AFRICAN AMERICANS AND THE VOTE

Every February Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and City Commissioners’ host a Black History Month Reception to highlight the lasting contributions and positive influence of Black Americans in the Central Florida community. This year’s theme, “2020- African Americans and The Vote” explores the ongoing struggle on the part of both black men and black women for the right to vote and their sacrifices for Civil Rights.

The month of February is known nationally as Black History Month and is dedicated to honoring the achievements of Black Americans and their lasting impact on the nation’s history. This event continues to support the city’s commitment to inclusion, respect and diversity. The City of Orlando advocates for human rights and dignity for all.

The 2020 Black History Month Reception will feature the presentation of the city proclamation, food, refreshments, art, a youth art competition, and entertainment. A youth component is typically included in the celebration as a means of engaging the next generation and their families in upholding tradition while also inspiring advancement.
