We celebrate the 2nd SUNDAY OF EASTER (DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY). It is the festival of mercy. We shall have our usual Divine Mercy Devotions

(with Holy Hour and singing of the Divine Mercy Chaplet) this Sunday from 1:30PM. When the Apostles received the news of Christ’s resurrection, they felt very uneasy because they had sinned by deserting Jesus at the time of His Passion and Cross. But, Christ appeared to them and reassured them: “Peace be with you!” (John 20:19f). Amazingly, He not only forgave but also granted them the power to forgive sins (cf. John 20:23). Through this singular gesture, He instituted the Sacrament of Mercy and

Reconciliation in His Church (cf. 2Cor 5:17-19). This is the foundation of Divine Mercy Sunday. Hence, led by the Holy Spirit, St. Pope John Paul II, instituted Mercy Sunday on the Octave of Easter, in the Year 2000, on the occasion of the canonization of a Polish nun, Faustina Kowalska (who received revelation and messages of divine mercy from the Lord Jesus in 1937). Some words of our Lord to her, as recorded in her diary are: “I want the image solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it” (Diary 341); “This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of my tender mercies. Every soul believing and trusting in My mercy will obtain it” (Diary 420). Scripture proclaims and celebrates God as God of Mercy and Love: “But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ…. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God” (Eph 2:4-5, 8). BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you…. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:21-23). VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DINNER – On 05/04/2019 at 5:30PM Desde el Escritorio del Pastor Celebramos el 2do DOMINGO DE PASCUA (DOMINGO DE LA DIVINA MISERICORDIA). Es la fiesta de la misericordia. Tendremos nuestras devociones habituales de la Divina Misericordia (con la Hora Santa y el canto de la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia) este domingo a las 1:30 PM. Cuando los apóstoles recibieron la noticia de la resurrección de Cristo, se sintieron muy incómodos porque habían pecado, abandonando a Jesús en el momento de Su Pasión y Cruz. Pero, Cristo se les apareció y les aseguró: "¡Paz a ustedes!" (Juan 20:19f). Sorprendentemente, Él no solo les perdonó sino que también les concedió el poder de perdonar los pecados (cf. Juan 20:23). A través de este gesto singular, instituyó el Sacramento de la Misericordia y la Reconciliación en Su Iglesia (cf. 2Cor 5:17-19). Esta es la base del Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. Reflection on the Sunday Readings By Fr. Eamon Tobin During the Easter Season, the first reading is from the Acts of the

Apostles authored by Luke. Acts, among other things, relates for us the development of the early church. This week’s reading tells how the working of signs and wonders led to great numbers joining the Church. During the C cycle of the Easter season, our second reading is from the Book of Revelation. Our Gospel this week recounts two post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus to his disciples. The Second Sunday of Easter is also called Divine Mercy Sunday, a reference to the Divine Mercy devotion made popular by St. Faustina Kowalska, which celebrates the wonderful mercy of God for the whole world.

SEEING IS BELIEVING Seeing is believing! Since cellphone screens connect us instantly to social media, live TV, and loved ones’ fac-es near and far, “Doubting Thomas” could be our patron saint: “Unless I see, I will not believe!” But how comfort-ing for any of us who share Thomas’s doubt, or love “doubters” who do, to see how kindly Jesus responds. By offering the very evidence that Thomas demanded, Jesus doesn’t scold Thomas, but seems to understand such skepticism. Could Jesus have been thinking of us, who long to believe that “Jesus is risen!” but see so much suf-fering, and perhaps even cause some, that we wonder, how could something so wonderful be true? In today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the risen Jesus’ healing love comforts through disciples who love others. In Revelation, “our brother John” doesn’t just claim he saw Jesus alive, but passes on Jesus’ life-giving words, “Do not be afraid.” Seeing Jesus in others is believing! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

VER ES CREER ¡Ver es creer! Desde que los teléfonos celulares nos conectan instantáneamente a las redes sociales, televisión en vivo y los rostros de nuestros seres queridos de cerca y lejos, “Tomás el incrédulo” podría ser nuestro santo pa-trón: “¡hasta que no lo vea, no lo creeré!” Pero que re-confortante para cualquiera de nosotros que compartimos las dudas de Tomás, o nos gustan los “incrédulos” que lo hacen, para ver qué tan amable responde Jesús. Al ofrecer la misma evidencia que Tomás pedía, Jesús no reprendió a Tomás, sino parece que entendió su incredulidad. ¿Es que acaso Jesús estaba pensando en nosotros, que anhelá-bamos creer que “¡Jesús resucitó!”, pero ver demasiado sufrimiento y quizá incluso haber causado algo, que nos preguntamos, cómo algo tan extraordinario sería verdad? En las lecturas de hoy del libro de los Hechos de los Após-toles, el amor de Jesús resucitado da consuelo por medio de sus discípulos que amaban a los demás. En el libro del Apocalipsis, “nuestro hermano Juan” no solo afirma que vio vivo a Jesús, sino que transmite las palabras de Jesús que dan vida: “¡No tengan miedo!” ¡Ver a Jesús en los demás es creer!
