YOUTH FAITH FORMATION UPDATE
GROWING YOUNG DISCIPLES, PART II: CONFIRMATION
As you know, the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport has embarked on a journey to reimagine, re-build, and restructure our youth faith formation programs. After much prayer, research, and consultation with parents and catechetical leaders from across the country, we learned that the traditional way of teaching our children and grandchildren about Christ and His Church (the classroom model) is no longer an effective way of sharing the faith or forming young disciples. We also learned that a consensus is growing throughout the Cath-olic Church that we should focus our energies on sacramental preparation, family-friendly liturgies, lifelong faith formation, and creative ways of welcoming people of all ages and generations back into our parishes. Ear-lier this month, I shared with you that we have reimagined the way that we will prepare children for the Sacra-ments of First Penance & Reconciliation (Confession) and First Holy Communion. The details of our new pro-gram for second grade students and their families is now posted on our website: ccgronline.com/formation. It is now time to share our program of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
For too many teenagers, Confirmation has sadly become a kind of graduation from the Church, rather than the joyful beginning of life as an active adult disciple in the Church. We hope to end this tragic transition from en-thusiasm to ambivalence by transforming sacramental preparation into an engaging process for the whole fami-ly. First, we will continue to place primary focus on attending Mass. For more than a century, the Church has required every parish to provide some kind of religious education to children. During recent decades, we have asked parents to dedicate one hour each week to their child’s religious education by enrolling them in a faith formation program. Unfortunately, we failed to remind parents of their baptismal promise to be the first teach-ers of their children in all matters related to faith and morals; and that the most important component of that responsibility is attending Mass as a family. In our increasingly busy, stressful, and over-scheduled world, it has become common for parents to entrust their children to us for an hour of instruction each week but not join us for Mass each weekend. So, we will continue to ask parents to dedicate one hour each week to their child’s reli-gious education — by bringing them to church!
We will also no longer ask teenagers to spend countless hours in a classroom in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Beginning in the ninth grade, all high school students will be invited to participate in our two-year program of formation that will prepare them to receive the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation. During the first year, our students will participate in a series of interactive workshops about the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. These sessions will be scheduled on Sunday mornings to coincide with our weekend Mass schedule. During the second year, our students will participate in six additional workshops (and a four-hour mini-retreat) designed to help them grow in prayer, fellowship, and service; to prepare them to re-ceive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit; and to jumpstart their lives as faithful and faith-filled young adult disciples. Our complete schedule and a packet of necessary forms is posted on our website: ccgronline.com/formation.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gives his disciples the Great Commission and says to them: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).” Ever mindful of the Lord’s promise, let us renew our dedication to the Great Commission by celebrating the sacraments, by teaching our children and grandchildren, and by creating new generations of disciples that will pass on the beliefs and traditions of God’s Church until the end of the age. Change is never easy. I truly understand and appreciate that this new approach to youth faith formation may still be difficult for some to accept. In my heart, however, I am convinced that our mission is not to make “theologians” by teaching our children about just the doctrines and practices of the Church. Our mission must be to make, grow, and nurture “disciples” by engaging our children in new and creative ways, by teaching them to pray, and by helping them to build lifelong relationships with Jesus Christ, with God’s Church, and with their brothers and sisters in faith. Thank you in advance for your ongoing encouragement, prayers, and support for our youth faith formation programs at both Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Par-ish. Please continue to pray for me and our pastoral team, for our children and grandchildren, and for all who live, work, and worship in the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport!
Peace and blessings to all, Father Jim

OUR PASTOR’S MESSAGE ____________________
OUR LADY OF GOOD VOYAGE PARISH GRAND ANNUAL COLLECTION & FINANCIAL REPORT
Just over two years ago, Cardinal Seán O’Malley established the Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport as a col-laborative of two historic parishes: Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish. Although our parishes share one pastor and pastoral team, each parish remains fully and canonically independent; maintains its own back ac-counts and accounting procedures; and continues to be solely responsible for its own bills, building maintenance, and pastoral programs. During the past two years, Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish has been blessed in many ways. De-spite necessary changes to our worship schedule, attendance is good and growing (especially among young adults and young families at our 11:45am Sunday Mass). Fundraising events and the Annual Crowning Feast of the Holy Spirit re-main successful both by raising needed funds and by building and strengthening our parish as a vibrant community of prayer, fellowship, and service. And although it sometimes has been difficult, parishioners from both Holy Family Par-ish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish are now praying together, working together, and helping each other to live the Gospel, share God’s love, and rebuild the Church here in Gloucester and Rockport.
Despite these blessings, we face serious financial challenges at Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish. For the second straight year, we have been unable to balance our budget. These imbalances have been caused by those necessary changes to our worship schedule; increasing costs associated with building maintenance; and the loss of an anonymous benefactor whose generous donations over the course of many years contributed to the financial stability of the parish. During the past two years, we have worked diligently to significantly reduce our operating costs across the board: wages and bene-fits, office administration and equipment, and especially utilities without diminishing the pastoral ministries of our par-ish. Despite these efficiencies and more professional accounting procedures, we are unable to balance our annual budg-et. This means that we have been forced again and again to use funds from our savings account in order to make ends meet on a weekly basis. Inserted into this week’s newsletter is our Annual Financial Report for Fiscal Year 2016 which summarizes our actual income and expenses in various categories; and our budget for the coming fiscal year. This report is also posted on our website: ccgronline.com.
For these reasons, I am writing to ask all parishioners at Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish to help me raise $50,000 dur-ing this year’s Grand Annual Collection. This fundraising campaign is vitally important to our parish’s annual budget and our long-term financial stability. It helps us bridge the gap between our weekly offerings and our financial obliga-tions (such as salaries and benefits, insurance premiums, essential parish programs, routine building maintenance and repair, utilities, snow plowing, and stipends for our senior priests). Each year, we ask all parishioners to contribute whatever they can to our Grand Annual Collection. This year, it is especially important! Every contribution, whether it’s $10 or $100, helps us to achieve our goal of a balanced budget. Every penny raised goes directly to Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish. Anyone who tells you something else is simply not telling the truth!
In the coming week, every registered parish family will receive an offertory envelope for the Grand Annual Collection. Please place your offering in the collection basket at Mass during the weekend of September 10th and September 11th or mail it to me as soon as possible. Additional envelopes will be available at the doors of the church. As our Grand Annu-al Collection begins, please join me in praying that each of us, according to our means, will give generously to this all-important fundraising effort. Finally, please accept my deepest thanks for your prayers and encouragement during my second year as your pastor. Your kindness and support humble me and sustain me in my ministry. Please continue to pray for me, for our dedicated pastoral team, and for each other; and please know that you and your family are always in my prayers. Thank you in advance for your prayers and generous support of Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish!
Peace and blessings to all, Father Jim

GRADE 2 SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Registration Now Underway!
The Catholic Community of Gloucester & Rockport is now offering a creative and innovative way for young children to prepare for the Sacraments of Penance & Rec-onciliation (Confession) and First Holy Communion. Our program is designed to prepare both children and their parents for the sacraments, encourage lifelong relation-ships with Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church, and help families grow in prayer, fellowship, and service.
Our program is simple and family friendly! First, we will continue to place primary focus on inviting families to attend one of our seven weekend Masses. Second, all sec-ond grade children and their parents are asked to attend two 90 minute workshops during the fall season; and three 90 minute workshops during winter-spring sea-sons. Each “Faith & Family Workshop” is offered at three different times, so each family can choose which option works best for them!
Our program begins in October! Registration for all “Faith & Family Workshops” is now underway! All cal-endars and registration materials are now posted on our website: ccgronline.com/formation. If you have ques-tions or need assistance, please see Father Jim before or after Mass; or contact Betsy Works at 978-281-4820 or [email protected]. Please join us! All are welcome!

SUMMER CARILLON RECITALS An Our Lady of Good Voyage Tradition
Saturday, September 3rd at 5:00pm
An annual summer tradition concludes this week at Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish! Our final Summer Carillon Recital of the season is scheduled for this Saturday, Sep-tember 3rd at 5:00pm (rain or shine). Once again, LuAnn Pallazola, our own very talented organist-keyboardist has prepared programs that include familiar classical and international pieces, popular hymns, patriotic melodies, and even children’s tunes!
Installed in 1922, the carillon bells in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church were the first toned set of carillon bells in the United States. Although our bells can be heard from several blocks away, the sound is best near the church. The recital is free and open to the public! So, bring a cold drink or coffee! Bring a friend! Enjoy this wonderful sum-mer tradition! Don’t forget that Mass begins at 6:00pm! All are invited! All are welcome! For more information, please contact LuAnn Pallazola at [email protected] or 978-281-4820.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY ____________________
LIVING THE WORKS OF MERCY
WITH POPE FRANCIS
Pope Francis has said that mercy is the “fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sin-cerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life.” This Year of Mercy is an invitation for us to look sincerely into the eyes of those around us, to recognize their needs, and to act accordingly.
During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has called us to rediscover these Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy as a way of living more deeply as disciples of Christ Jesus in the true spirit of the Gospel. Each month, Pope Francis asks us to pray for both a “universal” prayer intention and an “evangelization” prayer intention.
Throughout the year, Pope Francis will also offer us “spiritual exercises” or ways of living out the Works of Mercy in communion with his monthly intentions, with fellow parishioners, and with believers throughout the world. The Holy Father’s monthly intentions & spiritual exercises will be printed in our bulletin and posted online at ccgronline.com/mercy.
September 2016 Universal Prayer Intention: Human Dignity We pray that that each of us may contribute
to the common good and to building a society that places the human person at the center.
Corporal Work of Mercy: Visit the Prisoner Learn more about and support pastoral ministries that care for those who are incarcerated and their families;
send a handwritten card or note to someone who is confined to a nursing home or care facility; or volunteer to serve the disabled or homebound.
September 2016 Evangelization Prayer: Mission to Evangelize
We pray that by participating in the Sacraments and meditating on the scriptures, all Catholics
may become more aware of our mission to evangelize.
Spiritual Work of Mercy: Instruct the Ignorant Meditate prayerfully on the Sunday Mass readings and share your prayer experience with someone;
or invite a friend, neighbor, or relative who is a so-called “lapsed Catholic”
to join you for Mass or a parish event or program.
As we celebrate the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy and live out the Works of Mercy under the Holy Father’s guidance, let us pray for the grace to live the Gospel, to share God’s love and mercy, and to build up the Church! May God bless you and your family with mercy!
