Our Pastorrsquos Message ____________________

OUR HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE ldquoWhoever Serves Me Must Follow Merdquo

In last weekendrsquos gospel reading Jesus says to some of his disciples ldquoWhoever serves me must follow me and where I am there also will my servant be (John 1226)rdquo This passage reminds me of a memorable dinner that I was blessed to share recently with some of our fellow parishioners All of them were born and raised on the island All are longtime parishioners at either Holy Family Parish or Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish And all of them have been close friends for many years During our dinner one parishioner a lifelong member of Holy Family Parish asked about our upcom-ing worship schedule for Holy Week I answered by reciting the schedule that appears in our bulletin (see next page) and on our website (at ccgronlinecom) Alas I noticed a raised eyebrow and a disappointed shaking of heads as I talked about our plans for the Mass of the Lordrsquos Supper on Holy Thursday and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday

So I explained that as the Catholic Community of Gloucester amp Rockport we will imitate the apostles on Holy Thursday and gather as one community of disciples at Saint Ann Church (the largest of our four churches) to celebrate together Christrsquos institution of both the ordained priesthood and the Holy Eucharist After Mass on Holy Thursday our commu-nity will process with the Blessed Sacrament from Saint Ann Church to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church Beginning on Holy Thursday Our Ladyrsquos Church will serve as the chapel of reposition for the Blessed Sacrament during the Holy Triduum and will remain open until midnight for silent personal prayer and veneration of Christrsquos real presence in the Holy Eucharist I also explained that on Holy Saturday our parishes will gather again as one community of faith for the Easter Vigil Once again we will imitate the disciples who gathered as one community of believers to celebrate the mira-cle of the Lordrsquos glorious resurrection

What happened next was a moment of pure grace One of our fellow parishioners spoke emotionally about the many changes that she has experienced over the years as a parishioner at Saint Ann Church She spoke about the merging of parishes the closing of schools the slow deterioration of parish buildings and even the scheduling of some recent pro-grams and special events at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church She told me that all of these changes have challenged her faith but that she remains both faith-filled and faithful to the church She remains confident that Christ will never abandon his people on this island She takes great comfort in Christrsquos abiding presence in the Eucharist in all of the churches in the Catholic Community of Gloucester amp Rockport And alluding to our procession from Saint Ann Church to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Holy Thursday she said that wherever Christ goes she will follow him even if that means following him beyond Saint Ann Church to Saint Joachim Church Saint Anthony Chapel or Our Lady of Good Voyage Church With tears in her eyes she said ldquoFather Jim wherever Jesus is I will be there no matter what I promise you thatrdquo Such powerful words Such an amazing grace I remain awestruck by our fellow parishionerrsquos deep and profound faith in Christ and his church

I know how she feels As many parishioners know I was raised at Saint Anthony Church in Cambridge I was baptized there received First Holy Communion there and made my Confirmation there As a college student I taught religious education classes there Two of my beloved grandparents were buried from there My sister was married there Sur-rounded by my family and friends I celebrated my first Mass there And for nearly five years I was truly blessed to serve as the parochial vicar at my familyrsquos home parish Few priests are lucky enough to serve the people of their home parishes in this way I dearly love my home parish And I will always miss it and its good and faithful people

But the Lord calls us to change grow and deepen our faith in unexpected ways He calls us to discipleship not just in a single church or parish but to the universal church which is the Body of Christ The Lord calls us to follow him in pray-er fellowship and service mdash wherever he leads us He challenges our comfort and complacency And just as we depend on him for consolation and guidance he depends on us to walk with him even when it hurts even when the cross seems too heavy During Lent the Lord calls us to sacrifice and surrender our lives to his endless love and mercy And during Holy Week he calls us to gather as one people to commemorate together his passion and death and ultimately to cele-brate together his resurrection

Once again in last weekendrsquos gospel reading Jesus says ldquoWhoever serves me must follow me and where I am there also will my servant be The Father will honor whoever serves me (John 1226)rdquo Let us pray for the courage and strength to follow him wherever he leads us Let us pray for the humility and perseverance to serve him in whatever way he asks us And let us pray that God will continue to bless and honor those who serve his church on this beautiful island and beyond

Peace and blessings to all Father Jim

This Weekrsquos Message ____________________

THE LAST PLACE

By Cliff Garveymiddot Minister of Evangelization

Since childhood I have been an avid (if not obsessive) reader My parents would walk into my bedroom on school mornings to wake me up but found me wide awake and reading with a flashlight As an adult with a deep interest in Catholic prayer and spirituality I am al-ways hoping to discover new books and ways of praying that might help me to truly become the person that God has called me to be

Recently I was blessed to discover several books by or about Blessed Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916) a priest and hermit who was martyred in Algeria during the First World War After a misspent youth Blessed Charles jour-neyed first to the Holy Land and then into the deserts of North Africa in search of his own ldquoNazarethrdquo where he could imitate the life of Jesus mdash carpenter laborer and teacher of Nazareth

Blessed Charles did not seek to imitate the public ministry of Jesus Instead he sought to imitate the hidden life of Jesus mdash a solitary life of hard work humility and pov-erty He sought to imitate the Jesus who took ldquothe last placerdquo in the world who descended from the right hand of God to toil as a day laborer in a small town

This weekend at Mass we read from Saint Paulrsquos Letter to the Philippians (26-11) in which we are reminded that Christ Jesus left heaven where he enjoyed equality with God to live and work among us as a tradesman and to humble himself suffer and die for us through the horrific indignity of crucifixion According to Blessed Charles Christ took the very ldquolast placerdquo among all of Godrsquos crea-tion He writes ldquoJesus had so taken the last place that no one else has ever been able to take it from himrdquo

This truly incredible act of humility inspired Charles de Foucauld to abandon a life of pleasure privilege and riches It inspired him to live a life dedicated to the simple gospel values of decency hard work and humility It in-spired him to cultivate and practice the virtue of spiritual poverty mdash the realization that everything we have is truly a gift from the God who loves each of us beyond measure

By seeking his own ldquolast placerdquo Blessed Charles did not seek to become a martyr like Christ (even though he did ultimately die as one) That would not have been true to the spirit of his vocation Rather he sought to lovingly surrender his life and will to God so that he might be-come the man who God called him to be and so that God might work through him for the salvation of souls

During this Holy Week and beyond let us pray for the courage and grace to follow Blessed Charles de Foucauld to our own personal ldquolast placerdquo where we might encoun-ter Christ Jesus through prayer fellowship and service to Godrsquos Church and to each other

A Prayer for Holy Week ____________________

By Blessed Charles de Foucauld

Father I abandon myself into your hands Do with me what you will

Whatever you may do I thank you I am ready for all I accept all

Let only your will be done in me and in all your creatures

I wish no more than this O Lord Into your hands I commend my soul

I offer it to you with all the love of my heart for I love you Lord and so need to give myself

to surrender myself into your hands without reservation and with boundless confidence

For you are my Father Amen

Blessed Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916) was born into French nobility and lived a reckless and worldly life until a conversion experience prompted him to seek ordination to the priesthood and to live a solitary life in French North Africa He is remembered as the founder of the Little Brothers of Jesus and other religious congregations

Blessed Charles de Foucauld was beatified by Pope Bene-dict XVI and is venerated as a martyr and as an example of humility and gospel living in the face of much hard-ship persecution and poverty Blessed Charles de Fou-cauld pray for us
