BSc (Hons) Physics - Queen Mary College, London

PhD Infrared Techniques in Studying Semiconductors, University of Essex

MA University of Cambridge

CEng Chartered Engineer

MInstP, CPhys Member of Institute of Physics, Chartered Physicist

MIFireE Member of Institution of Fire Engineers

Roy started his career in 1968 as Senior Physicist at Cambridge Consultants Limited and then in 1970 co-founded the P A Technology and Science Centre. His work included new product innovation and consultancy on company development.

In 1973 Roy was appointed Assistant Director in Industrial Co-operation in the University of Cambridge, helping to move research ideas and skills from the University into the commercial marketplace. The work involved numerous consultancy and research projects, one of which examined the scientific facilities available in the United Kingdom to Fire Brigades and the methods whereby fire officers determined supposed causes of fires.

To advise on this Roy had to find out how fire cause investigation was carried out and how it could be done better. This proved to be much more fun than what he was employed to do, and it was also clear that there was a commercial opportunity since only one major company was providing services to the Insurance and Legal sectors.

In 1976 Roy left the University to work as a private consultant, developing his fire investigation experience and techniques, and becoming involved in other incident investigations while also carrying on general consultancy work that included planning computer-controlled logistics and

warehousing facilities for a major group of companies and the development and application of various computer software packages.

As the investigation work developed the next move was to recruit good people and to set up a formal company structure, and in 1980 Roy set up R B Hawkins & Associates Limited to provide consulting scientist/engineering services particularly for the Insurance and Legal professions.

Investigations carried out by Roy have included:

•Fires or explosions in a range of premises such as chemical plant and refineries, power stations, factories and offices, warehouses and cold stores, cinemas, restaurants, pubs and clubs, hospitals and nursing homes, as well as in private dwellings

•Engineering failures and personal injury ranging from refinery and smelter malfunctions to supermarket 'slips and trips'

•Railway-related problems including derailments, level crossing incidents, rail worker fatalities and platform accidents.

In 2000 Roy stepped down from the post of Managing Director to become a Consultant with the company. By this time the company had grown to work from 4 offices and employed some 20 consultants.

Location : Glasgow

Email : [email protected]

Telephone: +44 1355 228 103

Qualifications

MEng Aero-Mechanical Engineering, University of Strathclyde

PhD Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Strathclyde

Tom graduated with a MEng in Aero-Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde in 2013. This degree incorporated numerous independent and group assignments, as well as an international research project at the Universitat Politècnica de València in Spain.

Upon completion of his degree, Tom began work as a Supplier Quality Engineer with Jaguar Land Rover, located in Gaydon. This role included the review of suppliers’ manufacturing facilities to ensure correct process controls were in place to maintain part quality and protect the delivery schedule. One of his main projects involved the investigation of defective aluminium plates that were susceptible to splitting during the pressing process. The outcome of this investigation identified the primary cause of the failure and resulted in the implementation of new process controls to reduce the frequency of defective parts.

This role cultivated an interest in materials science which led to the undertaking of a PhD in Advanced Surface Engineering within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde.

The PhD project involved the development of an innovative surface engineering process to manufacture highly erosion-resistant composite surfaces containing ceramic and oxide reinforcing particles. The erosion performance of these surfaces was evaluated under a flowing slurry to replicate the proposed in-service operating conditions. The influence of corrosion, erosion and synergy was measured using appropriate electrochemical techniques while post-test analysis incorporated extensive microstructural examination using a variety of different assessment techniques.

The findings of this research were published in leading peer-reviewed academic journals and conference proceedings. Tom was awarded the Best Final Year PhD student prize by the Armourers and Brasiers Trust and has also successfully applied for grants from the IMechE.

Tom joined Hawkins in July 2017 and is an Associate based in our Glasgow office.
