April 16, 2017 · Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

Guide to the Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Glory of Easter Alfred McBride, O. Praem.

“Christ has risen from the dead By his death he has conquered death. To the dead he has given life,” Troparion

of Easter of the Byzantine liturgy; Catechism, 638.

Most people like a happy ending to a story. Sometimes, they even rewrite a work to achieve one. During the

eighteenth century, Shakespeare’s tragedy of King Lear was changed so that Lear was restored to the throne. But

Easter is more than a contrived ending. The risen Jesus wears the marks of the passion. The death and resurrection

of Jesus was more than the result of random historical forces—it was part of the eternal plan of salvation. Chris-

tians view the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus as the world’s greatest drama. The Gospel is not a tragedy, but

a narrative with a true happy ending, consistent with the life and death of Jesus. Easter illumines the suffering that

went before it.

Both Historical and Transcendent Event

John’s Gospel is so full of Easter joy that it contains two chapters about the event. Christ’s resurrection is a true

historical happening, a transcendent event, and a mystery. St. Paul speaks of the living tradition of the resurrection

that he discovered after his conversion on the Damascus road (1 Cor 15:3-4). Paul insists that the Twelve Apostles

and more than five hundred others witnessed the reality of the risen Jesus. Christ’s risen body is filled with the

power of the Spirit. It shares the divine life in its state of glory. The resurrection is historical, but it is also a tran-

scendent intervention of God in history. It is both a challenge to and a confirmation of our faith. “If Christ has not

been raised, then empty is our preaching, empty, too, your faith” (1 Cor 15:14).

Revealing the Glory of Christ’s Divinity

The resurrection makes credible everything Jesus did and taught. Easter opens up the glory of Christ’s divinity.

Christmas and Easter form one bond, revealing to us the accomplishment of the eternal plan of God for our salva-

tion. By His death, Jesus freed us from sin. By His resurrection, He opens for us the path to new life. Finally, the

risen Jesus is the principle and source of our own future resurrection. “As in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall

all be brought to life” (1 Cor 15:22). Easter helps us “taste the heavenly gift and the powers of the age to

come” (Heb 6:4-5). Every year, Easter faith takes on the bright sound of a trumpet blast. “Everything belongs to

you, whether it be the world, or life or death, or the present or the future. All belong to you, and you to Christ, and

Christ to God” (1 Cor 3:23-24).

Reflection

What is the history and mystery of Christ’s resurrection?

Our faith in the resurrection concerns a historical event witnessed by the Apostles who really met

the risen Lord. Our faith also views the resurrection as a transcendent mystery as the entry of the

humanity of Christ into the glory of God (Catechism, 656);.

What does the empty tomb tell us?

“The empty tomb and the linen cloths lying there signify that the body of Christ escaped the bonds

of death and corruption through God’s power. They prepare the disciples to meet the risen

Christ” (Catechism, 657).

What does Christ’s resurrection mean for us?

Christ, “the firstborn from the dead” (1 Cor 15:21), is the principle of our own resurrection, here

and now by the salvation of our own souls (Rom 6:4), and later by the resurrection of our own bod-

ies (cf. Rom 8:11; Catechism, 658).

Prayer O Christ of glory, I renew my faith in your resurrection from the dead. I praise you for the salva-

tion you have brought me. I believe in the future resurrection of my body.

Victimae Paschali Laudes

Christians, to the Paschal Victim

Offer your thankful praises!

A Lamb the sheep redeemeth:

Christ, who only is sinless,

Reconcileth sinners to the Father.

Death and life have contended in that

combat stupendous:

The Prince of life, who died, reigns immortal.

Speak, Mary, declaring,

What thou sawest, wayfaring.

“The tomb of Christ, who is living,

The glory of Jesus” resurrection;

Bright angels attesting,

The shroud and napkin resting.

Yes, Christ my hope is arisen;

To Galilee He goes before you.”

Christ indeed from death is risen,

our new life obtaining.

Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning!

Amen. Alleluia.

Regina Caeli (Queen of Heaven)

Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia.

For he whom you did merit to bear, alleluia.

Has arisen, as he said, alleluia.

Pray for us to God, alleluia.

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.

For the Lord is truly risen, alleluia.

Let us pray,

O God, who gave joy to the world through the

resurrection of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,

grant, we beseech you, that through the

intercession of the Virgin Mary, his Mother,

we may obtain the joys of everlasting life,

through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
