PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends,

I hope all our mothers enjoyed a lovely day with their families last Sunday. Mothers’ Day is a special time to not only thank our mothers for all the love and support they provide us, but also to remember those special mothers who are no longer with us. Thank you to our group of very special mothers who ran a fabulous stall last Friday to help the students select a special gift at the Mothers’ Day ‘Shop’. Your help was very much appreciated.

Year 6 CampLast week our Year 6 students and staff travelled to our nation’s capital to learn more about democracy as part of their Year 6 Canberra excursion. They were extremely fortunate to visit Parliament House on a very active day and received a special welcome from our local federal minister, the Hon. Jason Falinski.

I would like to thank our hard working Year 6 staff, Mr Jono Rosconi, Mrs Laila Connery, Mrs Rebecca New and Mrs Kristy McNab for devoting time away from their own families to accompany our students in their first important steps towards independence, creating lifelong memories along the way.

Online Safety Support Tool for ParentsThe Office of the eSafety Commissioner have introduced a new interactive online tool for parents and carers. This tool has plenty of tips and practical steps along the way so you can help your child explore safely and manage online issues should they arise regarding: social media, screen time, personal information, inappropriate content, cyberbullying and contact with strangers. If you are interested and would like to visit the tool to learn more, please click on the link below:

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

NAPLANYear 3 and 5 completed their NAPLAN assessments this week, with reports due to parents in August. NAPLAN assessments provide a point in time snapshot of student performance in comparison to national levels in literacy and numeracy and form part of our overall assessment practices to measure student growth. I would like to thank our Year 3 and 5 staff for preparing our students for this process in a calm and supportive manner.

PCS Bus – It’s a Wrap! The Peninsula Community of Schools, or PCS, has been operating for over 10 years and involves 10 primary schools and 3 high schools. Our combined staff work in collaboration, rather than competition, to deliver the best possible education to all students attending public schools in our local area. To promote our community of schools, Forest Coach Lines have designed a bus wrap to get our brand out there in our local

community. Here is what Forest Coach Lines had to say about the new bus:“Forest Coach Lines is excited to be working closely with local public schools and supporting them in achieving a branded bus that encompasses what the Peninsula Community of Schools stands for. We look forward to the continued

strengthening of the excellent relationship going forward.”

Look out for the PCS bus as you travel around the peninsula – it looks terrific! Please see some photos of the bus above, including a shot with all the primary principals.

Our Year 6 student leaders also visited Narrabeen Sports HS in Week 1 for a combined student leaders photo with the other PCS schools. It is wonderful to see our local student leaders all wearing their school uniforms with such pride.

Instructional Leadership trainingThis week our executive team commenced an instructional leadership course with specialist Jann Farmer-Hailey as part of our strategic direction – Growing in Leadership. This course involves analysing stu-dent performance data to determine the impact of our teaching practices and leading grade teams to improve student learning outcomes. Our goal of every student achieving a year’s worth of learning for a year’s worth of schooling is well supported by this initiative.

We also had the pleasure of meeting our new Director, Educational Leadership last week, Andrew Stevenson. Andrew replaces Jason Baldwin who has taken up an appointment on the Central Coast and we warmly welcome him to the Elanora Heights community. Andrew will be working closely with our staff to support us in our educational goals.

Until next time, Leesa Martin Principal

MAKE YOUR OWN LUNCH - YEARS 3 - 6Wednesday May 30 and Thursday May 31

Thank you SO much to those parents who have volunteered to help with Make My Own Lunch. All students participate in the first part at school and the cost has been included in your school fees. We hope you will encourage your child to also participate in the second part – the follow-up challenge at home. Years 5 and 6 and 3H will participate on Wed May 30 and the rest of Year 3 plus Year 4 on Thursday May 31.

They will not need to bring lunch on the day their class participates.

A note will be sent home on Monday to ask if any children have restricted dietary requirements and whether your child will participate in the home challenge.

At school: Nutrition Lesson and Make My Own Lunch BuffetAll students in Years 3-6 participate in a nutrition lesson followed by preparing their own lunch. Different content will be presented in the lessons for Years 3 / 4 and Years 5 / 6. Years 3-5 will make their own wrap from the wonderful array of appetising fresh, nutritious foods prepared by parents. Year 6 will make a salad in a jar, learning how to prepare salads ahead and layer them to keep them fresh. They will also make a healthy snack.

At home: Follow-up Make My Own Lunch ChallengeStudents who undertake the follow-up challenge make their own lunch and morning tea for as many days as possible in the next fortnight, recording their efforts on an attractive card. Mini-merits and healthy treats are given, but the real rewards are in developing personal responsibility and healthy eating habits. This is an ideal opportunity for home and school to work together to develop these lifelong assets. Please encourage them to participate.

SCHOOL WINTER UNIFORMThe new winter uniform is here – the boys and girls long sleeve shirt with logo and the girls winter culottes. Don’t they look great! Most Kindy students will be wearing the new shirt which comes in their winter uniform pack and the

culottes are a popular choice, particularly with the Primary girls.

The old long-sleeved polo, blouse and skivvy can still be worn. These are being sold at $10 each at the Uniform Shop, however sizes are limited.

A list of all current uniform items are on the P&C / Uniform webpage, as well as order forms and price lists for the Uniform Shop and 2nd Hand uniforms.

DONATED BOOKSOver the last few months our Library has done a stocktake and culled some books. These books were then donated to Paul O’Keefe (DY RSL pastor) who travelled to Ghana taking the books with him to donate to students in their schools and communities.

It is so lovely to know and see these books bringing new joy to children elsewhere in the world.

. The P&C had a fantastic turnout last Wednesday. The mood in the room was extremely positive and enthusiastic and I think everyone left with a sense that we are moving forward in a number of areas to enhance our children’s educational experience.

Each of the sub committees are running very efficiently and if nothing else the meetings are a chance to come together to give the broader community an opportunity to hear in summary what’s topical. If you have a particular interest or questions send an email, we can direct this to the relevant sub-committee member for discussion.

Car Raffle last term was very successful with great individual and class efforts. The winners are:

Mini iPads Principal for a day Movie Money1st - Harry B - 1D 2nd - Ewan M - 2SB 3rd - Zara B - 1R1st - Rhys S - 6C 3rd - Evan D- 6N

We ended up with two 3rd place winners both selling 120 tickets, thought it was only fair to split the movie money between them. 4W win all tickets returned and 6N win for most tickets sold.

Thank you to all our Mothers’ Day stall helpers and wrappers. It was absolutely priceless seeing the joy and concentration on the children’s faces as they went ‘shopping’ for their special ladies. Even the smallest amount of parental assistance is helping make a big difference to our fund raising. We raised over $2000 from the Mothers’ Day Stall.

NEW PLAYGROUNDOur plan to improve the junior and senior playgrounds is now under way, with the first ropes equipment installed.

The next stage, creating a natural playground is being worked on so expect more on that in weeks to come. A Playground Sub-Committee meeting is planned for the May 30 to work on details for the top oval and natural playground on the bottom oval. Please email [email protected] to express your interest in discussing how best to spend what you have raised.

We are holding our Term 2 working bee next month on Saturday June 16.

Parents may not know that our grounds maintenance allocation is the same as any other school. The size and demands of our location are not taken into account so Andy needs a hand.

The P&C plans to do one working bee each term as more than likely one will be rained out. Even if you can only make one in the year we can share it around. Make this term’s your one to attend.

...WORKING BEEThe working bee runs from 1pm to 4pm. Children are welcome and each will receive a mini merit for their efforts. We are so lucky our school has such a beautiful bush setting but this does mean a lot of maintenance is involved. So please come and have a fun afternoon with other members of our school community. For your diary, save the date and organise a sleepover or babysitter for August 11 for the School P&C Trivia Night. This is the one major event this year so there won’t be the two discos and other smaller fundraising events dotted throughout the year.

Think about a table for the ‘usuals’ or maybe use it as a chance to catch up with some of those parents of children from a few years ago! We often find it hard to get everyone together with our busy schedules so we’re making it easy for you! Watch out for more to follow on this great event.

MUSIC NEWSOn Monday in Week 2, 13 recorder students attended their first combined rehearsal for their Opera House debut at Sydney Congress Hall in the city.

Our students were some of the 300 or so metropolitan recorder players who will be coming together this Sunday to perform at the Sydney Opera House for the 2018 Festival of Instrumental Music concerts. They will be joined by another 200 students from country areas.

Our students will be required for another rehearsal prior to the concert on Sunday at 12noon. The concert begins at 7pm and I know it will be a very exciting time for both, performers and parents.

On Tuesday May 29 our Year 3 choir will be attending their first combined rehearsal for the PCS Music Festival. The rehearsal will take place at Wheeler Heights Public school and students will be taking a bus to and from the venue. A permission note has been sent home this week.

The PCS Music festival is taking place on August 6 at Pittwater High School. The 1-2 dance group, the recorder ensemble and Year 6 singers will be joining with Narrabeen Lakes and Narrabeen North Public Schools and the Pittwater High string group to perform and the clarinet ensemble will also be performing on that evening. It is a night not to be missed.

3-6 choir continues to work on their repertoire for their upcoming performance in the Festival of Choral Music at the Sydney Opera House. Their first combined rehearsal will be on Tuesday June 26.

All groups are continuing to work on pieces for the Elanora Extravaganza, which we are all looking forward to again this year.

We are still looking for new volunteers and especially need people who are available to help on either Thursdays or Fridays. These are the busiest days in the canteen and extra hands are always needed. Please call the canteen if you are able to help.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SENIOR BAND

Last term our Senior Band successfully auditioned for the opportunity to perform in one of the Arts Unit’s Music Festival Concert Series held at the Town Hall and Opera House throughout Terms 2 & 3.

There were approximately 300 bands from across NSW Public Schools that auditioned for this opportunity and only 50 were selected and given a spot in one of the 12 concerts.

This is the first time EHPS has had a band involved in these performances and we are very proud of this wonderful achievement.

They will be performing in the “Coorong Concert” at Sydney Town Hall on Tuesday Sept 18.

A big thank you once again to Mike Fronzek who recorded the band and edited the video for us.
