LA PROMESA DEL PARAÍSO Los ciudadanos estadounidenses escogen y eligen a sus líderes para ocupar los puestos políticos. Es el pueblo quien confiere la autoridad a unos pocos y nadie se mantiene en el poder permanentemente. El reino de Dios es completamente diferente. Cristo es nuestro Rey, pero se hizo humano para que nosotros pudiéramos tener la experiencia del reino de Dios. Jesús tenía el poder de perdonar a los pecadores, anara los enfermos y aun resucitar a los muertos, pero sin la parafernalia o símbolos del éxito y del poder. Todos estamos libres de acep-tar a Jesucristo o de rechazarlo como hizo Judas. Cuando Jesús estaba en la cruz los espectadores se burlaban de ese “rey” sin poder para “salvarse a sí mismo”. Uno de los criminales crucifi-cados con Jesús quería salir pronto de su agonía; el otro re-conoció la inocencia de Jesús y también su reino futuro. PROMISE OF PARADISE As American citizens we choose and elect leaders from among ourselves to political office. Authority is vested in the few by the many, and yet no one has a permanent hold on power. The reign of God is entirely different. As our King, Christ has rule over us. He became human so that we could experience God’s reign: Jesus had the power to for-give sinners, heal the sick, and even raise the dead, but without the trappings of power. All are free to accept Jesus Christ, or to turn away as Judas did. As Jesus hung on the cross, onlookers jeered at this “king” with no power to “save himself.” One of the criminals crucified with him wanted only quick release from his agony; the other acknowledged the power of Jesus’ innocence and his future rule. Reflections ~ Reflexiones: Gospel: Luke 23:35-43 As we celebrate the last Sunday of the Church year, Luke's Gospel leaves us with a "holy picture" to remem-ber and cherish. It is a crucifixion scene. Above the head of Jesus, a sign proclaims: "This is the king of the Jews." The soldiers and most of the crowd think that the sign is a bad joke. But a criminal who is hanging in a cross next to Jesus senses the truth about him. "Remember me when you enter upon your reign," he prays. And the King responds, "This day you will be with me in paradise. 1.) "Greater love than this no one has, that he give up his life for his friend." We might say, "Greater love than this no king has, that he give up his life for his people." This is the kind of king Jesus was and is. Now he is a Risen King, and we rise with him each day, every time we respond to grace in our lives, every time we imitate our king by overcoming evil with good. What can you do this week to be like Christ the King in love, in forgiveness, in gener-osity, in works of peace and justice?

Evangelo: Luke 23: 35-43 Al celebrar el último domingo del año de la Iglesia, el Evan-gelio de Lucas nos deja con un "cuadro sagrado" para recor-dar y apreciar. Es una escena de crucifixión. Sobre la cabeza de Jesús, un signo proclama: "Este es el rey de los judíos". Los soldados y la mayoría de la multitud piensan que la señal es un chiste malo. Pero un criminal que está colgado en una cruz junto a Jesús siente la verdad sobre él. "Acuérdate de mí cuando entres en tu reino", dijó. Y el Rey responde: "Este día estarás conmigo en el paraíso". 1.) "Mayor amor que este que nadie tiene, que renuncie a su vida por su amigo". Christmas Gifts: With unemployment and low-paying jobs increasing, many families may not be able to afford Christmas gifts for their children this year. If you need help with presents for your children, please phone the Parish office and leave your name, phone number, ad-dress; the names, ages, genders, and sizes of your children, and any sugges-tions for toys, books, or games before November 22nd. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society will deliver the gifts from the Giving Tree before Christmas. Pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Cathedral: Thousands of pilgrims will walk and pray, asking the intercession of Our Lady of the Americas, the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. The walk begins at All Souls Church in South San Francisco at 6:00 am and arrives at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco at 2:00 pm for Mass celebrated by Archbishop Cordileone. The walk features singers, dancers, and decorated floats. A choir of members from several parish choirs will sing at Mass. Transportation to the departure point in South San Francisco (from St. Mary’s Cathedral) is available beginning at 4:00 am; transportation from the end point at St. Mary’s Cathe-dral back to the departure point is available from 2:30 – 5:00 pm. Archdiocesan Annual Appeal: Thank you to all who have returned their Archdiocesan Annual Appeal pledges and donations. As of now, we have received $53,931.27 of our assigned goal, which is $ 95,135.00. If you have not received a brochure, please pick one up in the Parish of-fice TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Among the Catholics seeking reli-gious freedom in America were the Car-rolls of Maryland, who arrived in 1649 from Ireland via England. Charles Carroll, born in Annapolis in 1737, was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of In-dependence, and was the longest-surviving signer. As was the custom for English Catholics, he attended English schools in Belgium and later university in France. By the time he signed the Decla-ration, he was the richest man in Amer-ica, and his decision to sign would hardly go unnoticed by the king. Because Carroll was so wealthy and because he was a Catholic, he had more to lose than the others. Those who signed became traitors to the Crown and risked losing everything. It is said that someone grumbled that there were many men in the world named Charles Carroll, and he could dodge responsibility if he had to. For that reason, he added a flair to his signature, “of Carrollton,” making it clear that he put everything at risk. His cousin John, also an ardent sup-porter of the American Revolution, was ordained a Jesuit priest and returned to Maryland at the outbreak of hostilities. Upheavals in Europe forced the Jesuit order to dissolve, leaving Carroll a secular priest. Ultimately, it was John Carroll who was asked to organize the Catholic Church in the new nation. No one was better positioned for this task, a cultured man from an esteemed family, a cher-ished friend of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, and a man so thor-oughly attuned to an undercurrent of anti-Catholicism in the colonies that he could charm powerful people to a new point of view. —Rev. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE: En la frontera entre México y El Paso en Texas en los Estados Unidos hay una grandísima imagen de Cristo Rey con sus brazos extendidos en bienvenida y sobre una cruz. En el continente Americano encontramos imágenes de Cristo en las montañas como Cristo Redentor en Brasil, o Cristo de los Andes, entre Chile y Ar-gentina, o el Cristo Rey en Colombia; todos observando calladamente pesa-res y progresos de sus pueblos y na-ciones. En toda Latinoamérica se grita esperanzadamente “Viva Cristo Rey”. La Iglesia universal honra a Cristo con el título de Rey solo desde 1925, pero siempre tuvo la certeza que el pobre Jesús de Nazaret es nuestro Maestro y Señor y, contra él no pue-den las fuerzas del mal ni la injusticia. Terminando el Año Litúrgico, es justo y necesario recordar y festejar que Jesús reina para siempre. En Latinoamérica y en todas par-tes donde la injusticia parece domi-nar, Cristo Rey es continuo recuerdo de la promesa divina; de la esperanza de un mundo mejor no allá en el cielo sino aquí en la tierra renovada. As Thanksgiving approaches, I always like to take time to reflect on my life and count my blessings that the dear Lord has bestowed upon me this year. When I think about what I am

most thankful for, my family and friends always stand out most in my mind.

It has been a great fortune to have each of you in my life. The kindness and generosity you have shown me is more than one person could ever hope for. Even as the cold of winter ap-proaches, I know my holidays will be warmed by your thoughtfulness and friendship. My

Thanksgiving wish is that each of you will know how appreciated you are.

I pray that you and your families will all have a warm, healthy, safe and wonderful Thanks-giving holiday!
