guzzis come standard with metal,

sideways facing tyre valves. Apparently it was not.

EJ’s plan was to phone Mal’s wife, who obviously was dutifully staying at home, cleaning the house, baking and doing the washing up whilst Mal was out riding, and tell her what had happened and ask to borrow Mal’s bike trailer, that Mal had previously offered to any club member to use. Russell’s dad could drop by Mal’s place, which was on the way, and pick up the trailer and rescue his wayward son.

So EJ phoned Mrs Mal and went through the routine of assuring her that Mal was OK and not lying in a ditch somewhere etc. Russell tried to phone his Mum. The Windows phone had remembered his frustration and was now refusing to respond. Of course, Russell didn’t know his mum’s phone number, it was stored on the phone, so we couldn’t use EJ’s phone to call her. “Pretty useless those mobile phones!”, I opined. Russell’s grip tightened on his fondle phone and he began breathing through clenched teeth. I asked him if now was a good time to tell him that the Burgman comes standard with metal, sideways facing tyre valves. Apparently it was not.

Being a Windoze device, Russell knew a sure fire way to get it working again. He switched it off and then on again. Somehow Russell’s dad knew the phone call was for him, not Russell’s mum. He answered and after a few minutes of plotting explaining and giving directions, all was set.

We saw the headlights of Fred’s BMW before we heard the ticking of the valves. He rode up and used his years of motorcycling experience to cut straight through to the root cause of the delay. “Got a flat tyre!”, he declared. All three of us were amazed, so that was the problem! EJ had also texted Fred with details of the incident but Fred hadn’t thought to consult his phone when we failed to appear. He whipped out his phone and with furrowed brows of concentration attempted to navigate his way through the menus to see what EJ had sent him, even though his decisive intellect had already determined cause for effect and EJ was standing right next to him and could easily have told him the content of the message.

Fred said that he would collect the other corner markers and meet us at Dwellingup. As he rode off I said to Russell that Fred’s BMW came standard with metal, sideways facing tyre valves. Apparently it wasn’t a good time to draw his attention to this.

We moved the bikes into the nearest shade by the side of the road and took stock of the situation. All was sorted. Russell had a good supply of water in his jacket accessory. Russell’s dad would collect Mal’s bike trailer, drive to North Dandalup, phone Russell for directions and rescue son and his folly. I asked Russell if he was sure there would be enough man power to get the bike on the trailer. I thought EJ could stay behind and help, but Russell assured me that would not be necessary. I thought of staying too but then Russell said that he hadn’t eaten and I thought it safer to leave.

Page 14: ORMTC March 2015

Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club March 2015 Page 14

EJ and I took Lakes Road and then Mornington Road to get to Dwellingup just as Fred and the corner markers arrived. We re-grouped under the pine trees, explained everything to the other riders and then continued with the ride. At morning tea we phoned Russell and he said that his dad had just left Mal’s place with the trailer. At lunch Russell emailed EJ a photograph of the Kawasaki all tied down in the trailer.

Riding together, helping each other, using teamwork and good will to sort out what would

otherwise be difficult situations, is what being part of this club is all about, for me anyway.

ORATS February 2014 Ride - Deep South Karri Adventure Ride

Nature be my Valentine - or - Would you like flies with that?

And so we were off on the first of another year of ORAT’s adventures . After a couple of false starts with run dates, a group of 3 regulars and 2 visitors (Con and Terry) finally assembled outside Maccas in Armadale on Valentine’s Day. Dinner stop was at the Waroona hotel where a scantily clad barmaid had attracted a refined and distinguished group of local gentlemen, together with some unsavoury types from Perth mounted on dirtbikes (hang on that was us!) The cuisine was not all that distinguished, but passable compared to some of the other Friday night fare we had encountered on Friday evenings. Dennis preferred takeways but reassembled with the rest of the crew (suitably armed with takeaway drinks and ice) before we continued on to our first night’s stop on the lower Collie River below Welly Dam. I had once again forgotten to adjust my bikes headlight so the crew were treated to some excellent views of possums in the treetops on the way into our campsite, which though not totally deserted had plenty of room for the Rats to settle in for the night. Unfortunately a momentary stop to rearrange some gear on his bike saw Terry separated from the rest of the group and lost for about half an hour while Craig and Con backtracked to look for him. Reunited shortly thereafter, we settled in to beers on the jetty next to the moonlit river where we exchanged updates on what had annoyed us or entranced us about our lives as mere mortals since the last ride, till about midnight.

Fueling up at Dardanup

Page 23: ORMTC March 2015

March 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 23

Daybreak saw us breakfasted by 8 and heading back up the rough river track towards Collie. But alas the charms of that lovely destination were not to be ours that day due to Terry’s bike running low on fuel. We backtracked slightly to Dardanup and then burnt the glue off my new tyres along the Ferguson Road and then south to Boyup Brook. With temps running at a pleasant 28C, it was a great day on the road and a relaxing ride to WA’s country music capital The country music festival was on there so the main street was closed off and since we lacked cowboy hats we zipped through the town and headed south across the Blackwood River and down the gravel south toward the blessed Karri country. Down the gravel to Tone Bridge we went for lunch (great spot to stop off on your way south) and then to Lake Muir for quick stop off to admire the massive bird hide structure (only its mother could love it). The weather was getting pretty hot though by now so we found Thompson Road and shot down this gravel highway ever southwards until the road snaked its way into the karri forest.

Entering the land of the giants As we neared the south coast the gravel got somewhat gnarly round the bends (possibly due to a bit more tourist traffic) and we stopped a few times to rest our nerves. Then as the temperatures dropped down to the low twenties we sailed down the twisty bitumen ribbon into Walpole.

Page 24: ORMTC March 2015

After a quick refueling and resupply we headed to our evening lodgings kindly organised by Dennis, with some setting up swags or tents and others sleeping indoors in the luxurious cabin.

The view from our cabin

With the day’s riding out of the way we settled down for some lively chats with the exchange of ideas and experienced duly lubricated by amber fluid etc.

Swag time at Birra Burra

The next morning a couple of us went for a walk through the karri forest while the others breakfasted or recovered from the rigors of the previous evening. We

Page 25: ORMTC March 2015

headed back into the bush through Mt Frankland National Park and then north up the highway towards Manjimup where an interesting mini drama was to unfold. The Southwest highway in these parts is a magic blend of open straights and gentle sweepers interspersed occasionally with undulating twisty sections through the karri valleys. We were just starting to enjoy the road and spread ourselves out along the way when three stationary caravans swung into view (or perhaps we swung into their view). The interesting thing about this was not as some Honda Goldwing riders might think, the thrill of seeing acres of gleaming metal and plastic vanshapes, but that a considerable amount of smoke appeared to be emanating from one of them. When we pulled up we found a gaggle of bemused pensioners trying to do what they could about a bushfire that someone had started on the side of the road (possibly a cigarette butt) with buckets of water and towels etc. Enter the marvelous ORATS’ fire fighting team led by “Captain Craig”, “Smokey Nic” and “Terry the Terrific” who quickly put a firebreak around this massive (3 metre diameter) conflagration while “Daring Dennis” roared off into mobile phone range to call the authorities. After making sure the site was safe we headed on up the road to Manjimup where we were greeted by the heartwarming sight of blue flashing lights, with the police apparently having pulled up a motorcyclist for some indiscretion (but no names mentioned Dennis!). The rest of the trip was fairly uneventful, with a short stop for lunch in Bridgetown and then a fun fang up through the pine forests round the back of Greenbushes and Balingup and then Brookhampton and Fergie Valley. We said our farewells in Waroona and headed home to the hum drum and normality of life in the burbs, with our wings clipped and our heads and bodies shrunken back to normal size as we re-entered the metro area at Armadale. Cheers and see you on the next run. Nic

ORMTC AWARDS NIGHT 2014

The Awards Night has come around, another year done and

dusted…….where did that time go??!!

Firstly, a big thanks to Fred for organising the venue again this year

and a huge thanks to all those that were able to be part of our special

night…..wouldn’t be the same if you weren’t there!!!

Drinks, chit chat,

catching up with the

goss – you know

stuff other than

who’s riding

what!!!

Photos of events

from throughout the year were running at one end of the eating area but

it seemed like the social interaction was too much of a distraction and

folk chattered on until dinner arrived.

For most the meals arrived very soon after ordering except for Eric’s

wife - whose name must have been Hans for the night!!! – as she still

hadn’t got her meal even after the last to order had theirs delivered.

When this was brought to the waitress’s attention, many apologies and

a prompt serving of the meal ensued with the cost deleted from the bill.

Page 27: ORMTC March 2015

March 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 27

Once the meals had been

finished and cleared away,

it was time for the games to

begin. Fred and his girls,

Kaylee and Bridget, had

created a picture quiz that

taxed the memory banks. Pictures of town specific iconic buildings

from around country WA, that had all of us scratching our heads

and muttering comments like, ”Whaaaaaat…where is this?” and

“Oooo, oooo, I know this one……I think!!!” When the answers were

read out, there were head slapping moments but an eventual winner

was announced. Having worked in the country and been on many of

the Club rides, also being a fervent photographer must have given him

the advantage, so it was no surprise that Ivan won the Iconic Town

Picture Quiz.

Members were then

encouraged to get up

and move around,

mingle, mix and find

others who were born

in the same month as

themselves. The entire

group was then split

into 3 relatively equal groups to play a game of Concentration.

Photos of 29 different motorbikes had been cut in half, the idea being

ORMTC RIDE REPORT SOCIAL RUN 22

nd June 2014

Social Run with Fred and “Roo Boy” Mal. Knowing to allow one hour from Mosman Park to Stratton it was with some relief to see no rain about at 7.30am. No rain, that is, until 30 seconds into the ride to our start point. Steady soaking rain followed me all the way until about 5 minutes before arrival. Winter! Eight riders turned up for this Social Run – Fred, Mal, Mal’s brother Steve, Peter, Geoff, Russell, Hans and the almost late Ivan. We headed for breakfast at Toodyay along Campersic Road into the hills at Brigadoon. Both Hans and I spotted a group of three small roos near the top of Campersic Road, but little did we think they would have the temerity to jump out in front of our Tail End Charlie Mal. After travelling along Connemara Rd through to O’Brien Road we reached the

turn off to Toodyay Road where we stopped for a stretch and to allow everyone to regroup. Ivan, Geoff, Hans and I waited for at least 15 minutes in misty rain before we thought something may be amiss. Ivan volunteered to head back to see if there were any problems. No sooner he left that Mal and the others turned up with Mal sporting some very nice bright blue taping holding his headlight fairing together.

Page 29: ORMTC March 2015

March 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 29

One of those pesky roos had indeed jumped into the path of Mal’s bike whilst travelling at about 70 ks. Luckily for Mal it wasn’t a large animal and he was OK, but the same couldn’t be said for the fairing. After telling us all the story Mal declared it was time to head off for breakfast where he’d very much prefer a stiff drink to a coffee! A very uneventful dry and

sunny ride into Toodyay followed. We had breakfast at the Wendouree Tea Rooms where Ivan had taken us only a couple of weeks before. We first tried the Victoria Hotel which had a nice dining room all in readiness but sadly the cook was out shopping! We came home by the tried and true Julimar Road and Chittering Valley Roads, and I must say the green scenery was just stunning. Another coffee and orange juice stop was held at Golden Grove Café and Orchard where some of us bought some very nice looking home-made sauces and preserves. Our short and sweet ride ended at

Bullsbrook from where riders headed

in various directions and routes

home.

JULY 2014 CLUB RUN REPORT

WET AS SHAGS Yes, that’s right, this was a wet one. Riders arrived in cloudy but clear weather to Macca’s Armadale at the allotted time, enjoyed a nice warm coffee and maybe a Bacon and Egg muffin or two before we grouped, riot acted and set out for a nice Sunday ride. Riders were Fred (Leader) with Kayley as pillion, Robin (TEC), EJ, Peter with Nancy as pillion, Russell, newcomer Wayne, and life member Hans. We headed south along SW Highway to Byford and then into Soldiers Road (luv that name) heading towards Mundijong. In the distance we could see black skies and sheet lightning. My thoughts turned to our new rider Wayne who turned up in the most meagre of attire for a winter run - jeans and a light leather jacket. Sure enough we eventually caught up with the black skies and a very heavy dump of rain. So concerned was I for Wayne I took a small detour off the main drag in Mundijong to find some shelter. We asked Wayne if he was OK and would he like us to stop, I could see he was already soaked through. Now here was a brave soldier, he insisted we continue on, it’s only water he said. The rain abated when we got to Del Park Road and it was quite pleasant through to Dwellingup where we stopped at the corner café for more coffee, and cake. The mood within our little group was definitely one of , “let’s just take our time here and relax, what’s the hurry”. Those of us with good wet weather gear were fine, others were starting to leak a little, and some were soaked through. Kayley complained her boots were leaking,

Page 33: ORMTC March 2015

March 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 33

and it was then I noticed she’d worn her fashionable jean boots instead of Mum’s water proof riding boots which were made for the job. No sooner we ventured out of that warm and cosy café the rain started at us again. So it was off towards Nanga Brook Road and down into Waroona. Always a great ride that, even in the rain. And so it was for the rest of the day that we had rain then dry then rain. Ivan sent me a text to say he wasn’t coming “on account of the weather” – smart man that Ivan!

We travelled down to Yarloop then back northwards via back roads including EJ Highway where the trees are friendly. Get her to explain that one! We arrived wet and cold at Ravenswood Tavern at noon. We traded our booked table in the cool restaurant for something far more inviting in the lounge with a big circular wood fire. A good selection of meals for lunch are on offer at the Ravenswood. We had riders taking off boots, gloves, socks, neck warmers etc and placing them around the fire to dry. We also had a fine line up of helmets adjacent to rest rooms, I’m hoping photographer Pete sent one through of that. After a very pleasant gathering for lunch we were back on the bikes just in time for it to start raining again. We finished our ride on the corner of Kargotich and Thomas Roads from whence everyone headed off in all directions for a warm and dry home.

Mal ‘n’ Russell’s Social Ride 24

th August.

The weather held out for us & although a tad nippy at first, It turned Into a bloody nice day for a ride. The meeting place was Maccas In Kelmscott & we had 10 people turn up, even Harry, who I don’t think has done a club ride since his wedding 12 months ago.

EJ’s boss turned up on his Harley, we tried to get some dirt on EJ, but he remained tight lipped, (shoulda given him some dirt) j/k. Dennis turned up as we were about to depart, said he wasn’t feeling 100% so was unsure If he would last the whole ride. We waited a few extra minutes so Dennis could fuel up, then headed off through Roleystone onto Brookton Hwy & headed for our first stop at Beverley. I stopped at the Beverley turn off to regroup & noticed that Dennis was not amongst us, to which Russell told us that

Dennis had turned back, not cause he was sick, but had left his glasses back at the Servo.

At this point I Informed everyone that If they wanted to go ahead of me fine, just wait at the T junction at the end.

A few klms down the road

this Kwaka went flying

past me, not bad for

someone who didn’t feel

well, but after a few more

klms he slowed & flagged

me past, saying he didn’t recognise me & was trying to catch the leader.

Some refuelled, then we went for a coffee at the local café, & perused some vintage motorcycles parked out front, & started discussing the rest of the ride, which was originally going through York back to the Mundaring Hotel. A few people commented on a nice road from Beverley that takes you back to York Rd, which I had never heard of, then It was asked “Is it the Mundaring Hotel or the Mundaring Weir Hotel?” To be honest I only knew of the Mundaring Hotel, had never been to the Weir hotel, so It was decided that the rest of the ride would be completely different to what was originally organised. So we headed off down Talbot Rd, & I must say I was Impressed, the road was In

good condition, went through some

lovely scenery & ended back at the

Mundaring Weir Hotel, that I had

ridden past thousands of times &

didn’t even know It was there. Goes

to show, you learn something new

every day.

ORMTC SOCIAL RUN MARCH 2015

I’m a great believer in shorter Social Runs which finish by noon. This gives members a chance to do something else on the Sunday afternoon of the ride. Trouble is the best laid plans can sometimes be thrown into disarray by the silliest of minor hiccups.

Such was the case last Sunday. Fourteen bikes turned up on a fantastically cool and invigorating summer morning to the Dome Café in Kalamunda. Must say

they serve great coffee there in a most comfortable setting in the old Kalamunda Police Station.

At 8.45am Fred read the riot act and put some emphasis on corner marking. Unfortunately though, as soon as

we left the Dome we mingled with other non- club riders who sadly confused a couple of our group. Instead of following our route some followed the non-club riders who were going in an entirely different direction.

Page 43: ORMTC March 2015

March 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 43

Corner marking! – it’s a great system but it sure does breakdown as soon as one rider forgets to do it or others aren’t concentrating.

So it was that we were only 200 metres into our ride when several went straight through a roundabout instead of turning left and taking the first exit.

These things are usually recovered though, and after a delay of about 45 minutes just about all of us were back together. All of us except our most experienced Club Life Member, Hans. He was not to be seen after the first 10 minutes of the ride!

Seems he fell victim to a missing corner marker as well.

We nevertheless had a very pleasant two hour run through the hills and wended our way back to the Heritage Rose Garden Café in Carmel for breakfast about 45 minutes past our scheduled arrival, much to the annoyance of the Maitre’d who had kept a table reserved for us in the face of a very busy morning.

I feel very sorry for Dan, a new rider for the last two runs and both times he’s

either been delayed by either having to wait at a corner for at least half an hour

while a rider behind recovered from a tyre puncture or has missed a corner

marker. You’ve been unlucky Dan, please don’t lose heart, these things are more

rare than common.
