Happy New Year to All ofOur Residentsand Families
“Time is an equal opportunityemployer. Each human being hasexactly the same number of hoursand minutes in every day. Richpeople can’t buy more hours.Scientists can’t invent new minutes. And you can’t save time to spend iton another day. Even so, time isamazingly fair and forgiving. Nomatter how much time you’ve wastedin the past, you still have an entiretomorrow. - Denis Waitely
Wow! Another year has cometo an end! I hope that everyonehad a wonderful holiday and newyear celebration and that everyoneis ready for the promise of theupcoming year.
Our big news in December wasthe launch of our BelmontBoutique. This project was theinspiration of Caily Hoban, ouractivity coordinator andAleksandra Staszalek, our memoryprogram coordinator. The projectbegan last January with the idea tocreate craft projects created by theresidents to sell to benefit theAlzheimer’s association. As theyear progressed, the vision keptgrowing, and more projects wereadded. By the opening of theboutique, our residents had puttogether 1,400 items to sell -presented in a beautiful,
professional display.Caily, Aleksandra and our
residents did an outstanding jobwith this event. The opening ofthe boutique was very wellattended by residents, family andvisitors from the community. There was a great holiday feelingfrom everyone with many positivecomments. At the time of thiswriting, we anticipate salesexceeding $3,500. This was a greatholiday celebration, and we willbe ready to begin work for nextyear’s boutique. All ideas forprojects and help with projects arewelcome!
On behalf of our staff, I wouldlike to thank all of you whocontributed to our holiday fund. AVISA gift card was presented to100 nonmanagement employeesin time for Christmas. Your giftand generosity are greatlyappreciated.
Each year seems to pass evermore swiftly. The new year is atime for reflection, resolution anda fresh start on a brand new year.On behalf of our Belmont family, may 2015 be a year of health, happiness and peace for everyone.

Welcoming in 2015As we prepare for a new year of
things to come, let us not forgetthe lessons learned from therecent months. One case andpoint would be the infectioncontrol issues surrounding theEbola virus cases that erupted inthe United States.
This New Year should be one ofreflection on the things we havelearned, and on projection andpreparation in order to do thingsbetter.
Surviving the holiday’s throngof treats and tasteful dishes, aswell as festive gatherings, we mustbe ever vigilant in assuring weprotect those we love and care forfrom the ever existing bugs andmicroscopic undesirables that lurkamong us.
Despite the cold weatherthroughout the country, issuessuch as the norovirus continue tosurvive. According to the Centersfor Disease Control andPrevention (CDC) over onemillion people reside in assistedliving communities, and reportsbetween one and three millionserious infections occur every yearin these settings. We all know theusual culprits which includeurinary tract infections, diarrhealdiseases, C-difficile, and theominous norovirus. Communitiescan do many things to keep theseinfections at bay with hopes ofaverting an epidemic and thethreat of quarantine.
Outbreaks, such as theNorovirus require an accurateassessment of the situation, aswell as consistent and thoroughsurveillance of those residentsidentified with symptoms. It isalso necessary to implementmeasures to contain and controlthe spread.
The CDC and local healthdepartments recommend residentsexhibiting symptoms be asked toreceive their meals in theirapartments in an effort to limitthe number of residents contactedthus containing the number ofresidents infected. While nursingconducts surveillance on thoseidentified with Norovirussymptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes elevatedbody temperatures, housekeepingworks in concert with nursing tokeep the environment safeand clean.
It is especially beneficial forhousekeeping to increase theirefforts to sanitize the communityby intensifying their cleaning ofcommon areas. Areas such aselevators, handrails, public diningand restrooms are high trafficareas that require frequentcleaning throughout the day toprevent the virus from attachingitself to another unknowingvictim.
Dietary’s continued support inthe cause of prevention would beto assure dishwashers contain themanufacturer’s
recommend level ofsanitizing solution and areoperating at the recommendedtemperature to kill any germsor bacteria.
Most importantly, the mainpractice we all can be sure isconsistent and never failing isgood hand washing. Remindyour staff and residents of theimportance of consistent andcorrect hand washing instopping the spread of infection.Additionally, remind staff to stayhome 48 hours after symptomsof the Norovirus have resolved.
The CDC reports upward of380,000 people die each year asa result of infections contractedin communities like assistedliving facilities. Let’s do our partin working toward loweringthose numbers by followinggood infection control practices.
For more information, referto the CDC website (cdc.gov) orcontact your local healthdepartment for guidance incontrolling the number ofinfections in your community. This is your first step toward agreat and HAPPY NEW YEAR.Juanita Stemen, MSN
